Cory Abbott wins it all in US Legends National Qualifier

From Linda Jericka

Punta Gorda Speedway wins against Mother Nature, with rain and lightning all around the state and the track, not one drop of rain fell on the speedway Saturday.

Never count PGS out on Saturday Nights because they do what it takes to let the drivers that pull from all over the state have a chance to race.

With Qualifying and heat races done it was time to go racing and first up for the night was the Fab 4 class that had a heck of a battle going. The Pink rocket of Jessica Ostrovskis got an early pass for the lead over Zac Campilonga on lap two till Skyler Null driving the 98 lead in lap four. JRC Jess and Campilonga’s battle ended with Jess bringing out the only caution of the race with a flat tire. Jess returned and while Null had a good lead the 91 and 3 continued their battle till the end. Null won but would be to light as he crossed the scales in tech giving the win to the girl that fought her way back to the second spot over Campilonga and Mike Simmons would move up to the third spot.

Bandoleros ran next and saw the entire race dominated by the 19 of Keith Sinkula out of Stuart who never lifted off the gas for the entire race. Trevor Taylor cruised into second Johnny Holmes third, Tyler Clem fourth and Noah Weaver rounded out the top five.

It took the rookie trucks a few times to get the first lap in as they all wanted to win it on the first lap. After they settled down and warnings from the flagman it was Kelli Burns of Port Charlotte that lead the entire race. Chad Chastain out of Alva thought he had that second spot wrapped up till a caution with two to go for Mathew Green tightened the field back up. Chastain, Atwell and Coty Martell all battling for that second spot as they see the white flag, Chastain brushed the back stretch wall which gave way to Atwell to take over second and Chastain would end up third.

Pro 4 class saw the 00 of Dan Collver run start to finish while Cody Allen did everything he could but came up short to finish second and Dylan Bigley third.

The US Legends National Qualifier race ran for 35 laps were eighteen drivers showed up to put on one heck of an exciting race that only saw one caution but some of the best racing of the night. Speedway owner offered a two hundred and fifty dollar bounty to any driver that wanted to start in the rear and try to win the race and one driver stepped up for the challenge. Cory Abbott from Apopka Fl drew the number one pill to start on the pole but took the challenge to start in the rear, fast qualifier was the 7X of Dakota Baggette of lakeland who started outside the third row. One more bonus of one hundred dollars was awarded from speedway owner, Kevin Williams to the driver that towed the farthest to race and that was awarded to Paul Shafer from Chicago who was in North Carolina racing in the Summer Shoot out. The green flag dropped and the race was on and Cory Abbott had made his way up to second when the caution came out on lap nine. Abbott jumped into the lead and fast qualifier Dakota Baggette got around Chase Fitzgerald on lap twenty to take over the second spot and challenge Abbott. With no other cautions and lap traffic coming into play, Abbott would go on to win the feature and the bonus money with Baggette second Chase Fitzgerald second Austin Blankenship four and Paul Shafer fifth.

Sportsman had a fifty lap feature that saw some of the regular drivers still not back from the last two races that saw some pretty tore up race cars. Brian Richardson won the last feature and set fast time, but it would be Stuart Vandevender that won the draw and started on the pole. Bill Vandevender started farther back in the field and by lap eighteen had made his way up to challenge his brother Stuart for the lead and made the pass on lap eighteen. Bill’s car was on a rail while Timmy Lowe was on the hunt for that trip to victory lane and at the half way mark Richardson’s motor went and James Dubose also with problems pulled it to the infield. With the field tightened up and still twenty laps left, Stuart was trying what he could to keep Greg Krom from taking the third spot until they saw five laps to go. With the pressure from Krom, Stuart left enough room for Krom to get inside and then closed it off, Krom spun and the call was on Stuart, sending him to the rear. The 36 of Stuart hit Krom under caution sending him to the pits with four to go. On the restart it was Lowe and Krom battling side by side and Krom gave it to much as he spun on his own sending him to the back with two to go. Bill Vandevender finally saw the checker flag and took the car to the winners circle with Timmy Lowe second and a long time coming third place went to Donnie Ollie Jr and Greg Krom made it back to fourth.

Pro trucks ran thirty five laps and saw the 41 truck of Steve Darvalics lead the entire race with Ross Chastain of Alva battle through the field for a respectable second, T.J. Duke third.

Road Warriors were the last race of the night were Jason Miller lead the first fifteen laps until the eight of Shane Leonard made the pass to take over the lead and go onto to win. Miller would hold on to the second spot holding off Richard Nelson who came in third.

Next week the speedway will be closed in observance of July 4 th, but visit the speedway website for all updates at www.puntagordaspeedway.com or find them on Facebook at Punta Gorda Speedway

Rescheduled Scott Thompson Memorial Marks A Switch to Fridays at Volusia

by BJ Cavin- VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- For the second weekend in a row, weather put a stop to a scheduled night of racing at Volusia Speedway Park, this time forcing the postponement of the 6th Annual Scott Thompson Memorial, featuring the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series and the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Fiat Late Models. Fans and racers should take note that the reschedule date for the race will mark a dramatic change in the operation of Volusia Speedway, and a retooled 2011 racing schedule will be posted at www.TheVolusiaSpeedway.com very soon.

Twenty-two late models were in the pits and in the process of preparing their machines to race when steady rains moved in at around 5:30PM. At that point the track was in good shape so race officials decided to wait the rain out, as radar indicated that it should not last for very long. But the rain persisted as the storm system slowed over the track, and two hours later it became evident that a decision would have to be made. Volusia Speedway general manager, Ken Sands, and United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series director Ken Kinney, explained to the racers that it would take at least two hours to get the speedway into any sort of shape to race, and the racers decided at that time that the best move would be to postpone the event. The prevailing force behind the decision was that the racers wanted to give the Thompson family, and the fans, the best event that they could, and therefore reschedule the race for a later date when weather might not be an a issue.

The entire program for Saturday, June 25th, including all divisions and the 50 lap Scott Thompson Memorial, has been rescheduled for July 22nd, making it a Friday night event. That Friday will also mark a switch in race nights for Volusia Speedway Park, as the big half mile will begin running on Friday nights instead of on Saturdays. That decision came as a result of the fan and racer poll that was taken last month, and in response to over abundance of Saturday night programs across Florida. Ken Sands noted that the new night will afford racers the opportunity to race wherever they wished on Saturdays, yet still be able to take on the big half mile on Friday nights.

Volusia Speedway Park will be closed on Saturday, July 2nd for the Independence Holiday Weekend and to allow fans and racers to enjoy the festivities at Daytona International Speedway. The World’s Fastest Half Mile will return to racing action on Saturday, July 9th with the rescheduled “Holy Cow 25” Jack Miller Memorial Sprint Car Race, sponsored by Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley-Davidson. VSP will race on Saturday for the final time on July 16th before switching to Fridays the following weekend on July 22nd.

BRP Says Do Not Stop Believing

Determination to race pays off at Bubba Raceway Park,

The fans came out in force despite the early rains for action from the Late Models, UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds, Gladiators, and Florida Mini Sprints Association. With all of Florida rained out, Bubba made the call to put the cars on the clay, and the racing showed how appreciative the drivers were. Only the Late Models were racing for double points as the rest of the divisions will have their own double points nights later in the season. (more…)

Citrus County Speedway Drivers give fans early fireworks

Compliments of Johnny Sanders and John Chance

Mother Nature blessed us with some much needed rainfall in the Central Florida area for much of the day Saturday. Early afternoon rain showers had many of the states race tracks huddled around radar images trying to find a way to get their racing programs in. Desoto Speedway, New Smyrna Speedway, and Volusia Speedway park all fell victim to the rain and were forced to cancel their shows. But once again, the friendliest track in the south found a way to get it done. (more…)

Experience Prevails in Victory Lane at East Bay

Buzzie Reutimann drives to his second win in a row.

June 25, 2011 – For the most part of the day, it seemed like Mother Nature was going to be the winner tonight. But, with patience and the hard working efforts of the East Bay Staff, the track was ready for racing tonight here at The Clay By The Bay.

First Feature of the night belonged to the Street Stocks. Just before their Feature was an autograph session featuring the Street Stocks. Kids of all ages were able to see and get their favorite driver’s autograph.

Driver’s then strapped in and got ready for their race. Mike Wilson and last week’s Feature winner, Jim Baker, made up the front row. But it was Tim Gay who took off from the start of the green flag as he started in the eight spot and charged up thru the field. Never looking back, he easily picked up his second feature win of the year in the division. Following him in second was Jeff Rodgers who started in the seventh spot. Jim Baker picked up third while Tim’s son and current point leader, Jarod Gay, picked up fourth and Mike Wilson rounded out the top five.
Tim also won the heat event earlier on.

Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds were next in line with their 15 Lap Feature event. The veteran Buzzie Reutimann and Rookie candidate Thomas Pratt made up the front row. Caution came out early as problems occurred for the 35 of Jerry Bruce, Jr.. Reutimann, Pratt, Sanders, Crouse and Inman were your top five. Caution came out again on lap six and Aileen Collins in her new ride spun on the front stretch with everyone avoiding her. Caution flew two more times before it was all said and done as the Veteran Buzzie Reutimann picked up his second feature win of the year. Thomas Pratt picked up second while last year’s Champion, Austin Sanders came home third with John Inman fourth, and Roger Crouse fifth. Reutimann and Pratt were also preliminary winners for their heat races.

Old Time Mods were back in action tonite as Bob Fink and Jamie Frankland started up front. But, the hard charging Tommy Zwally started fifth and by lap two was in the lead as he passed the leader Jamie Frankland and never looked back as they ran their entire feature caution free. Jamie Frankland finished second with Dan Darnell third. Lars Amundsen in his familiar 22 finished fourth and his son Zack finished fifth. George Hall and Lars Amundsen were your heat winners.

Late Models were next up with last year’s Champion, Bryan Bernhardt and Mavrick Varnadore making up the front row. When the green flag dropped, Mavrick took the early lead, but a caution came out in turn two for the M1 of John Norris spinning and collecting five cars. All cars were able to continue. So a complete restart was in order for the start. Mavrick Varnadore once again jumped out in the early lead, but by lap four, Dave Schmauss took over the top spot. Several cautions flew through out the race, but no one could catch the 105 of Schmauss. Positions two thru five were in a constant battle between Mavrick and Travis Varnadore, Bryan Bernhardt and Ryan Mitchell. But after the checkered flag flew, it was Dave Schmauss picking up his second feature win of the year, with Travis Varnadore second, Bryan Bernhardt third, Mavrick Varnadore fourth and Ryan Mitchell finished with a top five. Travis Varnadore, Mitchell and Schmauss were heat race winners earlier on.

Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers were the final event of the night. Don R. Quinn and last weeks feature winner in her “Orange Pumpkin” was Kayla Jones. From the drop of the green flag, Kayla had a point to prove as she was the only female driver in the entire Bomber field.

As they headed into turn one, Kayla took off and left the guys behind. But, its was Don R. Quinn who brought out the first caution on lap 7 collecting three more cars. Two more cautions were brought out as Dalton Epps and Jimmy Odell both had problems. Kayla was holding off hard charger and three time feature winner, Troy “Socks” Dittebrand and Roberto Morfin, Jr. Jason and Thomas Burnside also were charging towards the front as well trying to pick up a win as well.

But when all was said and done, Kayla proved to the guys that she is definitely there to race.Troy Dittebrand finished second while Roberto Morfin, Sr. had third, but after tech, Morfin’s third place was disallowed after a tire infringement. So, that moved Jason Burnside into third while Thomas Burnside finished fourth and Randy Tyler finished fifth. Dalton Epps and Gene Gross picked up the heat wins.

Winning the two tires courtesy of the class sponsor, Q Auto & Injury’s Limited Late Models was Shane Koperda.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, July 9, 2011. Headlining that night will be the Q Auto & Injury Attorney’s Limited Late Models, Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modifieds, Street Stocks, Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers, Dirt Daubers and the popular Fan Participation races. For more information, go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office. Have a Happy and Safe Fourth of July.

Hard to believe it is midseason at 5 Flags

From Tim Bryant

It’s hard to believe that Friday Night’s Print Now 100 will actually be the half way point in the 2011 Racing Season here at 5 Flags Speedway.

With a limited number of events on the schedule, it seems only appropriate that each one has special meaning. This week’s Blizzard Series Race #3 has several interesting storylines, one of which is the Race Sponsor itself.

Deborah Holland and her husband John, have been longtime supporters of 5 Flags Speedway and it’s events, mostly thru their USA Digital branding.

Still affiliated with the Sprint Wireless brand, Deborah has expanded along with business partner Kim Franklin, and now own and operate Print Now, a full service printing, graphics, and specialty advertising store.

As part of Friday Night’s race promotion, Deborah and Kim will be handing out special 3D glasses to the first 1000 fans thru the gate, guaranteeing to make viewing our gigantic Fireworks show even more spectacular.

Special Thanks to these special people.
