Mini Stocks Added To Friday Ocala Schedule

By BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL- After days of torrential rain left Ocala Speedway a muddy mess and washed out the first night of points racing in 2011, it will be try, try again this Friday, April 8th.  Included on the schedule will be the Late Models, the Hobby Stocks, The Amsoil Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.  This will be the last Friday of regular racing before the Monster Trucks invade Ocala Speedway the following week.

Thanks to the interference of Mother Nature, Ocala Speedway’s Late Models have seen virtually no action this season except for a few determined racers that participated in some special events.  Of those drivers, Christian Augspurger is the only regular Ocala weekly Late Model racer who has been racing at the track, as Tyler Ivey and Ivedent Lloyd do not compete in the regular season points race on a weekly basis.  But defending Late Model Champion Mark Whitener got in some fast practice laps over a month ago, and he will be the odds on favorite to win come Friday night. New Winners in 2011 East Bay Features

April 2, 2011 – With the second month of the 2011 season underway, it was a host of new names in victory lane at East Bay Raceway Park.

First to get a feature win was Jimmy Odell, whose Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bomber feature was his first career main victory. Odell swapped the lead with Roberto Morfin Sr. as the two were the only ones at the head of the field. Odell led the first five laps before yielding to Morfin. Last week’s feature winner kept the top position before Odell bounced back in front. Morfin fell out of the race shortly after that, leaving Odell with new challengers. No one was able to mount a serious threat through the remaining five laps. Darrell Taylor came from his 11th starting spot to gain second with Thomas Burnside using a late race charge from fifth to third. Dalton Epps claimed fourth with Don Quinn rounding out the top five. Michael Lacey won the B main. Morfin Sr., Quinn and Richard Humfeld claimed heats.

2010 Street Stock champion Donnie Reed was able to break through and gain his first win of the young season. Reed led wire to wire, immune from the troubles that confounded his challengers. Early runnerup Jeff Rodgers fell out of contention with a flat right rear tire on the 11th lap. Just before that happened, three drivers in the top five were wiped out when Billy Carlbert, Jarod Gay and Locke Brown were collected in a frontstretch incident on a restart. Andy Lee moved to second on lap 12, despite having to come from the tail due to an early lap spin. Trailing Reed and Lee were Buck Woodhouse, who pitted with a flat tire on lap 9, Curtis Book and Roy Woodhouse. Reed and Buck Woodhouse started the night as heat winners.

The Late Model feature took an interesting twist from the beginning. Polesitter and point leader Bryan Bernhardt took a challenge to move from his pole starting spot to the rear of the 22-car field. Bernhardt, who has been the only winner in the class, slotted in 18th as a few other drivers chose to fall deeper in the pack. At the start, Ryan Mitchell took off and left everyone else to pursue. Bernhardt found himself in a three-car tangle on the first lap, pushing him deeper in the field. At the front, Mitchell was holding his own while Steve Mathis and Dave Schmauss started trading second. Mathis would exit the track on lap 6 with smoke trailing from the car. Behind Schmauss, Roger Crouse and Philip Cobb were battling with Cobb slipping past and challenging Schmauss. Cobb grabbed second on lap 9, but lost it a lap later to Schmauss. Crouse and Travis Varnadore began exchanging fourth place with one in position, then the other. With fewer than five laps remaining, Schmauss found a line and scooted past Mitchell to claim the victory. “That was a lot of fun. I hope y’all enjoyed it. I sure did,” said the happy winner in Victory Lane. Mitchell kept second, ahead of Cobb, Crouse and Varnadore. Heats were taken by Schmauss, Crouse and Varnadore.

The East Bay Sprints were able to run their first event of the season, losing their scheduled start on March 5 to weather. The lidlifter was not without drama as unofficial winner Danny Martin Jr. found his car protested by Greg Leonard. Post-race inspection found Martin’s winning ride to be within the rules and the victory stood. Martin grabbed the lead on the fourth lap. Jimmy Ballew led the first two, then drifted off the track with a broken oil pump. It gave the lead to Billy Boyd Jr. who kept it until Martin swept by. Boyd had to deal with a hard-charging Greg Leonard and lost second only to gain it back. Boyd crossed the finish in second with Leonard, Kurt Taylor and Johnny Gilbertson finishing out the top five. Ballew and Boyd took heat wins.

Russ Bolle took top honors in Dirt Daubers.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, April 9, 2011. The program will include Late Models, Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modifieds, Street Stocks, motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers and Outlaw 4s. For more information, go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

Josh Williams wins Pro Truck Feature at Punta Gorda Speedway

It was a great night for racing as the sun went down and the weather was cool, the racing action was ready to heat up the night.

T.Q. Midgets were up first with the 30 car of Mike Belusar out of Punta Gorda taking the lead on lap 8 and finishing the race as the leader with hard charging Jamie Barnum second and Jack
Duffy third.

Rookie Trucks took to the field for their fifteen lap feature event which took some time to get in as most of the drivers are young kids racing for the first time. Kelli Burns of Port Charlotte led the first half of the race but the many cautions from the young drivers had the 39 of Michael
Atwell charge to the lead on a restart to take over the lead. Michael Atwell would go on to win the feature race and celebrate with his family and truck sponsor “Bubba The Love Sponge” in the winners circle with Joseph Mursuli second and Cody Martell third.

Pro 4 class once again drove a caution free race with battles going on all throughout the field. Phillip Ellis of North Port jumped out to the lead till Ryan Colver got past him on lap eight. Phillip tried for the next seventeen laps to take back the lead with no luck and no cautions he would have to settle for that second spot for the second week in a row while Dylan Bigley of Naples would come in third.

Bandoleros came out for their fifteen lap feature, which are another class of young drivers, some of them coming up from Go-Karts and Quarter Midgets. Trevor Taylor out of Zellwood would take an early lead and raced all fifteen laps trying to hold off hard charging Tyler Clem to the finish line while Johnny Holmes of Port Charlotte came in third. There was some celebration going on in the winners circle as Trevor and the son of Bubba The Love Sponge Tyler Clem pulled their cars up into the winners circle as pictures were taken and thank yous were made to their sponsor Bubba the Love Sponge.

Legend Cars put on a great show as the two number fourteens battled for the lead with the fourteen B of Jordan Black of Orlando winning and the fourteen of Brady Marshall of Sarasota second and Mitch Verhaagh of Bonita third.

Pro Trucks also ran a caution free race with Josh Williams of Port Charlotte took over the lead from Steve Darvalics on lap three and never looked back. Darvalics gave it everything he had but it just wasn’t enough to catch Williams and would have to settle for second while Michael Burns of Port Charlotte came in with a strong third place finish. Williams treated the fans to burn outs on the front stretch before his interviews and smoked them up again leaving the track as the fans cheered.

The Road Warriors are coming back stronger then ever with eighteen Bomber type cars that are called the thundering heard and they don’t leave anything on the track except maybe some oil from blown motors, that is how they Roll. It was a tough night for Blaine Baer of Port Charlotte that led the first five laps but after several restarts had the eighty car of Richard Nelson take over the lead and go onto win the feature. Baer would run second to Nelson until his motor blew with five laps to go which ended up being the longest five laps of the night with six different cautions coming out on lap twenty, but the fans stayed to the end. When the Checkers finally were waived it was Richard Nelson coming across the line first with Shane Leonard second and Randy Kile third who later did not pass the tech inspection which moved Chris Scott up to the third spot.

Fab 4 was the last class to finish off the night with most of the fans staying around to see every bit of racing the PGS drivers had to offer. It was another fast, caution free race that saw the eighty one of Brittany Barr out of St Pete take the checkers first and Zac Csmpilonga from Bradenton second and third would go to David Patterson of Port Charlotte.

Ocala Speedway Succumbs to Heavy Rains

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  While racers and fans might think that a rainout on a beautiful weather night is some sort of April Fools joke, the unfortunate truth is that the Friday, April 1st program at Ocala Speedway was washed out by torrential rains that fell through much of the week, resulting in a muddy track that could not be dried out in time for racing.  So on a day where the sun shined brightly and temperatures were in the 70’s, things will be dark and quiet at Florida’s oldest speedway tonight. Some estimates show that up to 5 inches of rain fell on Ocala Speedway over Wednesday and Thursday, which led to the Friday cancellation.

While this week’s races fell victim to the wet conditions, the Mini Stocks will get a reprieve and will be added to the schedule for Friday, April 8th.  In addition to the Mini Stocks, fans will see action from the Late Models, Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators.  Other than the Mini Stocks being added to the schedule for next week, there are no plans to make up any of the other canceled races.

And April 8th will be the final night of regular racing at Ocala Speedway before the Monster Jam Summer Tour returns with the top monster trucks in the nation live, up close, and in person, performing on the infield at America’s Dirt Track.  For ticket information, or to see the complete racing schedule, please visit us online at www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

April 2nd Racing at Punta Gorda Speedway

From Linda Jericka

Another great week of racing is planned for PGS.

Pro Trucks, Rookie Trucks, T.Q. Midgets, Pro 4, Fab 4, Road Warriors, Legends and Bandoleros.

Rumor has it that Bubba the Love Sponge will give it another try in the Pro Truck class after his first night out in the class he was caught up in the 6 truck pile up on the front stretch and his son Tyler Clem will be running in the bandolero class.

Last time the Road Warriors had a night off, they came back with a strong 19 cars in the class and put on a heck of of show.

The PGS drivers have been racing in front of some of the largest crowds the track has had in years,  and the large crowds have been watching some of the best racing in the state.

It is a night you do not want to miss.

Front gates open at 5:00pm with racing to start at 6:00 pm.

All that racing for only $10.00, so bring a friend.

Admission is $10.00 for Adults $8.00 for seniors Children 12 and under are FREE.

5 Flags To Play Host To Modified Madness on April 8th

From Tim Bryant

The 2011 racing season got off to a tremendous start here at 5 Flags Speedway on March, 25th , and we’re thinking that it just might indicate a re-birth of racing excitement along the Gulf Coast. That excitement will without a doubt continue on April, 8th, as we play host to a night of Modified Madness. This very special event will put the Modified Division on center stage. Also on the program will be Sportsman, Bombers, and for the first time ever, the Pro Challenge cars will grace the high banks of Five Flags Speedway. But it’s the Modifieds who will run the night’s biggest event. After a round of Time Trials, the Mighty Mods will line up for a 50 Lap, $1,200.00 to win dash to the checkers. New for 2011, are inverted starts, (6, 8, or 10 cars), and double file restarts.
