SCHOOL BUS FIGURE 8’s SET TO ENTERTAIN THIS WEEK AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Auburndale Speedway kicks off a busy month of June with seven classes doing battle including the always popular School Bus Figure 8’s. The Modified Mini Stocks return to action and will be joined by the rough-and-tumble Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Scramblers and the Kids Club.

Scotty Sharpe contiues to head the Modified Mini Stock point standings by 36 over Jason Rendell while Rendell holds a 16 point edge over third place Mike Sweet. Lee Davis, who won here last month before sitting out the last race, blew an engine in his new car at Orlando last week and backed it into the wall. Davis may or may not have his mount repaired in time for this Saturday.

Another Mod Mini hot shoe who has been on the sidelines is Burt Morse although he is expected to return this week to try for his third win of the year.

The Street Stock point chase got a little closer once again last week as Matt McCrary has now closed back to within just two markers of leader Jeff Waterman. Dave Colpritt was a no-show last week but is still third in points, now 58 behind McCrary. With his win last week, James Wright III has closed to within just 24 points of Colpritt.

Scrambler points are really getting tight too as Kim Gullett has seen her lead shrink to just two over Bryan Tyre. Chad Cutting has his new Dodge Omni running faster and is third in the Scrambler point chase, 46 points behind Tyre.

Chris Spring has been on a tear lately in the Mini Stocks but Fred Harrison, Jr. continues to stay close just 14 points behind. Chris Narramore, Sr. is now 50 points behind Harrison and it looks like it will be these three deciding the 2010 Mini Stock championship now that Donnie Guy has “retired.” Guy still holds down fourth in points while rookie contender Jason Swilley has moved into fifth although it will take the youngster some time to catch Guy. Swilley will be sponsoring 20 free ice cream prizes this week as part of “Lindsey’s Little Racers.”

One class that is a complete runaway right now is V-8 Bombers. Josh Borem has made every race and now holds a 158 point edge over Buddy Phillips, Jr.

who was absent from action again last week. Third place Paul Bookmiller has moved up to the Street Stocks giving Borem even more breathing room.

NOTES:

Whover said the weather affects the crowd needed to be at Auburndale Speedway last week. Rain storms literally surrounded the track all day, some producing heavy downpours. The track itself received several showers throughout the day but not enough to cause any problems. By race time the skies had cleared, the moon came out and the temperature dropped to the lower

70s making it a fantastic night for racing which was witnessed by a big crowd of very enthusiastic fans.

“Lindsey’s Little Racers” again will be giving a pair of bicycles to a couple of lucky kids this week along with a couple of nice prize packages donated by Peebles Bar-B-Que which will include free dinner certificates. Money to purchase the bikes is raised each week through a special raffle and this week one of the prizes will be a pair of tickets to the Daytona 500 Experience, including the track tour, courtesy Daytona International Speedway.

June will be a busy month for Auburndale Speedway. June 12th sees the Auburndale Trucks back in action, then the Late Models go at it again on June

19th for 100 laps and $3,000 to win. The month wraps up on June 26th with the return of the Open Wheel Modifieds.

Track photographer Chuck Green (CG Photography of Largo) continues to put together some fantastic products for the drivers including montages, film strips and other unique photo items. Unlike many tracks where the photographer caters only to the drivers, Chuck has his area set up on the grandstand side (with his wife in charge) so that the fans can get pictures of their favorite drivers. Items like refrigerator magnets, desktop frame photos, and key chains are among the items they have each week and they will do special orders too.

Modified Mania Strikes Volusia Speedway Park

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  This Saturday night, June 5th, Volusia Speedway Park will play host to “Modified Mayhem” as the Budweiser Modifieds turn 30 laps in pursuit of a $1200 payout to the winner.  And while the mods will highlight the evening, expect equally exciting action from the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.

Several weeks ago there were rumblings and grumblings in the grandstand that the winners’s check in the Budweiser Modified Division could be rubber stamped with Jeff Mathews’ name.  But while Mathews came out swinging and set the bar high, everyone else stepped up their game and “The Repo Man” had some rather tough outings.  And if that does not convince some fans that Jeff Mathews is human and therefore fallible, then why is Jamie Carter still sitting atop of the season points standings?

The truth of the matter is that there are many very talented Modified racers in Volusia Speedway Park’s Budweiser Modifieds, and any one of them can win on any given week.  On May 22nd it was Kyle Bronson who stepped up and won a tough race.  Larry Burkins has also shown marked improvement, as has Wayne Hammond and Garrett Stewart.  and with the $1200 cash carrot dangling in front of all of them this Saturday night for Budweiser Modified Mayhem, the likelihood of fireworks increases.

And while the Modifieds are going for the big bucks this week, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division is back after Stanton Mills collected the big check last Saturday night.  Mills may have won that time around, but Aaron Barsness was door to door with him for most of the race, with Danny Vogel in position to pounce on either one if they made the slightest mistake.  Barsness still maintains the season points lead over Shaun Daugharty by 31, as Daugharty has slipped out of the top three the last couple of times out.  But never count Shaun Daugharty out, as he was coming fast at the end of last weeks race, and gained 5 positions in a tough field to finish in fourth place.

“Shady” Grady Christian reappeared with the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks at Volusia Speedway Park last Saturday night and promptly announced his return with a victory celebration.  Phillip Brown probably would have just assumed that Grady sit out one more week as he finished second, but Brown remains the points leader over Tim Hughes by 21, with Trevor Gamble lurking at 77 points out of the top spot.  Grady’s nephew, Bubba Christian, was also back and netted a third place finish last weekend, while Mike Eubanks rolled onto the track in a brand new race car that began with huge handling issues, but improved dramatically by night’s end.  If Eubanks has found the handle on the new ride he might be poised to surprise a few folks this time out.

The undisputed ruler of the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks WAS Scott Mooers until an upstart Chad Scranton topped him last Saturday night to a standing ovation from the fans.  But win or lose, Mooers has an 188 point lead on Luke Sadler so far this season, and while Mooers was the first runner up Sadler was in the infield with a broken race car, so no damage done.  And besides, Mooers will have to lose a lot more races for anyone to have a good chance of catching him, and that is not very likely.  And yet there are some very good racers who are working on evening the weekly score, even if the season standings might be out of reach.  Tom Hughes and David Whitt are both getting stronger every weekend, and may be close to making Mooers feel a little less secure at the top.

Ever since Tony Laporta put his mechanical issues behind him and returned to the Challenger Division on Saturday nights, everyone else has been reduced to playing second fiddle.  Shawn Kosier did his major damage early in the season with some impressive wins, and he still tops the points rankings.  But Kosier’s heir to Victory Lane, Casey Feaster, has moved into second place in the points race and continues to narrow the margin between himself and Kosier, no matter if Tony Laporta wins or not.  Kosier’s recent races have seen him struggle with a variety of issues, and yet he recovers well and salvages top 10 finishes.  Casey Feaster has also struggled, but grabbed a much needed third place showing last Saturday night, while Harold Lewis was second to Tony Laporta.

Volusia Speedway Park will throw open the gates at 5:30PM this Saturday with racing beginning at 7:30PM.  For directions to the track, information on prices or the rest of the 2010 schedule, please visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.

Green Mamba highlights Citrus Events Saturday Night

Probably the most widely known jet car of all time would have to be the Green Mamba. Designed, built, driven, owned and just about anything else you can think of by Doug Rose.

Doug started out with the famous Arfon’s family. Doug drove one of the Green Monsters for them. After a crash that Doug lost his legs in, He came back and designed and built the Mamba.

The Green Mamba has been running all over the USA since the mid sixty’s. Today, Doug takes the Green Mamba out to the circle tracks and does his shows and car burns.  Currently based out of Florida, The Green Mamba and Doug are definitely worth the trip to see him in action.

The GREEN MAMBA Jet Car will be at Citrus Speedway tomorrow night (5/29/10).
Along with:
A 50 Lap Pure Stock Race,
The 4-Cyl Figure-8s,
A Fun Suitcase Race,
An exciting SCHOOL BUS Figure-8s,
and a special 4-CYL ENDURO Race.

This will be a great night for everyone. And the kids will remember the Jet car for a long time. So be sure to bring the ENTIRE family for a fun night at the races.

 NOTE:
Practice next week has changed from Thursday to Friday night.

Attention Late Model drivers:

After careful consideration, we have decided to modify the current LM rules as such:

1. There will be no restrictors mandated for the super late model motors. Spec, steel head, and 9:1 motors.

2. 9:1 motors will now weigh the same 2800lbs as the spec and steel head motors.

3. Crate motor cars will now weigh 2650lbs instead of 2700lbs.

These rules will be in effect for our local 50 lap late model shows. The FAST LM race on 8/7/10 will still be run under the FAST series rules. Any tech questions may be directed to Travis Nichols at 352-585-3560. For any other questions please call John Chance at 352-201-8257.

Practice will be Friday night with free overnight camping if needed.

Come out and have some fun!

Ocala Kicks Off Memorial Weekend with Four Divisions

OCALA, FL- A long Memorial Day weekend awaits central Florida race fans and Ocala Speedway will kick it off on Friday night with four exciting divisions. The Colortyme Modifieds will headline the show, and the Sportsman Division will be back in action. Fans can also expect action packed racing from the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, and also the fast and furious Gladiator cars.

Things remain tight at the top with the Colortyme Modifieds as 16 racers are within striking distance of points leader Jeff Mathews. Roger Crouse is just 6 points back, while Wayne Hammond and Kyle Bronson are just 9 and 10 points short of the lead spot respectively. Wayne Hammond got the win the last time out as Mathews followed for second place and Roger Crouse was third. And while Mathews leads the points standings at Ocala Speedway, he is currently ranked 6th in the DIRTcar UMP National Modified rankings.

While the Sportsman Division at Ocala Speedway came to be at the request of many racers, the division has suffered through some tough outings so far in 2010. Kevin Mills currently holds onto the points lead, but “Big Frog” Augie Burttram is only two points shy of knocking him down a notch, while Tim Powers and Shane Nichols both lurk within 6 points of Mills. The last outing for the Sportsman cars at Ocala was a brutal non points, $1000 to win, affair that was won by Alex Boerner. Mills did not fare very well in that race, but Phillip Cobb was second while Shane Nichols posted a fourth place finish.

Dean Jarvis has the points lead in the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stock Division but Heath Walker is right on his tail and only 4 points shy of overtaking him. And that is how it looked in the last outing at Ocala Speedway, as Jarvis and Walker battled almost the entire race before Jarvis managed to win. Jonathan Appleby holds onto the third spot in the points race at 27 points in back of Jarvis. And a look at the DIRTcar UMP National Stock Car standings shows three local racers in the top 20. Bubba Christian holds the 9th place nationally, while “The Outlaw” Jody Wells sits in the 14th spot, and Mike Eubanks is ranked 19th.

It was not that long ago that Casey Feaster seemed to have the car to beat in Ocala Speedway’s Gladiator Division, but in the last two outings Feaster has had to play second fiddle to EBD Racing’s Matt Shea, who is going for three wins in a row this Friday night. Shea is currently fourth in the 2010 points race and climbing fast, while Steven Johnson holds onto the top spot after a less than spectacular race this past Friday night. Johnson had better not feel too cozy up there in the lead role as young Devin Walker is only 11 points shy of replacing him, and picked up a third place finish last weekend behind Shea and Feaster. Casey Feaster, who is currently third in Ocala’s points standings and still searching for a solution to Matt Shea, is currently 17th in the DIRTcar UMP National Sport Compact standings.

The grandstand gates will open at 5PM this Friday night with heat races scheduled for 8PM. For more information, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com, where you can find everything from the complete rulebook to the current points standings, plus directions to the ONLY Friday night dirt track in Florida
