$1000 to Win Mods, Plus Double Points at Ocala

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  After a well deserved rest and a few weeks to allow Mother Nature to rain herself out, action returns to Ocala Speedway this Friday night as the Colortyme Modifieds hit the clay in pursuit of a $1000 first place payout.  In addition to thrilling modified competition, fans will also see tough racing from the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiator Divisions, as they compete for double points toward their respective season championships.

As Ocala race fans should know, “Repo Man” Jeff Mathews has all but run the table on the rest of the Colortyme Modifieds this season at Ocala, winning all but one race.  But as the racers go after the $1000 to win prize this Friday night, they will have an extra incentive to take Mathews down a notch as a $500 cash bounty has been placed on the “Repo Man” for this race.  Ocala Speedway owner Mike Peters will personally pay the racer who beats Mathews a $500 bonus, which could potentially make this a $1500 night for all but one top mod driver.

One might expect Mathews to control the 2010 points race and he does, but not to the extent that one might guess.  Wayne Hammond and Kyle Bronson are a mere 45 and 46 points shy of knocking Matthews out of first place, and both are more than capable of beating him on any given race night.  Add the bounty plus the oversized first place payout, and Matthews’ points lead could erode a little this weekend.

The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks have been a rough and tumble bunch this season, with some races looking more like an enduro than Friday night divisional competition.  Michael Stalnaker tops the survivors’ list at present as he has overcome multiple problems on his way to regaining the points lead.  Jerrid Bennett may not be in Victory Lane every Friday night, but pure persistence and determination have him just 31 points shy of Stalnaker, and no doubt salivating over the double points night to come.  Stalnaker hopes that he has eliminated the gremlins that have burdened the 8 car through the meat of the season, but if one or two are still lurking, Bennett will be poised to take advantage of it.

Defending 2009 Mini Stock Champion Paul Combast holds the points lead as the last Mini Stock Division on dirt hits the clay this Friday night, but Combast is by no means safe from the two pronged attack of Dan and Nick Kerr as they chase him up the points ladder.  With double points on the line, Dan Kerr is 21 points out of first place, while Nick follows at 30 points behind Dan, or 51 points out of first.  But the last outing for the Mini Stocks saw “Hot Shot” Keith Briggs sporting the swagger and skills that earned him the 2008 Mini Stock Championship, and so far Combast and the Kerr’s have not found the solution to staying in front of the 19T X-Treme Racing machine.

If there has ever been a tight points race in any division at Florida’s oldest speedway, Ocala’s Gladiator Division has had it in 2010.  The current points leader is none other than Devin Walker, who assumed the top spot after off the track problems bumped Casey Feaster out of first place.  Walker’s lead is barely a toe hold on the top shelf, as EBD Racing’s Matt Shea is just 4 points behind, and Steve Johnson, who led the points race for weeks before falling victim to all sorts of calamities, is 33 out of the top spot.  Throw double points in front of these racers and it becomes a nessesity for all of them to win this week, although only one can.  That means tough competition, exciting racing, and who knows who coming out on top.

Ocala Speedway will throw open the pit gate at 2PM this Friday, with the grandstands open to the fans at 5PM.  Hot laps are scheduled for 7PM with the first heat race taking the green flag at 8PM.  For more info on America’s Dirt Track, and to see the remainder of the 2010 racing schedule, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

Racing Legends Join Five Flags and Mobile International Speedway Sprint Car Events

Fans will be in for an added  treat at the upcoming Tampa Bay Auto Racing Sprint Car races at Pensacola’s Five Flags Speedway and Mobile (Al) International Speedway on Friday and Saturday, August 27 & 28.  the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Iowa, in conjunction with the tracks, is presenting the “Supermodified Racer’s Reunion” at the high-banked half mile speed plants along with the GO 15 ground-pounding, fire breathing sprint cars.
The supermodifieds, which were the forerunners of the sprint cars,  were the premier attraction at the tracks two of the five nights they ran weekly in the Deep South during the ’60s under the Speedway Incorporated banner. Most of the open-wheeled cars were home-built and featured wings and unlimited fuel-injected engines. They were replaced locally by the then less-expensive late model stock cars which became the premier class.
Fans will be able to see some of the cars up close and have the opportunity to get autographs from some of the legendary drivers and builders on hand at the sprint car races. Among those who plan to attend are: Ellis Palasini who was the Speedway Inc. champion in 1966 and won many races in the south. Bobby Ward, known in racing circles as the “Arkansas Traveler”, whose  wins all over the country include three victories in the  Southwest Supermodified Championship in Amarillo. Texas. The race was regarded by many as the national championship for the class.
Freddy Fryar who is best known locally as a top-notch stock car driver. Freddy drove many modified races in the south. Buddy Bielarski from Mobile was a driver and builder raised in the sport as his father promoted races at Pensacola and other venues in the area. Buddy’s nephew is NASCAR truck racer, Rick Crawford. Bill Hite was at the tip of the spear in building the radical rear-engined race cars and he was widely respected and orders came for his  innovative machines from every corner of  America.  he was also crew chief at the Indianapolis 500. Driver Hugh Richards, who was reported to have set a world record at Five Flags in 1972 will also be on hand.

Ellis Palasini will have his big-block Chevrolet powered #V8 supermodified on the track. The car was nicknamed “The Black Widow” and the mild-mannered Mississippi cotton farmer raced under the”Man in Black” moniker. Palasini’s “win it or wear it” styleis well -remembered by many of the area’s fans.  Bobby Ward will also get on the racing surface with the supermodified #44 which was driven by Ival Cooper. The car set a world record  at Jackson (MS) Intl. Speedway in 1970 and with its nickel-plated frame and cage, is considered one of the prettiest race cars around. The car was later campaigned successfully on dirt by the incomparable Tommy Noblin. Both cars will be used as pace cars in the events

OPEN WHEEL MODIFIEDS AND CHAMP KARTS HIGHLIGHT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY SHOW THIS SATURDAY

1,000 FANS IN THE STANDS AND A LAPTOP COMPUTER COULD BE YOURS!

by Dave Westerman

After a week off to give nearly 100 kart racers the opportunity to put on a three day show, stock car racing returns to Auburndale Speedway Saturday night and there will be some kart racing too as the Southeast Champ Kart Series makes their fourth appearance of the year as part of a nine division racing program.

The Open Wheel Modifieds are back this week along with the Modified Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, Legend Cars, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Scramblers and Bandoleros.

James Wright III has opened up a big 98 point advantage following his win in the Open Wheel Modifieds two weeks ago. Bobby Blake holds second in points but is just one marker ahead of third place Wayne Morris. Wright, the 2009 Auburndale Street Stock champion, is looking to add an OWM title to his Auburndale resume.

The Modified Mini Stock point championship for 2010 is a three man race with Scotty Sharpe currently up by 12 points on Jason Rendell. Rendell has a ten point edge on third place Mike Sweet. Meanwhile, the Mini Stock battle is a bit closer as Chris Spring leads Fred Harrison, Jr. by just 22 headed into this weeks action.

In the Street Stocks, rookie Matt McCrary still hasn’t won a feature but his consistency has him 40 points on top of second place Jeff Waterman. Dave Colpritt remains third, 26 markers in back of Waterman.

It’s down to a battle of two youngsters for the Legend Car point crown this year. Gerald White, Jr. is now 34 points ahead of Jake Perkins with both coming off disappointing results two weeks ago. Perkins won the Florida Legends Tour event at Citrus County Speedway last week.

Josh Borem continues to sit atop the V-8 Bomber standings with a 54 point edge on Buddy Phillips, Jr. Preston Davis is third in points, but by only eight over James Wright, Jr. who picked up the win two weeks ago.

The Scrambler class continues to see Brian Tyre out front but Kimberly Gullett is only ten points behind him. Richard Brown remains third in Scrambler points, 50 markers in front of fourth place Chad Cutting.

With his win two weeks ago, Andy Metz has cut Teddy Lively’s Bandolero Outlaw point lead to 38 as the pair will ultimately vie for the season title right down to the final race.

Auburndale Speedway is looking for a crowd of 1,000 or more fans and is putting out the challenge to our “regulars” to bring some friends to the races. Starting this Saturday, the first week the grandstand fan count is

1,000 or more the track will give away a new Auburndale Speedway laptop computer recently purchased from Palm Tree Computers. Adult/senior rain checks will be used, so all fans will be eligible for the drawing on that night, no extra purchase is necessary.

Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 2PM, grandstands open at 5PM and racing begins at 7PM. Adult admission is just $12, seniors are $10, kids 5-12 are $5 and all children under four years of age are admitted free. Family packs (2 adults – 2 kids aged 5-12) are $25. All kids age 10 and under will also get an extra ticket good for “Lindsey’s Little Racers” prize drawing. Prize packs this week are donated by Precision Air and Big Ron’s Racing while free ice creams are being donated by drivers James Wright III and Fred Harrison, Jr.
