Short track racing since 1954 |
|
|
|
In 1954 well before such modern amenities such as air conditioning and modern pesticides, home to 12 foot alligators, deadly
rattlesnakes, and mosquito hoards big enough to scare even brave souls, a barren piece of marshland in South Florida was transformed into one of the most famous speedways in America.
Emerging from
the peaceful beauty of the "River of Grass" known as the Everglades, Hialeah was opened on a muggy Sunday afternoon in July 1954 and the fans saw Al Powell win the first heat race ever at the
speedway running a 1937 Ford. Later that day Herb Tillman won the first feature. The following year a young man of seventeen named Bobby Allison began his racing career using the assumed name of Bob
Sunderman, at his dad's insistence. He drove a 1938 Chevy.
The names are synonymous with short track stock car racing, Bobby and Donnie Allison, Red Farmer, Larry Rogero, Robert Hamke, Bobby Brack,
Pee Wee Griffin, Billy Gill, to name a few of the legends of the era. Later, racers like Gary Balough, Mario Gosselin, Mike Franklin, Jr, Mike Eddy, and Dick Anderson continued the great tradition that is
Hialeah Speedway. |

Tommy King tops FASTRUCKS at Hialeah Speedway
|
by Marty Little
HIALEAH, Fla. - Veteran Tommy King had it all his way Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway as he set fast time and then led all 75 laps in winning the Fastruck Pro feature event on the flat third-mile oval.
King, a previous winner here, had no cake walk as he was shadowed most of the way by former track regular Tim Shaffner. On the final lap Shaffner made a bold move for the lead but bobbled with both Sean Bass and Mike Powers able to get past for second and third places respectively. Shaffner crossed the stripe in fourth with Charlie Worth, another one time track regular, rounding out the top five.
The big incident of the night was a wild flip on the front straight by truck pilot Curt Haywood. The veteran's Ford F-150 got turned sideways and barrel rolled three times just past the flag stand, ending up straddling the wall with a minor carburetor fire. Despite heavy damage to the truck, a sore Haywood crawled from his mount with a wave for the crowd.
Spencer Taylor won the companion 25 lap truck run for the Fast Kids with a good drive Drew Brannon, Patrick Staropoli, David Wilson and John Kidwell.
Always steady Joe Franssen captured his first street stock 25 lap feature of the season. Points leader Buddy Ryan took the lead from T.C. McElyea on lap nine but four laps later he retired with engine woes. Franssen took command at that point and was never headed. McElyea, Stephen Kahleel and Clayton Williams were next to the stripe.
S.C. Klinger's Toyota mini stock was finally able to shake the mechanical ills as he paced all 15 laps to claim his second victory of the season. Steve Lotts claimed second money ahead of Jamie Chambers and point leader Ricky Thorpe.
Robert Seymour was the top dog in the 25 lap cyclone event and he paced the run in wire to wire fashion. Tommy Styer gave chase but settled for second money ahead of Tony Crowder, David Dielmann and Zane Reid.

Hialeah rained Out June 11th
|
by Marty Little
HIALEAH, Fla. - Heavy rains, spawned by Tropical Storm Arlene, flooded speedway grounds and forced cancellation of all racing activity Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway.
Action will resume this Saturday night (June 18) with popular Fastrucks visiting the historic Miami area oval for the second time this season. The track's regular Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and Cyclones will also be on the card with a giant demolition derby capping off the evenings events.
Hialeah Speedway, the last remaining active short track in southeast Florida, is slated to close later this summer after a colorful 51 year history of presenting weekly racing action. The nearly 33 acre parcel on which the track located is slated for development as nationally known retail stores.
