Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series Announces Schedule Adjustments

The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by MaxFab events for Saturday night April 20th are still on schedule. The area has had some rain overnight and throughout the day, but the weather service says the moisture should be moving out of the area overnight and should be away from the Summertown, TN., and area tomorrow.

Stay tuned to websites, twitter and Facebook for the latest updates concerning the weather for Saturday.

Pits gates will open at 3pm, registration ends at 6pm, drivers meeting at 6pm and hot laps to follow.

DAVENPORT BECOMES FIRST REPEAT WINNER AT HAGERSTOWN

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 13, 2019) – Jonathan Davenport became the first repeat winner in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned events at Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday night.

Heading into tonight’s event at the Dirt Capitol, the series had made 11 appearances and there had been 11 different winners. The defending National Champion led the entire race on his way to winning the 38th Annual Stanley Schetrompf Classic. Davenport now sits at five series wins so far in 2019, and his 41st overall.

Brandon Sheppard roared to a runner-up finish, holding off Jimmy Owens at the line. Rick Eckert was fourth and Tim McCreadie rallied from his 19th starting position to round out the top five.

“It’s really great to become the first driver to win twice in series races at Hagerstown, this is such a historic track,” said Davenport. I was getting really, really loose on that long green flag run and I got behind those lapped cars. Jimmy [Owens] and Sheppard were right on us. Thank goodness for that caution. It saved us. I haven’t raced here many times; but it definitely brings back memories of my asphalt days. You have to drive the track straighter than most. You also have to have a different mindset to drive this track. Thank you to Jason, Tyler, Matt, and everybody who works on the crew.”

A caution for Jason Jameson on lap 25 allowed lapped traffic to clear out in front of Davenport after Owens and Sheppard closed to within a car length. On the restart, Davenport pulled away and Sheppard moved around Owens for second.

“A couple of the lap-cars were giving me fits tonight. One of them kept switching lanes on me and I am not sure if he saw me because he was racing me side-by-side. I bumped wheels with him, and I thought here we go. Jack Cornett is here tonight, and he builds a great engine. Thanks to all of the fans for coming out tonight looks like they had a great turnout.”

Sheppard had his second straight runner-up finish with the series. “We were all bunched up racing for the lead and then the caution came out. JD and Owens were doing a good job and I was going to have a tough time passing them. It was a lot of fun out there. I had to run my stuff harder than I wanted to. Luckily, on the restart I slipped by Jimmy. I couldn’t gain any ground on JD. I was trying all sorts of things to catch him, but I think I burnt my tires up too much. This was a lot better than my last showing at Hagerstown for sure.”

Tonight, Owens piloted the same back-up car which got him to victory lane Atomic on Thursday and recorded another podium finish on Saturday night. “JD was really good, and he was making his way through traffic really well. I felt at the time we had gotten to him [Davenport] and we were a little better than him. We had a bird’s eye view and I thought we could sneak up on him and then the caution came out and ruined it for us. Our tires didn’t refire and it was just a drag race until we got to traffic again.”

SHARON’S LUCAS LATE MODEL RACE A WASH

HARTFORD, OHIO (April 12, 2019) – Friday night’s Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Steel Valley 50 at Sharon Speedway has been canceled. After a period of heavy afternoon rain, Sharon Speedway management officials made the decision to cancel the event. The event will not be made up. All pre-sale tickets will be refunded. The weekend swing for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series continues on Saturday at Hagerstown (MD) Speedway and Sunday at Port Royal (PA) Speedway. Hagerstown’s feature pays $12,000-to-win while a $10,000 top prize is posted for Port Royal’s A-Main.

OWENS RECOVERS FOR LUCAS OIL WIN AT ATOMIC

CHILLICOTHE, OHIO (April 11, 2019) – Jimmy Owens recovered from mechanical issues early on Thursday night to win the 5th Annual Buckeye Spring 50 at Atomic Speedway. The three-time National Champion led all 50 laps of the event for his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season.

Owens broke a fan blade in hot laps, which relegated him to his back-up car. His backup entry proved to be the best of the night as he dominated the main event. Brandon Sheppard tried to track down Owens but came home in second-place. Jonathan Davenport came home in third. Tim McCreadie finished fourth and Earl Pearson took fifth at the finish.

Owens started third and quickly darted to the lead on the opening lap with Tyler Erb following. Having won a pair of events last September at the Ohio Speed plant, Erb was looking for his third straight win at Atomic. Erb held the second spot until Sheppard got around him. A furious battle behind Owens ensued for the runner-up slot between Sheppard and several drivers, lasting several laps. Pearson went to the outside and briefly took second from Sheppard at the halfway mark. Sheppard came back a lap later to regain the position.

Owens was set on cruise control for most of the race and was rolling around the 3/8ths mile track with as much as a straightaway lead at times. A caution flag with 43 laps complete appeared to set up a dash to the finish between Owens and Sheppard, but Owens pulled away to become the seventh different winner this year on the tour.

The 47-year-old Owens was ecstatic to finally breakthrough with his first series win of 2019. “We fixed everything on the main car this week from last Saturday. We broke a fan blade in hot laps. Then we had to get our back-up car out. My hat is off to the crew for getting this car prepared. They busted their rear ends tonight. We had a quick turnaround time to get it in line just to qualify.”

“The crew gave me a good car that I could feel confident in,” Owens added. “We had second quick time in our group and then we went out and won our heat race and so here we are in Victory Lane. We have a good car, a great team, and we are just as capable as anybody to run up front night in and night out. Thanks to the fans for coming tonight to watch a good show and thanks to the track crew for a well-prepared track.”

Sheppard congratulated Owens on his win. “We had a really good race tonight. Jimmy and his crew are really rolling. It is a lot of fun running against these Lucas Oil guys. Everybody races each other clean and it was getting exciting. Thanks for all of the fans for coming out on a Thursday night. Thanks to Mark Richards and Steve Baker for giving me this opportunity.”

Davenport was seeking his fifth series win of the season. “I tried to slide Brandon there once and couldn’t quite clear him. I wanted to try again but I didn’t have him cleared enough to do so and I wasn’t going to take both of us out. We didn’t take off like we wanted to,” said the defending series champion who heads to Sharon Speedway on Friday night maintaining his points lead.

Ross Bailes Claims First-Career Lucas Oil Victory

SEYMOUR, TENN (April 5, 2019) – Ross Bailes rolled to his first-career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory on Friday night at 411 Motor Speedway. The 29-year-old, South Carolina native led all 50 laps of “Tennessee’s Action Track 50” en route to one of the biggest wins of his career. Bailes took the lead at the start of the race, withstood several cautions, and managed to hold off a late race charge from three other drivers to become the sixth different winner of the 2019 season. Donald McIntosh took second over Jimmy Owens. Current Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series point leader, Jonathan Davenport finished in fourth followed by Dale McDowell. “This seems unbelievable,” said Bailes. “We have tried for so long to win one of these and we just couldn’t get it done. To come to a new place like this and to get it done here is just unimaginable. I felt good on the bottom and then when I got to lapped traffic I was slowing down. I knew I needed to search around and do something different. My crew guys told me to move up and when I did the car felt really good up there.” Bailes added: “This place is awesome. I think if we would have run another 50 laps it would have been even better. I was happy with it. There was grip on the bottom . I didn’t have to worry about the top for the first half of the race and then it got racy all over. This win is now at the top of my list for sure. Maybe we can get another one tomorrow night at North Georgia. I want to thank Barry and Lance Wright, Ronnie McCarter and all of my crew it was a great team win that’s for sure.” McIntosh, also looking for his first career Lucas Oil win, settled for second at the line. “Our car was pretty good. I had it prepared to run the top. I was just biding my time out there. I thought I could get up to him [Bailes] and make a run for the win. I am blessed to be back at Blount Motorsports and maybe we can get that first Lucas Oil win tomorrow night at North Georgia.” “I don’t think he [Bailes] knew the top was there. “We had a great race for second with Jimmy [Owens]. I think I showed him [Bailes] the top one time and he moved up there in traffic. Racing with these guys and from where we started that’s a pretty awesome run,” said McIntosh who started sixth. Owens finished third after a late-race charge. “We have been pretty good in East Tennessee so far this year. We have had good race cars all year long. It feels good to finally finish a Lucas Oil race. Last year we had such terrible misfortune. This year seemed like it was going to start off the same way but we just aren’t going to let that happen. McIntosh had a good car, and he was up on the wheel. Over a million reasons to be part of the Super DIRTcar Series in 2019

CONCORD, NC — March 21, 2019 — 2019 is officially the year of the Big-Block Modified. The Super DIRTcar Series and its tracks are proud to present a massive $1.25 million in prize money for Series competitors throughout the year.

The record-breaking Super DIRTcar Series cash prizes are spread throughout the season — $877,000 in race purses, $123,000 in the Championship point fund, $205,000 at NAPA Super DIRT Week, and over $20,000 in contingency sponsor cash bonuses.

The crown jewel of the Super DIRTcar Series is, of course, NAPA Super DIRT Week at Oswego Speedway. The 48th action-packed autumn classic runs Wednesday to Sunday, October 8-13 2019. Sunday’s Billy Whittaker Cars 200 caps off the greatest week in DIRTcar racing with the $50,000-to-win finale. The total purse for the week, including the Friday Night Lights Triple Qualifiers, is $205,000.

There are eight NAPA Super DIRT Week Qualifiers peppered throughout the 2019 schedule, and all of them pay at least $10,000-to-win. The Series returns to Can-Am Speedway on Saturday, April 13 to kick-off the points-paying season with the Thunder in the Thousand Islands 100 $10,000-to-win lid lifter.

On Tuesday, June 25, Brett Hearn’s The Big Show XI returns to Albany-Saratoga Speedway. The 100-lap Feature pays out $11,111 to the winner along with a guaranteed start in the Billy Whittaker Cars 200. Less than a week later, the newly dubbed Plattsburgh Airborne Speedway, hosts the Series for another $10,000-to-win NAPA Super DIRT Week Qualifier on Monday, July 1.

July is the month of the money as it includes four $10,000-to-win 100-lap Features. After Plattsburgh, the Orange County Fair Speedway hosts the Battle on the Midway 100 on Thursday, July 18. Then Weedsport Speedway’s Hall of Fame 100 brings the Series to the historic track on Sunday, July 28. Finally, July’s four-crown finale is a 100-lapper on the prestigious Eldora Speedway high banks in support of the Gander Mountain NASCAR Truck Series rounds out the month.

Lebanon Valley Speedway’s annual Mr. DIRT Track USA pays $17,500 to the winner on Saturday, August 31. The final NAPA Super DIRT Week Qualifier falls takes place Saturday, September 14 at Mohawk International Raceway with the Mohawk 100. All other Super DIRTcar Series races pay out a minimum of $7,500 to the winner and at least $500 to start the race.

RAIN HALTS BUCKEYE SPRING 50 AT ATOMIC

CHILLICOTHE, OHIO (March 15, 2019) – With rain starting to fall hallway through time trials and continuing off and on throughout the night, the 5th Annual Buckeye Spring 50 at Atomic Speedway has been postponed.

Atomic Speedway and Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series officials are working to determine a suitable make-up date. Tickets and armbands from the event will be honored on the make-up date or any event during the Atomic Speedway season of equal value.

On Saturday night, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series moves to Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway for the 22nd Annual Indiana Icebreaker. Gates will open at noon, with the driver’s meeting slated for 4:30pm. The on-track action will begin with hot laps at 5:00pm.

LUCAS LATE MODELS RETURN TO ACTION MARCH 15TH-16TH

BATAVIA, OHIO (March 11, 2019) – The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action this weekend, as the nation’s elite dirt late model drivers make their annual trek to Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio and Brownstown Speedway in Brownstown, Ind.

Both events are expected to attract a powerful field of entries as drivers battle in a complete program of: Miller Welders Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and 50-lap, $12,000-to-win finale for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

Friday’s event at Atomic Speedway, the 5th Annual Buckeye Spring 50, will include a $500-to-win event for the Sport Modifieds. The pit gates will open at 3:00pm, followed by general admission gates at 4:00pm. Hot laps will begin at 6:00pm, followed by action-packed racing. Brownstown Speedway, located on the Jackson County Fairgrounds, will kick off its 2019 racing season on Saturday, March 16. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series resumes competition, following a knockout Florida-Georgia Speedweeks, averaging nearly 50 super late models per night during the eight-race stretch. Four different drivers have graced Victory Lane thus far, in 2019. Jonathan Davenport and Tyler Erb have recorded three wins each, with Earl Pearson Jr. and Hudson O’Neal each winning one main event.

Davenport, the reigning Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion, leads the current standings by just 40-points over Tyler Erb, who is competing in his first full year on the tour. Pearson is third, followed by Scott Bloomquist and Devin Moran.

Ginger Owens March Madness Will Kick Off 2019 Southern All Stars Championship Campaign

FAYETTEVILLE, TN—The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by MaxFab will start the 2019 season with a traditional opener as the series will sanction the 19th Annual Ginger Owens March Madness 60 paying $12,000 to win and $600 to start for the Southern All Star Super Late Models Sunday afternoon March 3rd. Ginger scored several races for the series over the years and lost her fight to cancer last week after a 14th month battle so Cherokee promoter Scott Childress added her name to the title as it will now be called.

The 2019 Southern All Stars Championship run will also start with this event as it has in numerous years and there will be some familiar names coming back to the series as well as drivers that have intentions on running the series in 2019. Current champion and Cruise with the Champions/Dirtondirt.com Rookie of the Year Jay Scott of Fayetteville,, TN., will be back to defend his title in 2019 as well as the second place finisher Mark Dodson of Caledonia, MS., and fifth place finisher Joseph Faulkner of Flintville, TN., all are expected to return, Four time Southern All Star champion Riley Hickman has plans on returning to the series in 2019.

New drivers that have expressed interest in a 2019 title run include from the state of Georgia, Zach Leonhardi, Andrew Littleton, J R Moseley and Kenny Collins, from Mississippi Leon Henderson and Austin Arnold, from Tennessee Christian Hanger and from Alabama J T Seawright and Billy Franklin.. Many of these drivers will be running for the rookie title as well as championship and will be their first run at a touring series title.

The race itself will be another one of the Southern All Star events that is action packed as the feature will be 60 laps, along with SUNOCO Race Fuels/Knowles Race Parts qualifying, Hoosier Racing Tires qualifying heats; PPM Racing Products B Main will all be part of the action.

Winter Freeze IX, Night Two Goes to the Second Georgian in Two Races

SYLVANIA, GA – Feb. 9, 2019 – Georgia native Shane Clanton broke a year-and-a-half winless streak by dominating the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series 50-lap Feature Saturday night at Screven Motor Speedway.

Clanton, the 2015 Series champion from Zebulon, GA, had gone 51 races without a win before earning his fourth victory at Screven and 43rd all-time in World of Outlaws competition, holding off Kyle Hardy and Chase Junghans to the checkered flag.

According to “The Georgia Bulldog” himself, going winless last season never actually bothered him as much as most fans thought it would have. In fact, he used the dry spell as fuel to get better. Now that the monkey is off of his back, Clanton will look to build on this momentum as the current points leader heading into Volusia, where he has been so dangerous in past years with five wins since 2015.

“It feels real good,” Clanton said. “To go almost a year and a half… like I said at the banquet [last year], it just makes you mad. And the guy who wins, it just makes him more determined to come back and win again, and that’s what we’ve done. We’ve worked awful hard over the winter to build a new racecar here.”

In what was almost a perfect night, Clanton qualified second overall out of 39 cars, won his heat race and redrew the pole for the Morton Buildings Feature. Taking the lead on lap 1, he faced several long strings of lapped traffic, as the race’s first caution didn’t fly until lap. But Clanton was able to handle the pressure from those behind him, much like all great veterans of the sport do.

“I guess it’s lucky to get number one but I think our car was good enough to pass a couple of cars,” Clanton said with the biggest smile on his face. “I was just biding my time, trying not to get into too much lapped traffic, just didn’t want to get myself in a bind. We rode a long way, and to come up with the win, it’s pretty special.”

And how special it was for Clanton and the Capital Chassis stable this weekend, with Chris Madden putting his Capital on the podium in Friday night’s race and a top-10 on Saturday. Clanton said Madden’s help has been and will continue to be instrumental in Capital’s success on the tour this season.

“I’ve had some help when Chris came along after Charlotte [last year] and we went and tested my car, then we built this car,” Clanton said. “We’ve changed some things on it and evidently we’re going in the right direction, so that’s the good thing.”

Another special finish came right behind Clanton – the Viper Motorsports entrant of Rookie contender Kyle Hardy. The Virginian had a solid night on Friday, coming from 17th to finish 11th after winning his Late Chance Showdown. But Saturday night was a much different story, as he set fast time in Group B, won his heat and redrew third.

Hardy made the pass for second around Jason Covert on lap 12 and chased Clanton down the rest of the way but was never able to make the pass. However, he held his own through lapped traffic, staying right with Clanton the entire way and closing a two-second gap before the lap 45 caution. Overall, a great showing by the new Barry Wright Race Cars house driver.

“It turned out to be great,” Hardy said. “We’ve got a greatly prepared car by Lance and Barry Wright, and that means the world. We ran decent last night, wasn’t the greatest, but second place tonight was, by far, great for us.”

After the 11th-place on Friday night and the runner-up finish on Saturday, Hardy now leads in Rookie points by 20 markers over Ricky Weiss, who fell back to 15th in Saturday’s Feature. This gives him a big boost of confidence, heading into Volusia for the DIRTcar Nationals.

“Absolutely, it’s a huge boost of confidence,” Hardy said with a grin. “We didn’t have two bad nights, we had a decent and a great night. We’re just super happy about it and ready to get going.”

Hardy’s previous experience at Screven played right into his favor on Saturday night, as his three prior starts seemed to give him the edge over his fellow Rookie competitors.

“It definitely helped, I’ve raced here three times before and it was the fifth time over the weekend, so it turned out to be great,” Hardy said.

In what should have been another Rookie in the top five, Cade Dillard seemed to have a great fourth-place run going before tangling with Jason Covert in turn three with just two laps remaining. Dillard was obviously disappointed by the incident and the resulting 19th-place finish, but it gave him plenty to build off of heading into Volusia next week and was a great rebound, just one night after having to fight for a 14th-place run after taking a provisional.

“I had a good car in the feature,” Dillard said. “I was just riding, trying to stay out of trouble. Had a chance there at the end, got under [Covert], I’d say nearly nose-to-nose with him. I’m not sure if he didn’t see us there or saw us and just turned left… Unfortunately, it killed our good run for us.”
