Modifieds Back in Action – Legends & Bandoleros Hit the Track Saturday Night at Auburndale

by Dave Westerman

Auburndale Speedway hosts its third Saturday night of racing for the 2010 season with the Legend Cars and Bandoleros getting their first laps of the year while the Open Wheel Modifieds do battle for the second time in three weeks.

Bobby Blake was in the right place at the right time in the OWM feature two weeks ago, running third when the lead pair tangled giving him an advantage he wouldn’t let go of as he led Harold “Boom Boom” Cannon and David Grogan to the stripe.  The win was especially sweet for Blake who just recently had a new addition to his family.  Fifteen cars showed up in the Modified class on opening night and even more are expected this week.

After getting a bit of a “rest period” following the February
Winternationals in Orlando, The Legend Cars and Bandoleros will be out for their first action of the year this week.

Several new faces are expected in both classes.  Bandolero drivers Danielle Stratton and Coty Bibeau are moving up to the Legends class and several other new drivers are expected as well to challenge 2009 champion Justin Brown.
As usual the Mini Stocks have supplied plenty of cars and plenty of action the first two weeks.  Last weeks winner Chris Spring has a slim two point lead over Chris Narramore, Sr., the winner on opening night, in the current standings.

Jeff Waterman has parlayed an opening night third place finish with his win last week into the current point lead in the Street Stock division while Josh Borem leads the V-8 Bomber points after scoring back-to-back wins to open the year.  Last weeks Scrambler winner Matt Johns leads the point battle in that class by 12 over Brian Tyre going into week three.  All three classes see action again this week.

Grandstand gates open at 5PM with racing promtly at 7PM.  During
intermission, drivers will be passing through the stands with their helmets in an effort to raise some funds for Jack Smith, long-time Florida racing writer and proprietor of the Karnac.com web site which hosts the Florida Stock Car Racing web pages.  Smith has been battling severe back problems which led to a tumor being discovered in his back.  Smith’s family is still awaiting word if the tumor is actually cancerous but he is now home and healing from the surgery but he will be out of commission for quite a spell.

Track officials have announced a special “fan-friendly” practice night on March 19th, the night before the F.A.S.T Late Model race on March 20th.  All fans are welcome to come into the pits to watch practice and hobnob with the drivers and teams on Friday night.  Admission to the pit area will be $15 and includes a free Bar-b-cue sponsored by Sonny’s, plenty of beer and a live country band.  Fans can then hold on to their Friday night pit ticket and get $5 off their grandstand admission on Saturday night.

Practice Time At Ocala This Weeke

by BJ Cavin

Ocala Speedway owner Michael Peters has always tried to schedule at least two practice sessions at the track during the month before the season opener, but so far in 2010 Mike is one for four against Mother Nature.  One practice was held without a hitch as many racers saw ample track time, but two other attempts have resulted in chilly rain outs, meaning that anyone who could not make it to the one session that was held was simply out of luck.

With the season opener this Friday night, Peters is still concerned that some racers never got a chance to test and tune while others did, so he has added another open practice session this Saturday as a last chance to get some practice laps in.  The pit gate will open at noon and the practice will feature track sessions by division from 1PM until 4PM.  Admission will be $15 per person with kids 12 and under admitted free of charge.  And yes, the weather forecast is favorable.

Fans are reminded that the Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series will open the 2010 racing season on Friday night before the Saturday practice, with the top names in dirt late model racing in attendance.  Ocala Speedway’s Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks and Mini Stocks will also be in competition on Friday night.  Gates open at 5PM with qualifying to follow, and heat racing is set to begin at 8PM.

For a complete schedule of events at Ocala Speedway, plus a complete listing of admission prices, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com, or call the track at 352-622-9400 for additional information.

Hendry County Makes Changes for the Better

by Bill Green

CLEWISTON, Fla. — Hendry County Motorsports Park has had two moderately successful weekends to kickoff the 2010 season, but realizes that changes to the schedule as well as the facilities must be made for the betterment of the local racing community, as well as the high profile traveling series it expects to draw in the future.

“The USAC Wingless Sprints and the 360 Winged Sprints, both put on great shows, but I believe we are trying way to hard, to early,” stated track owner Ken Kenny. “I need to build the local racing classes to help in the long term future, while allowing for some short term goals in up dating the facility.”

The current March 2010 schedule will be changed slightly, by removing the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series (Southern Division) 50-Laps event scheduled for March-13, but adding the Sportsman Class for the evening. HCMP will also keep the March-27 schedule as is, with the intent of adding a 4-Cyl Bomber Class in the near future.

Also, PLEASE say a prayer for our good friend Jack Smith, as he has been battling through serious back surgery issues over the last two weeks. The Front Page of the HCMP web site will be up dated as soon as possible when Jack is able. Other wise you will need to remind your friends and fellow racers, as well as fans of HCMP to sign up for E-Mail News Up Dates like this to help get the word out in the short term.

Thank You For Your Support!

March 13 — Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Street Stocks and HCMP Mini Stocks.

March 27 — Open Wheel Modifieds, Modified Mini Stocks, Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Street Stocks and HCMP Mini Stocks.

World of Outlaws Wrap-Up: Las Vegas Super Sprint Classic

Concord, NC-February 28, 2010-

Making some history:

“It was a great race track tonight,”said Meyers after his win on Friday night. “It was nice and wide with two lanes. I tell these guys that all the time, that if you build us race tracks like that you’ll see a heck of a race. They did that tonight and it was a great race.”

Another podium finish:

“We’ve been pretty fast,” said Kinser after his runner-up finish on Friday night. “We’ve been in the Top-Three every night, so I can’t complain, but you hate to give a race away.”

Three races, three Top-10s:

“We were happy to come in here and get a Top-Five,”shared Sides. “We qualified third and wanted to be in the Top-Three. We wanted to win it and you always want to win, but we’ll take it and go from here.”

Carrying momentum to his home state:

2010 World of Outlaws Championship Standings through February 26

The number of “Followers” keeping up with the World of Outlaws via Twitter online and through text messages on cell phones continues to grow and recently surpassed the 2,700 “Follower” mark. Updates are provided throughout race nights beginning with hot laps and continuing all the way through the final checkered flag of the night. To sign-up visit: The World of Outlaws head to California for the first of two visits to the Golden State this season with a two night event at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare on Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6. Sid Blandford, the 1994 World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner, competed at Las Vegas on Friday night, making his first appearance at the track since 1997. The Colorado native competed with the World of Outlaws last season at Clay County Fair Speedway in Iowa.Austen Wheatley from Washington qualified for his first World of Outlaws A-Feature event of his career on Friday night. The 17-year old made his debut with the World of Outlaws last season at 34 Raceway in Iowa ending his night in the B-Main in that event.Australian Sprint Car legend Garry Rush was in attendance on Friday night at Las Vegas, as a guest of four-time and defending series champion Donny Schatz, who drives for him during the off-season Down Under. Schatz has won 31 times in Australia driving for Rush since 2004. The North Dakota native has won five of his eight $50,000 Scott Darley Memorial races at Parramatta City Raceway aboard a Rush-owned machine. Rush competed in a couple of World of Outlaws events during the series inaugural 1978 season. He scored a career-best third-place finish with the series in 1979 at the Topeka Fairgrounds in Kansas. After winning a heat race each of the first two nights of the season in Florida, Sam Hafertepe Jr. made it three-for-three on Friday night as he was victorious in the second heat race to earn a spot in the dash. He wrapped up the night with a very solid eighth-place performance to score his best career finish at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Joey Saldana also remained undefeated in heat races in 2010 as he was victorious in the third heat on Friday night. Saldana wound up the night sixth and has finished sixth or better in all three races this season and is currently third in points.Tim Kaeding finished fifth on Friday night to score the best finish of his career at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The California native has finished in the Top-Five in two consecutive races and heads back home next weekend a very solid sixth in the World of Outlaws championship standings.Jason Sides continues his strong start to the 2010 season on Friday coming home fourth in the Las Vegas Super Sprint Classic. After two Top-10 performances at Volusia, Sides is one of just five drivers that have finished in the Top-10 in each of the three races this season. After opening the season by turning the fastest lap in time trials both nights in Florida, Sides was third fastest at Las Vegas. He is currently fifth in points.Steve Kinser finished on the podium for the third time in the same number of races this season. He is the only driver that has finished third or better in all three events in 2010. He opened the season with a third-place run at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida and followed that up with a win at the half-mile. The 20-time series champion finished second on Friday night after a thrilling last lap battle with Jason Meyers that nearly saw him pick up the win. Coupled with being second fastest in time trials, which earned him four bonus points, Kinser moved into the top spot in the World of Outlaws championship standings by two markers over his Tony Stewart Racing teammate Donny Schatz. The victory for Jason Meyers from the 18th starting spot on Friday night in the Second Annual Super Sprint Classic at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway set a new track record, as it marked the farthest back any winner had started from in a World of Outlaws event at the track. Jeff Swindell had previously held the record, coming from the 17th position on the grid to win at the half-mile in 1997. Meyers was able to use both the top and bottom of the half-mile as he steadily worked his way to the front. The California native was in the Top-10 by just the 11th lap of the 30-lap contest and found his way into the Top-Five just six laps later, and wound up taking the lead with three laps remaining.http://twitter.com/worldofoutlaws and receive live race updates, anywhere, anytime.

Marks Makes History at PBIR: Wins Rain-Shortened Tire Kingdom 150

marksvlpbir10.jpgJUPITER FL (2-27-10) – Justin Marks made ARCA history Saturday afternoon, winning the rain-shortened Tire Kingdom 150 presented by ModSpace at Palm Beach International Raceway.Marks, in the Construct Corps Dodge for Win-Tron Racing, earned his first career ARCA Racing Series victory utilizing rain tires provided by Hoosier Racing Tire, the first time ARCA has used a “wet” tire compound in its 58 year history.

Robb Brent finished second, after a pit road infraction caused him to bring his #36 JAM Dodge back down pit road on lap 24 after a tire got away from the team on pit road. For Brent, the runner-up finish was a career best.

Rookie Blake Koch, in his first career ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX And Menards start, finished third in the #6 ESR Racing Toyota.

Series officials were forced to throw the checkered flag on the event five laps short of its original distance, complete 70 of the advertised 75 laps, due to heavy rain. The 2.034 mile PBIR course was the victim of rain showers on and off throughout the afternoon, which lead to most teams changing from the Hoosier Short Track Radial “Slick” tire to the grooved “rain tires during the second caution period on lap 22.

Racing 2 Cure set to Debut at 69th Annual Bike Week;

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Daytona Beach, FL — Racing 2 Cure (R2C) will make its official public debut February 26th through March 7th at the 69th Annual Bike Weeks in Daytona Beach, Florida.  R2C’s founder, 10-year old Hunter Stewart will be in attendance to help raise awareness and funding for the unique non-profit organization.   The interactive Mobile R2C display will be located on Beach Street near the Harley Davidson Corporate area.   Visitors can challenge the Hunter’s score in a race simulator and win prizes.  They will be providing t-shirts and other items for donations.  In addition, visitors of the booth can enter their “Helmets for HELP” raffle program.  R2C will have several Autographed helmets from top NASCAR Drivers and other celebrities.

R2C began as a small action from a then 7-year old Hunter Stewart after learning his Mom [Alycia-34] had Breast Cancer.  As a young off-road racer Hunter took a bucket to the race track and began collecting donations from fans and fellow competitors.  His story grew and eventually landed him as a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres show along with being named a Forbes.com top ten most inspirational people under the age of 18.  Today the Stewart family has formalized Racing 2 Cure as a non-profit organization that focuses on support of what they call the “little” things families need while going through cancer.

“When I was going through Chemo Therapy treatments I was absent from the home mentally and physically.  My kids were basically without a mother,” said Alycia Stewart, who has since dedicated her life’s work to Racing 2 Cure.  “We had family and friends to help out with the little things like doing laundry, making meals, and providing the kids help with schoolwork.  But I’ve met other people going through Cancer that are not as fortunate.  They don’t have anyone to help.  Research is of course important.  We hope that one day we won’t be needed.  But until then we want to help ease the tremendous burden that Cancer brings to a home.”

In partnership with the Susan G. Komen foundation R2C raises funding to provide transportation, meals, tutors for children, house cleaning and general support to single mothers and young children.

“We are excited to have Racing 2 Cure as part of this year’s Bike Week’s festivities,” said Shelly Rossmeyer Pepe, General Manager at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley Davidson.  It further showcases the character of those who attend Bike Week and only adds to the many charity rides and charitable focuses that will take place during the event.”

About Racing 2 Cure (R2C): Racing 2 Cure began as a simple act of then 7-year old Hunter Stewart.  Hunter was starting his off-road racing career when he received troubling news just a few weeks before his first ever race.  His Mom at just 34 years old was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  In order to maintain a positive focus, the family decided to continue Hunter’s racing.  Inspired to take action Hunter began to donate a portion of his allowance for every race lap he completed.  He also re-designed his race truck to carry the Susan G. Komen logo.  This one-race effort inspired others to take action.  Hunter’s story was largely covered by the media and recognized by public officials, including a guest appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.  The Stewart family formalized Racing 2 Cure into a 501c3 Non-Profit organization registered in the State of North Carolina.  Through their interactive mobile event display R2C raises funding to provide for families in need which are going through cancer.  In addition funds support awareness and research efforts of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

About The 69th annual Bike Week in Daytona Beach: Kicking off February 26th and roaring through March 7th on Beach Street in Daytona with national bike builders like V-Force, Irish Choppers and Big Dog motorcycles occupying space in Riverfront Park.  Come join Bruce Rossmeyer Harley Davidson in welcoming The Harley Davidson corporate company to Beach Street, who will be occupying over 40,000 square feet of biker hot space, showcasing custom bikes, poker runs, collectibles and other interactive displays. The 69th annual Bike Week on Beach Street in Daytona will be the highlight of this year’s event with interactive displays, free bike parking, bands throughout the week.
