Race to Honor Dennis North Added To VSP Saturday Schedule

By BJ Cavin- VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- This Saturday’s racing schedule at Volusia Speedway Park, headlined by the Jack Miller Memorial “Holy Cow 25” featuring the Sprint Cars sponsored by Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley-Davidson, just got a little richer as a new “Dash for Cash” been added to an already exciting card.  Volusia Speedway lost one of its own racers over the holiday weekend as two time champion Dennis North passed away.  In addition to racers passing their helmets in order to benefit his surviving family, the “Dash for Cash” will honor North’s memory by giving something to the racers in the two divisions in which North competed.

Dennis North was well known as the driver of the number 88 “Low Buck Racing” machines in both the Thunder Stock and Street Stock Divisions, and with that in mind the Volusia Speedway Thunder Stocks, and the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, will participate in an 8 lap Dash for Cash that will pay $88 to the winner.  The competitors will race together with top finishers awarded in their respective division, plus other prizes which will be announced on Saturday Night.  Family and friends of Dennis North are also arranging for an auction/raffle to take place as well, again benefiting North’s wife and young child.

Fans are asked to remember Dennis North in a show of support to the family by wearing their Low Buck Racing shirts, or by wearing red to the races on Saturday night.  Gates open at 5:30 with racing set to get underway at 7PM, featuring Florida’s top sprint cars in the Jack Miller Memorial “Holy Cow 25” plus the Florida Mini Sprint Association.  And in addition to the two divisions running in the Dash for Cash events, fans will see action from the Daytona Machine Shop Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, the Volusia Speedway Thunder Stocks, and the Sparkle and Shine Car Wash Challengers.  The Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association will also be present and running their wide variety of vintage race cars.

BRONSON SPEEDWAY SEES CARS ON THE TRACK FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY

From Dave Westerman
After many months of inactivity, Bronson Speedway finally saw race cars
turning laps as several drivers took advantage of a special practice
session held on the 4th of July Monday.

Around 14 race teams took advantage of the opportunity to check
out the facility and get a few laps. Open Wheel Modifieds, Legend
Cars, Pure Stock and Thunder Stock classes were represented and
even a Figure 8 car was in attendance. The new ownership was
pleased with the turnout on what obviously was both short notice
and a holiday as well. What may have been even more surprising
was a rather large turnout of fans who showed up to view the action
for free from the grandstands.

A second open practice is scheduled for this coming Sunday,
July 10th. Pitgates will open at 1PM with practice from 3-7PM.
All cars must go through a safety technical inspection before
going on the speedway. The schedule for the remainder of 2011,
classes that will be running, and rules will be unveiled at this
practice. Bronson Speedway's new Race Director and Tech
Inspector will be available to speak with during this session as well.
Once again, the grandstands will be open free of charge to the
public.

Three sets of rules have already been drawn up for competing
classes and all rules for all classes will be available by the July 10th
practice. Bronson Speedway's new website is nearly complete and
rules will be posted there as well.

Bronson Speedway looks forward to seeing even more cars at
the practice this Sunday.

Back To Business At Bubba Raceway Park

By Jimmy Rouse- Bubba Raceway Park Media
This Saturday Bubba Raceway Park returns to action after a week off in honor of the July 4th week-end. Bringing the action this week are the UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks on their Double Points night, Mini Stocks, and Gladiators. As always drivers will be gunning for wins so they can hoist the championship trophy in late November.
The UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds are as close as they get with the top 3 separated by a point. Jeff Mathews, looking for his 4th consecutive championship at Bubba Raceway Park, leads Jim Smith and Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. by 1 each. Mathews can’t rest as Smith and Lloyd have been consistently moving up in the finishing order. However, Kyle Bronson and Garret Stewart, tied at 10 behind Mathews, will be ready to strike at a mistake. Mathews and Bronson already have a win each, but Smith and Bronson are yet to win at Bubba Raceway Park. And, of course, Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. has wins in the Racecar Engineering Late Models division, but not in the UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds.
Chad Scranton won the first points race in the Hobby Stocks at Bubba Raceway Park, but holds only a 2 point lead over runner-up Tim Powers. Donnie Reed is only 5 points behind Scranton after his 3rd place finish, and Howard Osteen just 8 behind Scranton. Bud Chancey is tied with Osteen. Every driver will look for an early season win as it will matter when it comes time to hoist that season end trophy.
Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks Double Points night will be an exciting one to say the least, especially with $500 on the line. Jason Gamble will strive to hold on to his 24 point lead and nothing would be better then another win. Gamble’s lead was massive after his 3rd consecutive win, but after 3 weeks of bad luck the field has nearly caught him. Jonathan Gillette is 24 points back but on a long winless streak, and nothing would be better then closing the gap and taking a win. Vaughn Woodall is just an extra point back and wouldn’t mind taking career win #2. Gordon Cade and “The Canuck” Tim Mathieu are only 35 points behind Gamble. Mathieu has made massive gains over the past few weeks and would love to continue that. Of course, both drivers have won before, but Cade hasn’t won since his asphalt racing days and would like to take ‘close’ to ‘there.’ Double Points night will make the action in this division twice as great.
Ray Folwell leads the Mini Stocks by a margin of 13 over Brittany Yates. Of course, as team-mates they will work together until they hit that clay; then they battle for points and bragging rights in the workshop. The 16 year-old rookie Ryan Babcock has used his consitency to put his #9 in 3rd place in points, only 20 behind Folwell. Babcock won’t rest, however, as Ray Ethridge is just 10 behind him. Chris Zimmermann keeps the 10s alive as he’s 10 points behind Ethridge! Zimmermann has steadily gained knowledge of the clay to put himself in the top 5 and with 2 runner-up finishes, he wants 1 more spot. The Mini Stocks have always put on a great show and nothing less would be expected this week.
Appropriately named, “The Dominator,” Steve Cox was absent last week, but held onto his point lead. Brandon Haseleu cut the deficit down to 18 and will look to continue the cutting and the search for career win #1. Reid Christensen is 49 points behind Cox, but Christensen wants redemption for a few weeks ago. Richard Todd would like to gain some points as he’s only 10 behind Christensen. Matt Kramer is a mere 2 points behind Todd and would love to put his 77 in 4th. The Gladiators will take to the clay, but only 1 can emerge victorious.
Gates open at 4:30 with racing scheduled for 7. As always, the racing at Bubba Raceway Park on a Saturday night will be intense. For more information you can check out the Speedway website, www.bubbaracewaypark.com, or you may call the Speedway hotline.

Sprint Cars Rule This Saturday at Volusia

By BJ Cavin- VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  After nature put a damper on the festivities and forced the postponement of the Jack Miller Memorial “Holy Cow 25” last month, Volusia Speedway Park will welcome Florida’s top Sprint Cars, sponsored by Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley-Davidson, as they gather to take on each other and the World’s Fastest Half Mile.  The Saturday, July 9th event will also feature action from the Florida Mini Sprint Association, plus fans will see the first appearance of the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association at VSP in 2011.  And as if that were not enough, four of Volusia’s regular racing divisions will be in action as well. Citrus County Speedway prepares for championship battles

From John Chance

This Saturday night, July 9th, the Citrus County Speedway begins the second half of the 2011 racing season. There will be no rest for the championship contenders, as the speedway will race every Saturday night, from now till the season finale on November 12th. This year the Speedway has seen over 300 individual drivers and cars come to compete at the friendliest track in the south. Of those 300 drivers, over 50 different drivers have come away with feature wins, which leaves the other 250 still hungry for a victory. In today’s column, we’ll take a look at the championship battles in each division, as we prepare for the speedway’s own race to the championship.

Over 45 Super Late Model drivers have tried to take home a victory this season. Of those 45, only 4 have been able to get the job done. 5 time champion Herb Neumann Jr sits on top of the point standings once again, holding an 11pt lead over Scott Grosenbacher, and a 13pt lead over Danny Maddox in 3rd. Neumann has put one feature win under his belt this year, as well as a strong 2nd place finish in the non-points UPS 100 lapper back on June 4th. Joining Neumann in victory lane this year have been Danny Maddox, Darryl Shelnut, and Tim Russell in the UPS 100.

The Open Wheel Modified division has seen some competitive racing this season. 35 drivers have registered to race this year with 5 of those drivers taking home feature wins. Bobby Ervien has lead the points since the 2nd race of the season, and just took home his first feature win at the last race on June 25th. Ervien has been Mr. Consistency, finishing near the front almost every night. Chasing Ervien in 2nd place is Richie Smith, who leads all drivers in the division with 3 feature wins. Smith has really got his program together at the mid point of the season, after a tough start which saw 2 DNF’s early on. Following them in the 3rd position is Doug Miller who has logged 1 feature win this year, and is putting all his focus on the chase for the championship. Defending champion Jeremy Gerstner sits 4th with one feature win, and Robbie Cooper is 5th with 2 feature wins this year.

There was great anticipation in the off season for the Sportsman division. Rumors circulated of many drivers building new sportsman cars, which set the division up to be the biggest all year. Unlike many racing rumors, this one was true. 48 drivers have challenged the ¼ asphalt oval this year, which is the largest of any division. Of those 48, only 6 have pulled there cars into victory lane. Ernie Reed sits on top on the division with 2 feature wins, and holds a 33 pt lead over Cody Stickler in 2nd, and a 35pt lead over 3rd place Brandon Morris. Reed is a speedway veteran, and you can see his years of experience working to his advantage this year, taking what his car gives him on each night. Behind him 2 young guns in Stickler and Morris are chasing after him. Stickler has 1 feature win with Morris bring home 2 checkered flags. Both of these young drivers have seen their youthful aggression cost them as they try to chase down Reed for the points championship. Other feature winners this year have been Aaron Williamson (1), Richie Smith (2), and Brett Jenkins (1).

The Street Stock division has seen 40 different drivers try to achieve their goal of victory this year. There have been 8 different drivers take home a checkered flag, which ties them with the Mini Stocks for most different winners this year. Curtis Flanagan is on top of the mountain holding a 68pt lead over Bill Ryan in 2nd, and an 86pt over Bubba Martone in 3rd. Flanagan has taken home 2 feature victories, and has been the car to beat all season. But as we approached the mid season break, the other drivers are starting to get their cars dialed in, and challenging his grip on the division. Other feature winners this year are: Bill Ryan (1), Kyle Peters (3), Tim Wilson (1), John Makula (1), Michael Stalnaker (1), Jeff Stalnaker Jr (2), and Mike Wilson (1).

The Taylor Made Homes Pure Stocks started the season off strong with 47 drivers competing this year. 7 drivers have been able to take home victories this year. Defending champion David Walls took over the point lead early in March, and has continued to stretch that lead out to a 158pt margin, which is the largest in any division at the speedway. Walls just recently debut a new car, and drove it to his 2nd feature win of the year in the last night of racing before the break. Glenn Colyer sits 2nd in the points standings and holds a 41pt gap over 3rd place Tyler Stickler. Levi Roberts has been the man to beat, leading the division with 5 feature wins. Roberts is running a limited schedule this year, which leaves him 4th in the points standings. Other feature winners this year have been: Tyler Stickler (2), Carl Peters (2), Sheri Makula (1), Steve Stineduf (1), and James Peters (1).

The Modified Mini Stocks have been a 3 man show this year. Only Chris Allen (2), Jesse Henley (1), and defending champion Clint Foley (3), have taken home feature wins over the 27 other drivers. Allen sits on top of the points with a 14pt lead over Henley in 2nd, and a 21pt lead over Foley in 3rd. Foley debut a new car last race, and seems to be poised to make a strong run for the crown. Henley is looking for the little extra to put him over the top and challenge for the points lead.

The Sheldon Palmes Insurance Mini Stocks have only had 25 different drivers register to compete this year. But almost 1/3 of those drivers have been able to take home a feature win, which makes it the most competitive division at the speedway. Sonya Heater has put together a string of great finishes to take the points lead at the half way point of the season. Heater holds a slim 6pt lead over 2nd place Jeremy Sharrone, and a 7pt lead over 3rd place Kevin Stone. This is the closest points battle at the speedway, and has gone back and forth all season between Heater and Stone. Sharrone is trying to shake the gremlins out of his racer, and have some more consistency for the 2nd half of the year. Jeff Eberly got a late start to the season, but has put 6 feature wins in the books in short time, which leads all drivers at the speedway. Other feature winners this year are: Jeremy Sharrone (1), Chris Snow (1), Kevin Stone (1), Shannon Kennedy, (1), Ashlee Williamson (1), and defending champion Rick Kuhn (1).

Pro Figure 8’s have had 22 drivers try to avoid the intersection mayhem with 7 drivers taking home victories. Wayne Calkins sits on top of the points with a 6pt lead over Joey Catarelli in 2nd, and a 32pt lead over Cliff Rousseau in 3rd. Calkins and Catarelli seem to be the two drivers that will battle to the championship trophy. But a little bad luck on their parts, could bring the rest of the field into contention. Feature winners this year have been: Calkins (2), Catarelli (1), Rousseau (1), Neil Herne (1), Mason Love (1), James Crawford (2), and Robbie Hage (1)

The Street Stock/Pure Stock figure 8’s have quickly become a crowd favorite with 27 drivers competing and 3 of them taking home feature wins. Eric Sharrone holds a 12pt lead over former figure 8 champion Ronnie Schrefiels in 2nd, and a 46pt lead over Thomas Peet in 3rd. This division has provided some of the most excitement all year, as well as some of the biggest wrecks also. Only the top 3 drivers have been able to take feature wins this year with Sharrone have 2, Schrefiels 2, and Peet 1.

This Saturday night Citrus County Speedway begins the 2nd half of the 2011 season with the Open Wheel Modifieds, Sportsman, Sheldon Palmes Insurance Mini Stocks, Taylor Made Homes Pure Stocks, Pro Figure 8’s, and the Outlaw Modified Mini’s. The last race saw sparks fly as tempers got the best of a few drivers, which makes for great anticipation for this Saturday night. Gates open at 4 pm and racing starts at 6pm, visit the track website at www.citruscountyspeedway.com for complete details, or call the speedway office at (352)726-9339. See you at the races!
