BARBERVILLE, FL- After the weather forced a postponement last month, long anticipated Weiner Nationals will come to Volusia Speedway Park this Saturday, September 18th, bringing a solid field of the fastest dachshunds in the region to sprint to the finish on the VSP frontstretch. In addition to the running of the weiner dogs, the south’s fastest half mile will welcome back the Top Gun Sprint Car Series with alcohol fueled, high horsepowered, winged madness, and pay $1000 to the winner of the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman race. The Budweiser Modifieds and the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks will round out this Saturday’s racing action.
The Top Gun Sprint Car Series brings together the top names in regional 360 sprint car racing to the fastest dirt track in the region, and with a points race that is currently locked in a dead heat, this race will mean everything toward who comes out on top in the series points championship. Danny Martin won in July when the Top Guns last challenged Volusia’s clay, but Ryan Partin and Tim George are racing for the points lead as 2010 winds down, and this race is the next best opportunity to do something about it.
Twenty-two cars took the green flag last Saturday night in the tune up for this week’s Taylor Racing Products Sportsman $1000 to win feature, but points leader Aaron Barsness was a no show at the checkered flags. Despite the failure to finish on Saturday, Barsness has a 98 point advantage on the new second place runner, Steve Shead, and 108 points on Sorrento’s Matt McGillivray. And while that margin may look safe at this point in the season, being overly conservative can sometimes put one at risk just as easily as going for the win. Barsness will be looking to get back on track and collect the big check this weekend, plus seal the deal on a season championship as well.
The Budweiser Modifieds had a week off to lick their wounds after Jeff Mathews outran a hard charging Garret Stewart the last time out. Stewart is surging after any and everything that could go wrong, went wrong for him over the course of the season. Stewart’s troubles have toughened him, and he is set to challenge Mathews or anyone else who gets in his way. Jamie Carter still has the points lead despite Mathews’ best efforts, as Carter found himself outside of the top five while Mathews was scoring a win. So Carter will be looking to protect his status while Stewart will be looking to avenge last week’s failure to keep Mathews at bay, and Mathews will be gunning for another win.
Kevin Durden won the last outing for the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks at Volusia Speedway Park back on July 24th, so the racers are ready to race the rust off this Saturday night and maybe shake up the points battle a little. Philip Brown is maintaining his points lead over Tim Hughes by 71, but a bad night could put a serious dent in that pad should bad luck happen to come his way. But Brown has been getting plenty of seat time by racing with the Amsoil Thunder Stocks, so he will be more than ready to turn it loose this Saturday night.
Volusia Speedway Park will welcome the fans into the grandstand gate this Saturday at 5:30PM with heat races scheduled to go green at 7:30PM. The Wiener Nationals will take place during the intermission after heat races, and dachshund owners who wish to race their pooches should contact Volusia Speedway Park for more information.
