Late Models Highlight Friday’s Action at Ocala

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  Ocala Speedway will return to action this Friday night with four divisions challenging the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast.  Ocala’s Late Model Division will be back, as will the Amsoil Synthetics V8 thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.

Mark Whitener has a solid grip on the points lead as the Late Models return this Friday, but Ivedent Lloyd lurks just 21 points back, and from there back the standings become extremely close.  The 2009 Late Model champion, J.O. Nobles, is just 3 points shy of second place, and Phillip Cobb trails Nobles by a point.  Depending on who shows up and how the race plays out, anyone could be anywhere by the time racing ends on Friday night.

Scott Mooers has become the man to beat when it comes to Amsoil V8 Thunder Stock racing in central Florida with wins at both the big half mile and at Ocala.  Michael Stalnaker managed to get past him last Friday night but then failed the post race tech inspection, thus handing the win back to Mooers.  Meanwhile Willard Driggers could not repeat his big win from two weeks ago this past Friday night and is looking for some redemption, while Harold Erickson has quietly slipped into the hunt with some consistent runs as of late.  Stalnaker’s troubles on Friday leave Jerrid Bennett leading the points race despite a recent run of bad luck.

Ocala Speedway’s Mini Stocks may have turned the corner and provided some thrilling racing under the new rules package, but Nick and Dan Kerr still seem to have a firm hold on the top of the heap at present.  Last year’s champion, Paul Combast, holds the third spot behind the Kerr’s in the points, and keeps getting good finishes but few wins, while Keith Briggs could not buy a break with a million dollars and would simply like to finish a race.

Steven Johnson remains the points leader in the Gladiator Division, but the youngsters are right on his tail.  Devin Walker has a determined spirit that keeps him in the hunt, and at just 11 points out of first place he is Johnson’s “man in the mirror” at present.  And while Kody fisher remains in the third spot in the points race, he is more focused on learning to drive his new rear wheel drive race car, plus repair the damages he did to it on Friday night with two head on smacks into the wall.

Ocala Speedway will fling open the grandstand gates at 5PM on Friday, and racing will be underway at 8PM with the first heat races.  For more information, be sure to visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com, or phone the track at 352-622-9400.

Teens Admitted Free This Saturday at Volusia Speedway Park

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  Volusia Speedway Park is back in action again this Saturday night, and putting the focus on our younger races fans.  Saturday has been designated as Teen Night at VSP with all persons 17 and under admitted free of charge.  The teenagers will be provided with their own special sections where they can socialize with each other and enjoy the action on the track, plus there will be teen oriented giveaways, contests, and more.

After a weekend off the Budweiser Modifieds will be back on the track as Jamie Carter looks to stay ahead of Jeff “Repo Man” Mathews in the points race.  Mathews got the better of Carter in the last outing back on May 1st, narrowing Carter’s advantage to only 55 points.  Kent Corbin also had a good showing in that race, as did “The Underdog” Rob Underwood, which leaves Corbin in fourth place in the points while Underwood is currently sixth.

Aaron Barsness notched himself a Taylor Racing Products Sportsman win last Saturday night while Shaun Daugharty finished in third place.  That narrows the points gap between Barsness and Daugharty to just 10 going into this week’s race, and sets the stage for Barsness to possibly gain more ground if not take the lead.  Meanwhile, Stanton Mills has come alive as of late and is shaking things up at the top, as he finished in second place last weekend.  Mills could become a wild card in the race even though he is 345 points out of first place for the season, as the guys at the top have to deal with him as well as each other.

Joe Belkey has had some time away from Volusia Speedway Park and the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, and most of it was not his idea.  But apparently he used that time effectively because he returned on Saturday night and scored his first win of the 2010 racing season.  Meanwhile Phillip Brown hangs onto the points lead by a fingertip as Tim Hughes used a sixth place finish to draw within one point of him, and may well pass him this Saturday night.  But Brown and Hughes had better keep an eye peeled behind them while they battle in the points race, as Trevor Gamble is just 18 points shy of passing the entire top three.

Scott Mooers has dominated the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks so far in 2010, and from the look of things his 156 point lead may already be too tough to tackle.  But while Mooers dominated the race this past Saturday night, Matt Schell finally broke free of traffic and was chasing him down when he ran out of laps, so Mooers may not be as ironclad as some may think.  Another threat at the top could be Austin Kirkpatrick, who has put himself into position to do damage but then gets hobbled by breakdowns and bad luck.  Kirkpatrick ran well on Saturday night after yet another mechanical failure during his heat race put him deep in the field for the feature, and yet he managed a third place finish and was gaining on Schell and Mooers.

Shawn “Beavis” Kosier got to enjoy some time at the top of the 4 Cylinder Challengers before his luck changed, then it was Casey Feaster who enjoyed some time in Victory Lane.  Meanwhile Tony Laporta has been all but absent from the races as he has fought his way through mechanical issues, but he made quite a return last Saturday night by racing to a win and celebrating in Victory Lane.  Kosier’s luck may have changed a bit, but he still hangs onto the top spot in the points race with R.J. Glaser just 49 points back.  Glaser’s luck has not gone much better than Kosier’s as he was swallowed up in someone else’s mistakes last weekend.  Glaser needs a win, Kosier needs for his luck to change, and Casey Feaster just wants his car to stop failing him before the race ever begins, thus putting him behind everyone else.

Teen Night at Volusia Speedway Park will begin when the gates open at 5:30PM, and heat racing will begin at 7:30.  For more information on events, prices, or directions to the fastest half mile in the south, please visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net

MOD SQUAD TACKLES NEW TRACK CONFIGURATION SATURDAY NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Drivers and fans alike have something different to look forward to this Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. As of Tuesday night crews finished installing four feet of tapered concrete to the bottom of the turns in hopes this will encourage more two-wide racing, especially in classes like the Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds and Auburndale Trucks.

As of Wednesday, all that remains to be done is to smooth out the dirt areas on the lower portion of the turns. There are no more “rumble strips” that drivers complained about for several years.

The first of the “big dog” classes to try the new layout will be the Open Wheel Modifieds. They will be joined by the Sportsman, Mini Cups, Legend Cars, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Kids Club and Bandoleros. (more…)
