From Linda Jericka

It was another great night of racing at Punta Gorda Speedway were the fans packed the speedway to see some of the best racing action in the state. When the Super Late Models run, the weekend starts on Friday nights with practice, and a big old homemade BBQ pit party. Word spread quickly through the racing community that there were twenty four “Super” drivers that were on hand at the speedway to go for 100 laps and the fans came out in full force to show their support. Cooper scores 2nd feature win at Citrus County Speedway

From John Chance

Saturday night saw the return of the Open Wheel Modified division after nearly a month off. 18 drivers decided to tackle the friendliest track in the south for some of the best racing they have seen all year. After the 4 row inversion, the 19 of Tommy Schnader would lead the field to the green with the 2 of Steven Hise along side for the 40 lap feature. Schnader would jump out to an early lead while Hise would try to find a hole to get to the bottom. That hole would never come, and on lap 4, Hise would end his night in the turn 2 wall after a chain reaction incident. On the restart, Schnader would get pressure right away from the 98 of Robbie Cooper, with the 25 of L J Grimm a close 3rd. Schnader and Cooper would then wage one of the best side by side races of the year, racing door to door for nearly 10 laps. It was some of the hardest and cleanest racing the division has seen all year. Cooper would finally find enough traction on the high side to take the lead just past the half way mark of the race. Grimm would then go to work on Schnader, and make the same outside move to take over the second position. The race was slowed by several cautions in the second half of the race, which gave the top 3 drivers another chance at victory on each restart. Grimm had the fastest car on the track in the last 15 laps, looking high and low on Cooper’s black 98 machine. Grimm would get a few good looks on the inside, but Cooper would squeeze his way back in front before the next corner each time. Cooper would go on to take his second feature win of the year, followed by the hard charging Grimm in 2nd, and Schnader running a strong 3rd. Cooper thanked Schnader in victory lane for running such a clean race, and commented that he was completely worn out after the race. Cooper was operating on only 1 hour of sleep, and the race took all he had left. Grimm was happy with his strong showing in 2nd , which was one of his best finishes of the year. Schnader enjoyed the hard racing, and was happy with 3rd, he and his team were racing on used tires unlike the other top 2 drivers. The race was slowed by several minor spins and incidents, some of these incidents spilled over into the pit area after the races were over. 2 drivers were fined and suspended for violating the tracks conduct policy on and off the race track. Heat race winners were the 53 of Doug Miller and the 70 of defending points champion Jeremy Gerstner.

17 sportsman took the green for their 25 lap feature with the 56 of Brandon Morris bringing the field to the green, and jumping out to an early lead. The 55 of points leader Ernie Reed would fall in to the 2nd position from his outside front row starting spot. It wouldn’t take long for 2nd row starter Aaron Williamson to take his 13 machine to 2nd, getting by Reed. Williamson has been tough to beat once he can see the leader, so everyone could sense that a battle for the lead was coming. A lap 18 caution would give Williamson the chance he needed on a restart. Williamson would get underneath the 56 of Morris on the restart, but Morris would dig deep and find a little extra to pull back in to the lead. Morris would go on to take the victory with Williamson settling for 2nd. Morris looks to have finally shook the money off his back that he has been carrying all season at Citrus. Points leader Ernie Reed would battle back to 3rd at the checkers after falling to 5th in the middle part of the race. Heat race winners were Shelton Bowers in the 32 and Cody Stickler in the 99.

A short 10 car Taylor Made Homes Pure Stock field saw defending point champion David Walls launch his racer from the pole position to the early lead. Walls would pull out to a comfortable lead, but back in the pack the 9 of Tyler Stickler, the 39 of Carl Peters, and the 15 of Levi Roberts were chasing him down. Stickler would catch Walls on lap 5, and make the pass for the lead on lap 8. The race ran the entire 20 lap distance caution free, which left the other drivers out of laps to challenge Stickler for the victory. Stickler would take the win followed by the 35 of walls in 2nd, and the 39 of Peters in 3rd. Stickler’s victory was almost amazing after an ugly incident in his heat race. Stickler plowed in to the back of the 20 of Chris Ickes on the front straight-a-way severely damaging both machines. Ickes would suffer a broken axle and rear frame damage which ended his night. Stickler’s car was a mess, but his crew managed to fix his Camaro, which enabled him to take his 2nd feature win of the year. Young Dustin Dinkins took the win in the heat race, and followed it up with a strong 5th place finish in the feature.

13 Sheldon Palmes Insurance Mini Stocks battled it out in their 20 lap feature event. Pole sitter Shannon Kennedy took the early lead from his pole position, but was quickly under fire from the 77 of Kevin Knox and the 32 of Jeremy Sharrone. Knox would make the move for the lead first, and Sharrone would follow him by Kennedy on lap 5. 8 laps later, Sharrone would take his 32 machine by Knox for the lead, and looked to be headed to victory. The lead would be short lived however, Sharrone would spin his racer to the infield on the entry to turn 1 just after taking the lead. The caution would come out, and Sharrone would be sent to the rear. On the restart, 11th place starter Jeff Eberly would bring the field to the green, and go on to take his 5th feature win of the year. Eberly has been on a roll as of late, only being beat after a technical disqualification earlier in the season. Kevin Knox would hold on to 2nd spot, after a few weeks of terrible luck, it was almost like a victory. Ashley Williamson would charge to 3rd place after starting dead last in the field. Heat race winners were Eberly and Sharrone.

Wayne Calkins would lead the Pro Figure 8 race almost wire to wire after starting in the 3rd position. The top 4 drivers in this race were never more than a few feet apart for most of the 20 lap event. Calkins would hold on to take the victory for his 2nd feature win of the year, and gain a few points in the championship battle. Following Calkins to the stripe were the 0 of Jimmy Thompson in 2nd, the 6 of point leader Joey Catarelli in 3rd, and the 01 of Mason Love in 4th.

9 Florida TQ Midgets made the trip to Citrus for their 20 lap feature. The 51 of young Chris Gimmler would jump out to the early lead, but coming from the rear of the field was the 30 of Mike Belusar. Belusar would make the winning pass on lap 17 and go on to take the victory. Gimmler would hold on to 2nd position over the 7 of pole sitter Jamie Barnum.

In other racing action, Jerry Mullins took the victory in the Cars of Yesterday Sportsman division, and Tom Meyer took the Cars of Yesterday modified division victory in his 38 Ford Sedan.

Next Saturday night Citrus County Speedway will welcome back wingless sprint cars for their 2nd race of the season. Also headlining the race card will be the 2nd annual Frank

Citrus County Speedway welcomes Donnie Lewis

From John Chance

It is with great pleasure that Citrus County Speedway welcomes Donnie Lewis as the tracks new Technical Inspector. Donnie brings his over 45 years of racing experience to one of the states oldest speedways. Donnie has served at Tech Inspector at New Smyrna, Orlando, Lake City, Citrus, and Sunshine Speedway over the past 31 years. He is very proud to say he has never been fired from that position in those 31 years, which is nothing short of a miracle in racing.

Donnie would like to thank all the people he has worked with in the past, he thinks they are all trying to do a great job. Donnie most recently has served as Tech Inspector for Lake City speedway, and would like to thank Joyce Lankford for the hard work she still continues to do. Donnie is very excited to come back to Citrus, it’s where he first got his start in racing, and he has many friends in and around the track.

This Saturday night will be the first official night in his new position, and the speedway is excited to start a new chapter with Donnie. For all of those with Tech questions for Citrus County Speedway, you can contact Donnie at the phone numbers listed below.

Round 2 of the all new Allen Turner Series for the Pro Late Models headlines the night at 5 Flags with the running of the Sonata 100

From Tim Bryant

The Pensacola area has finally received some much needed rain to cool things off a bit, but the action will be scorching hot when racing returns to 5 Flags Speedway this Friday Night. Round 2 of the all new Allen Turner Series for the Pro Late Models will headline the night, with the running of the Sonata 100. The first of the newly formatted Pro Late Model events was held on April 22nd, and what a race it was. Montgomery Alabama driver Hunter Robbins emerged as the victor, over Texas standout Brandon Bendele, and Georgia hotshoe Dwayne Buggay. These three will be back this Friday, as will a host of other top competitors including defending 5 Flags Champ D.J. VanderLey, Super Late Model standouts Augie Grill and Bubba Pollard, April 22nd‘s polesitter Thomas Praytor, Pensacola drivers Logan Boyett, Eddie Craig, Shana Ard and a host of others.

In addition to Friday Nights PLM action, there’s plenty more in store with Super Stocks, Sportsman, and Bombers all taking to the high banked oval. Shannon Jackson currently sits atop the Top Gun standings for the Super Stock Division, but has only a slim 12 point lead over Bubba Winslow. And who would be sitting on the point of the highly competitive Sportsman Division? None other than Marty White in his 102.7 Chevrolet. The Sportsman guys have put on incredible racing this season and the standings are the closest of any Division. And ole Curtis Faircloth found his way back to victory lane in the most recent Bomber Feature, once again establishing himself as the driver to beat. But you know, the more you win, the more guys want to beat you, so, look out Curtis.

As if all this wasn’t enough action for Friday Night, it also serves as the night the kids look forward to the most. The Annual 5 Flags Speedway Kid’s Bike races, presented by Tracy Goodson’s Beef O’ Bradys, Panhandle Motorsports, Buggy Worx Golf Carts, and Fast Eddie’s Fun Center. There will be 4 age groups of riders, and every kid will be a Winner, receiving a trophy, and an ice cream, as well as coupons to Fast Eddies. This is genuinely one of the most gratifying events to watch of the entire season. Bike race info can attained by calling the track at 850-944-8400.

Late Models Headline Five Divisions at Volusia

by BJ Cavin- VSP Media
BARBERVILLE, FL-  Racing will return to The World’s Fastest Half Mile this Saturday night as five divisions will continue the trek toward their year end championships and provide ample fun and excitement for local race fans.  The Quality Brands Budweiser Modifieds will be taking a weekend off while the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Fiat Late Models will be back on the clay as everyone chases Donnie Chappell.  The Daytona Machine Shop Sportsman Division will also be back, as well as the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Volusia Speedway’s fender banging Thunder Stocks, and the Sparkle and Shine Car Wash Challenger Division.

The situation in the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Fiat Late Model Division is simple.  Donnie Chappell has established himself as heads above the rest of the bunch, and no one has the first clue as to how to catch him, much less beat him.  Even if the other racers wanted to play dirty and put him into the wall, they can’t even get close enough to try unless they spot him blowing past as he puts them a lap down.  As one racer mentioned a couple of weeks ago, somebody has to step up and match Chappell’s magic or this season is already over and done, but so far even racers visiting from other tracks have been unable to reel the 25 car in.  So will “The Chappell Show” continue, or will someone step up and figure out how to preempt the scheduled programming?

If the season points totals were based on the car instead of the driver, the “Incredible 11” would have already shifted the focus of the Daytona Machine Shop Sportsman Division to the battle for second place.  But the 11 machine has a “tag team” duo at the controls in the form of Scott Lagasse and last year’s champion, Aaron Barsness, so the points earned are split between the two of them, much to the benefit of the rest of that division.  But no matter which of the two are in the car, the 11 is fast and heading toward the front, and other racers are having a hard time keeping it behind them.  Meanwhile Corey Holley left the building early last Saturday with mechanical issues, but Steve Shead stepped up his game and managed to hold Scott Lagasse at bay for some time before settling for second place behind him.  So Shead may be the best bet to slow down the “Incredible Duo” and this Saturday might be the night that he does it.

There seems to be a revolving door policy in effect for the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks as many racers are here one week and gone the next, but Philip Brown stays at home on the big half mile every weekend and also stays in front of the pack, establishing himself as the guy to beat.  Brown won again last Saturday night and will be back to try and make it three in a row this weekend, but depending on who shows up to race and how much success challengers like Mick Kulack and Chris Lane may have, Brown may have his work cut out for him this time around.

Tom Hughes also wants to make it three wins in a row as he takes on Volusia’s Thunder Stocks this Saturday night, but Alan Peacock might want to bust up Hughes’ party plans after finishing behind the 29 car two weeks in a row.  The surprise last weekend was DJ Nobles, who came from deep in the pack and made his way to second place, and Brian Schrunk who found himself in fourth place when the checkers waved.  Their success is evidence that other drivers are stepping up their game and catching up to the big shots, and that means that the competition level is only getting higher.

After dropping a Sparkle and Shine Car Wash Challenger race two weeks ago, Casey Feaster changed his tactics and found a new way to win this past Saturday night, firming up his position at the top of the season points race.  At the same time Ray Hunter found out that he can’t beat the 20 car every week, and Feaster’s main rival, RJ Glaser, almost fell out of the top five finishers late in the race.  But Feaster can’t get too comfortable at the top of the points heap because Glaser is close enough to reach up and jerk him down a notch, and that could happen this Saturday night if circumstances allow.  So the rivalry will continue regardless of what Hunter does, and chances are that Glaser and Feaster will be a lot closer together at the end of the race this time around.

Volusia Speedway Park will open the grandstand gate at 5:30PM this Saturday, with racing action scheduled for 7PM.  As usual, fans can expect a lot of excitement, plus great prizes provided by VSP’s awesome sponsors, including Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley-Davidson, Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Fiat, Sparkle and Shine Car Wash, and Big Kahuna’s Bar and Grill in Daytona Beach.  For a look at the updated racing schedule or for more information about The World’s Fastest Half Mile, visit us online at www.TheVolusiaSpeedway.com.
