The Open Wheel Mods Are Back!

ATTENTION DRIVERS (2 Subjects):

#1.  “Statement regarding rough driving and the black flag”

When I first took over as flagman over 5 weeks ago, the #1 complaint I received from the racers was they felt like they really couldn’t race hard for fear of being black flagged. I had many calls, texts, and e-mails about this subject, and many people were concerned about the black flag being pointed at them for minor or inadvertent contact. They wanted the control of the race to be back in the racer’s hands, and not the tracks.

Well as we have all seen over the past few weeks, this obviously does not work. I have preached in the drivers meetings ever week to “race the way you want to be raced”, some of you have taken that to heart, and some of you have not. Using the black flag as a flag man is purely a judgment call, every situation is different, as much as you would like them to all be the same. Using the black flag takes the control out of the drivers hands and puts in squarely on the flag man, pit steward, and spotters. It’s no different than making a judgment call on a spin or a wreck. Some people will be happy, and some people will be unhappy, that’s the problem with Judgment calls.

Some of the things that have happened on the track over the last month have no place on any race track. Some people will never grasp the concept of respecting another driver or their car. I have tried to let you guys (and gals) work it out between yourselves, and all that managed to happen were fines, suspensions, wrecked race cars, and unhappy racers still.

So because of the events of the last few weeks, your leash has just become much, much shorter drivers. Starting this week, 8/14, the experiment comes to and end. I suggest that everyone read the general rules, and pay special attention to the “Conduct” section. There are very specific rules in that section, when you fill out your registration each year, you are acknowledging that you have read and agree to these rules. Don’t let them catch you by surprise.

#2.  “Statement regarding the MANDATORY drivers meetings”

Last week at the drivers meeting, there were between 12-17 drivers that attended. We had around 70 cars in the pits, not including the late models which had a separate meeting. Drivers meetings are a mandatory part of the evening, you know that they take place around 5:15 every race night. There are things that I talk about almost every week in the meetings that no one pays attention to, so I can only assume that you are not there or do not care.

So starting on 8/21, we will be having a roll call for 1 random class at the drivers meeting each week. If you are not in attendance, or do not send a representative to attend the meeting, you will be forced to start in the rear of the feature for that night. The only acceptable excuses for not attending would be car problems, medical emergencies, etc. And even then, you need to have someone there for roll call. This way there will be no reason anyone should say ” I didn’t know”.
