Joe Boyd Wins the Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Feature Race at ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway.

By Tom Blakeley
November 14, 2009 (Bradenton Florida) There is an old fraternity song about an old lady that lit a lantern in the shed and when the cow kicked it over, she winked her eye and said “There will be a hot time in the old town tonight”. And that is what it was tonight at ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway, a hot time. The racing was hot while the temperatures were cool and the evening had a special feel to it for race fans of all ages. The evening was dedicated to a racing legend that recently passed away, Richard Rowe. In the bright sunlight of a beautiful Florida afternoon, over 300 hundred of our racing family gathered in the bleachers of the race track to pay homage to Richard Rowe and his wonderful family. The celebration of Richard Rowe’s life was a beautiful event. Everyone that knew Richard loved him and appreciated him and we all send him off with love.
The Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Super Late Model Series roared into the old speedway tonight and they were all breathing fire. From the very fast practice laps, to the heat race, to the feature race; the temperature kept rising for this all star series. The line up read like the who’s who of Super Late Model Racing. Names like Jeff Scofield, Joe Boyd, Anthony Campi, Chris Fontaine, Timmy Moore, Robert “Showtime” Yoho, John Jackson, Scott Holly, Mallory Harvey, Brandon Anderson, Lonny Miller, Richard Sapp Jr. and the guy that flies back and forth from Germany to race Norbert Goestl. What a great race it was tonight.
The action started early and by lap 16 we started seeing the yellow flag. Two laps after the yellow flag and the double file restart, Chris Fontaine and Jeff Scofield got together. Scofield pitted for some adjustments and when he came back onto the track he tapped his roof twice which indicates to the officials that it was his fault and Fontaine should get his spot back. This meant Scofield had to go to the rear.
That was a tall and tough order as this was one of the year’s biggest races and the showing of good sportsmanship by Jeff Schofield was appreciated by the fans and the officials with a standing ovation. The march to the front began from there and with another restart with 10 laps to go it was Scofield and Boyd running side by side for 8 laps. It would end with Joe Boyd inching out Scofield and going to Victory Circle for the well deserved win.
When interviewed Jeff Scofield had a new sponsor he was anxious to thank as he proudly announced his teaming up with Husqvarna. The top five finishers were:
1. Joe Boyd #5 2. Jeff Scofield #07 3. Anthony Campi #81 4. Robert Yoho #00 5. John Jackson #1X
The Heat race for the Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Super Late Models was won by Timmy Moore in the #41 car.
Pure Stocks. The 74 lap Richard Rowe Memorial Switch Off race was a thriller. The speed seemed to be the fastest of the year for the Pure Stock class as the aggressive driving style fit right in with the theme of the night. The 1st half of the race was for 37 laps, and then they all stopped and switched drivers and fueled up. Then the race was over on the 73rd lap with the white flag. The 74th lap was lead by Richard Rowe’s car #74 and that is when the checkered flag was waved in his honor. It was a great tribute to a great racer. The top ten finishers were:
1. Robert Crisp #2 2. Scott Dawley #74 3. Ben Kelly #57 4. Jimmie Best #67 5. Troy Thiem #18 6. David Davis #6 7. Troy Meredith #00 8. Billy Carlbert Jr. #47 9. Darrin Ellis #71 10. Andrew Moon #31
The Pure stocks also ran 3 heat races with Robert Crisp, Chelsea Lau, and Jimmie Best each winning one of the heat races. It was one great night for these Pure Stock mad men.
Rockem-Sockem Bombers. The bomber boys were at it again tonight. They just love to push and shove and share the paint. Dennis Wilson in the #4 car won the 20 lap feature race, with Jody Collins in the 32C car taking second. The two of them put on quite a show for the fans with their side by side and bumper to bumper running. Making a fantastic finish and winning third place was Anthony “The Kid” Easton in the great looking #89B car. On lap 14 Todd Jacobs in the #44 car and Tom Blakeley in the #96 car got tangled up and the #44 car had to be towed to the pits. Jody Collins won the 6 lap heat race for the Bomber class tonight.
Flyin 4’s. The Flyin 4’s had a big turn out and put on a really exciting race to watch. The top 10 finishers were
1. Randy Johnson #01 2. Jessica Ostrovskis #91 3. Dalton Baldwin #4 4. Chris Patten #13 5. Joshua Piller #11B 6. Austin Cavey #20X 7. Kyle Best #3 8. Brad Steger #2 9. Mark Jackson #53X 10. Ken Smith #11
The Flyin 4’s ran two 6 lap heat races with Ken Smith and Randy Johnson each winning a heat race.
Magic 4’s. The magic 4 class is comprised of 12 to 17 year old kids that love going fast and racing their hearts out. Tonight was Brittany Barr night as she won both the 6 lap heat race and the 20 lap feature race in her #81 car. If that was not enough she claimed ownership of the point championship for the Magic 4 class for the 2009 season. Congratulations go out to a well deserved Champion, Brittany Barr. The results for the 20 lap feature race were:
1. Brittany Barr #81 2. Dallas Troyer #01 3. Joann Danielson #38 4. Zac Campilonga #30 5. Shanna Clark #44 6. Justine Carlbert #11
Shanna Clark in the lime bug #44 rolled her car in the feature race and lost her windshield; she was ok and jumped right back into the car.
Even the officials got into the action tonight. The annual Officials Race was a wild and wooly affair with the officials running the small inside track in the Flyin 4 machines. Track owner John Sarppraicone accepted a last minute invitation to participate in the race and he won it going away. He drove the Pink Bullet #91 and passed everybody in sight. The flagman Donald Smith took second place in the #38 car. The Safety Crew leader Donnie Bathje won third place in the #20 car. It was a good race and everybody seemed to have a good time.
Join us Saturday November 28th as this will be our final race of the 2009 season. Check us out at www.desotosuperspeedway or give us a call at 941-748 3171.
