Bubba Army Sprint Nationals Return to the Sunshine State

by DICK JORDAN

BUBBA ARMY SPRINT NATIONALS RETURN TO THE SUNSHINE STATE!

Amsoil_LogoThe USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series opens the 2011 season February 16-19 at America’s Dirt Track – Ocala Speedway in Ocala, Florida. The 2nd Annual “Bubby Army Sprint Nationals” marks the debut of USAC racing at the 3/8-mile dirt oval and will be part of the grand week of racing leading up to the 2011 Daytona 500, scheduled February 20 at Daytona International Speedway.

“Florida is a great place to be in February and we are all looking forward to the 2nd Annual “Bubba Army Sprint Nationals,” says USAC President/CEO Kevin Miller. Last year’s events were extremely popular and the area obviously offers many tourist attractions and vacation destinations. We expect and encourage campers who plan to take in the entire week of activity.”

Ocala Speedway is Florida’s oldest race track and its D-shape gives it a unique quality. Drivers often relate: “If you can win a race at Ocala, you can win anywhere.”

A total of 59 USAC races have been held in the Sunshine State, dating all the way back to February of 1956 when defending Indianapolis 500 champion Bob Sweikert won a 20-lap Sprint car race at Southland Speedway in West Palm Beach.

Damion Gardner opened the 2009 series with victories at East Bay Raceway in Gibsonton, marking the first time USAC Sprint cars had raced on Florida dirt since Rich Vogler’s 1987 victory at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa.

Gardner is expected to be among top threats for the series championship in 2011, along with 2010 point leader and three-time series king Levi Jones who races for USAC Triple Crown Champion and NASCAR star Tony Stewart.

Special events throughout the four days at Ocala are scheduled for campers and families who will be attending.

More details will be released on this exciting week of racing as they become available.

Cool Weather, Hot Battles

by Jimmy Rouse- Ocala Speedway Media

The first ever Car Warz on dirt was a huge success, but it’s time for some more divisional racing. The Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series (UDLMCS) will run the first half of the Fall Nationals (Volusia Speedway Park hosts the second half) alongside Ocala’s very own Mini Stocks and Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks. Some tough racers will be out there, trying to take home another trophy.

Ocala Speedway’s Late Models have had a tight points battle all season, but “The Magic Man” Mark Whitener has pulled out to a substantial lead. J.O. Nobles isn’t going to throw in the towel, though, and will be gunning for some big gains on “The Magic Man” this week. Phillip Cobb, 3rd in Ocala’s standings, won the Powell Memorial, the last UDLMCS race at Ocala, but hasn’t had much luck since. On top of Ocala Speedway’s standings, the UDLMCS has their own standings. Mark Whitener leads that as well and he has 60 points over Keith Nosbisch, and Nosbisch is going to put as much pressure as he can on “The Magic Man.” At 100 points out of 1st is Darrell Padgett, and he’s going to make Nosbisch drive his heart out. The Late Model drivers will do all they can to win the title they are gunning for.

The Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks had a crazy night last time out, with Tim Mathieu, Brian Shea, and Vaughn Woodall all getting their first trophies at Ocala. However, the season has belonged to the driver of the 8 car, Mike Stalnaker. Stalnaker leads Chris Shea by 120 points and leads Brian Shea by 136. The Sheas will need to see some checkered flags in the coming weeks to have a shot at the title, but anything can happen at Ocala Speedway. Scott Mooers will keep the Sheas focused, due to the fact that Mooers is just 3 points behind Brian Shea. Vaughn Woodall is in a sort of ‘safe zone’ in the points as he’s 44 points behind Mooers and 42 points ahead of 6th. Every driver will be trying to win a very important race in their hunt for championship glory.

Ocala Speedway will also run the only Mini Stocks on dirt this week and the championship battle has pretty much narrowed down to two. However, when it comes to racing, nothing is certain and anything that can happen, will happen. Nick Kerr leads Dan Kerr by a mere 7 points in their hunt for a title. Buddy Pope is 130 points behind Nick Kerr, but can’t focus on just chasing as Johnny Zackery and Keith Briggs are tied for 4th, 136 off the lead. “Hot Shot” Keith Briggs has recently been showing that he could be battling for the title if he hadn’t had early season bad luck. “Hot Shot” has won 5-in-a-row and doesn’t look to stop now.

Gates open at 5PM for Fall Nationals at Ocala Speedway, with Heats scheduled to start at 8. This is a special event meaning ticket prices are different than usual. To check ticket prices or find out more information, you can call Ocala Speedway or visit www.ocalaspeedway.com.
