BROOKE STORER CAPS WILD NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY WITH FIRST SPORTSMAN WIN

It was just one of those nights Saturday at Auburndale Speedway. The heat races were run off in a snap allowing the fans to enjoy a nice autograph session on the track plus the kids made out like crazy as 108 Easter baskets were handed out. Things changed come feature time as some wild and wooly action took place. Fortunately the fans were headed home before it actually became Easter Sunday.

The headliner event of the night was the “Easter Bunny 50” for the Sportsman cars. Just 12 cars checked in but, as could be seen from the laps turned in qualifying, it was a quality group of machines ready to do battle.

Brandon “Bones” Duschscherer was easily on his game right away tripping the clocks at 14.270 seconds for quick time. Right behind “Bones” was Brett Jenkins who turned in a solid lap of 14.309 followed by the 14.331 lap of Roger Blevins who was wheeling “Big Daddy” Dave Colpritt’s #4. Rounding out the top five in time trials were Devin McLeod and Brandon Morris.

Being fast in qualifying proved to be a moot point as the top ten fastest were inverted for the start. Ninth and tenth qualifiers Brandon Martin and Bobby Mills elected to start scratch, though, placing eighth fast qualifier Brooke Storer on the pole for the 50-lap run flanked by Tim Alexander.

Storer sped out to a good-sized early lead while Adam Briggs charged to second with McLeod right on his tail. Coming off turn two during the second lap, McLeod made an inside move on Briggs but the two cars became locked together stopping almost instantly and scattering the field behind them. Several cars received some type of minor damage trying to avoid the altercation. Fast qualifier Deucscherer ended up turned around in turn two with some damage to the front body work of his car. It took several minutes to get the McLeod and Briggs cars apart. Both McLeod and Duchscherer pitted for quick repairs while Briggs stayed on track although all three were relegated to the rear of the field for the restart.

Brandon Morris restarted in second but soon found himself in third as Charlie Brown, who had not even qualified and started tenth, charged up to second on the fifth lap. Morris returned the favor two laps later while Duchscherer had already worked his way back up to fifth then slid by Brown for fourth on lap ten. Duchscherer continued his charge, passing Roger Blevins for third on lap 18.

Meanwhile, Storer and Morris had begun to put some distance on the field but that all changed on lap 22. Bobby Miller and A. J. Olender, who were about to be lapped, tangled going into turn three right in front of the leaders. Storer dove low but the rear of her car clipped Olender’s machine ripping the driver’s side door off. Morris chose to go high and ran out of room as he clobbered the wall avoiding Mills’ machine.

Morris’ car was towed off the speedway as he was done for the night as was Mills. The rear cover of Store’s car was torn loose but it was removed during the red flag by track crews with no penalty. Olender pitted and returned sans driver’s door. As the field re-fired, Duchscherer could not get his car in gear and he again had to head to the pits. “The car was stuck in second gear so I went in to get it checked,” said Duchscrerer. “As soon as I pulled in the pits everything freed up and was OK other than the fact I had to go to the back again,” he continued.

Storer was hitting all her marks and driving a solid race out front while all eyes were once again on Duchscherer who took fourth on lap 26, then passed Briggs for third on lap 38. Storer had things pretty much in hand at this point with Brett Jenkins in second but not able to really mount a challenge. All of a sudden it looked as if Storer’s “luck” was in jeopardy as Olender spun in turn four to bring out the caution and set up a one lap dash to the checker. That allowed Duchscherer to move right up behind Storer for the restart. But this time there would be no more hard luck for Storer as she held strong to the finish as Duchscherer and Jenkins bounced off each other several times with Duchscherer crossing the stripe in second in front of Jenkins, McLeod and Brown.

Earlier in the week Storer had posted on her Facebook page that she was thinking about stepping away from the sport after some recent disappointing finishes. However, around mid week, her team decided to get the car ready for Auburndale and now are really glad they did as everything tended to work in their favor most of the night.

Blevins came home in sixth followed by Alexander, Martin, Olender, Briggs (who spun out in turn two on the final lap), Morris and Mills.

The Modified Mini Stocks were back on the card for the second time this year and showed up in force as two heats were needed to set the feature field for the 17 cars entered. Defending track champion Chris Spring won the opening heat while Fred Harrison claimed heat race number two.

After the initial start was aborted due to a Tim Scalise spin in turn two, Harrison jumped to the point only to see the yellow flag wave at the end of lap one as Ray Miller spun in turn two with help from Mike Kerrivan who went to the rear for the restart. Just as the field was about to completed the second lap, Jimmy Frazier was spun in turn four where he was t-boned by the machine of Kelly Hahn. Despite a big dent in the driver’s side door, Frazier returned to action but Hahn’s car was done for the night. Third-running Spring then had to pit before the restart as a tire went down.

After nearly a half hour, the field finally completed the second lap with Keith Roggen forging his way to the front. The field stayed under green until the 14th lap when Scott Bumgardner went for a spin courtesy of Scalise who went to the back for the restart. Spring was charging again as he took over third on the restart just before Bumgardner and Frazier tangled in turn four with both being hit by Kerrivan’s car. Fortunately all three were able to continue.

Roggen drove off following the restart as the last ten laps clicked off under green. Roggen claimed the win in his AMF Chassis “wedge” after not even deciding to get the car ready to race until about two days before. Harrison held off Spring for second with Scalise rebounding for a nice fourth with Frazier also coming back for fifth with a car that could have been used as a preview for the next week’s “Night of Destruction.”

Sixth through tenth were Clint Holmes, Bumgardner, Jamie Dixson, Kerrivan and Rachelle Rudolph. Completing the finishers were Chris Falkner, Jimmy Wood, Dave Barnett, Ray Miller and Hahn. Dave Davis and T. J. Tanner did not start.

Roy “Bubba” Healey led all the way to capture the 25-lap V-8 Bomber feature. After a lap three altercation on the front stretch between Mike Pitts and Danny Burchfield, the race ran green to checker.

James Wright III started deep in the field but worked his way to second by the 16th lap. By that time Healey was in a different zip code as he drove to an easy victory over Wright and a resurgent Burchfield. After being relegated to the back of the field for “jumping” a restart at the beginning of the race, Eddie Hartin worked his way up to fourth at the finish ahead of fifth place Travis Roland.

Sixth was Ronnie Abney trailed by Jeff McCaw, Jamie Castleberry, Blake Smith-Jones, Jody Gill and Pitts. Aaron Holmes did not start. Heat wins went to Hartin and Burchfield.

Yet again it was a family affair in the Q Mini Stocks as heat winner Chris Narramore, Sr. led the entire 20 lap distance for his fourth win of the season over his son Chris, Jr. Bruce Cozad scored yet another third place finish followed by Duker Holley, Fred Martin, David McCaig, and Colt Cecil.

Bryton Horner scored his first-ever win by taking the checker first in the Mini Cup heat race. Horner then led the first four laps of the feature before giving way to Douglas Herrin, Jr. From that point Herrin checked out for his second win in a row. Horner and Clay Samuels got together on the final lap allowing Russell Bush to slip by for second with Samuels coming back for third ahead of Kyle Trinklein, Bill Rychel, Horner and Maria Martins.

James Wright III was the “Guest Driver of the Week” in the #42 Saturn station wagon and he led all the way to win the Scrambler feature over Danny Burchfield, Fred Wilson and Travis Todd. Kelly Hahn did not start the feature race.

The track will now take two weeks off for the “Night of Destruction” this coming Saturday and the Polk County Music Fest April 14 and 15. Stock Car racing returns on April 21 with 125 laps on tap for the Super Late Models.

Big Frog Motorsports Adds Donald Mcintosh to Driver Roster

Tripleheader Weekend Ahead for Team

Ocala, Florida (04/10/18) – Big Frog Motorsports owner Augie David Burttram is pleased to announce that he’s added Dawsonville, Georgia’s Donald McIntosh to his driver roster for the 2018 season.

The talented 25-year-old ace will make his debut this weekend – April 12-14 – in the M&W Transport #58 XR1 Rocket Chassis Super Late Model as the team competes in a trio of events in North Carolina and Tennessee. (Heath Lawson pic)

“I think it’s no big secret that Donald is one of the most-talented up-and-coming drivers out there, and it’s exciting to have him drive one of our cars in select events,” Burttram said. “He’s had some bad luck in his own equipment to start the year, and after some talks we decided that it made sense for him to enter some events for us when both his schedule and our schedule allows.

“With his experience and our equipment, I honestly believe that we can contend for some wins this weekend. I greatly appreciate all of our backers, who are making it possible.”

For McIntosh it’s a great chance to aim for some big wins at some familiar tracks.

“I’m always excited to go racing, but I’m really excited about this weekend,” McIntosh said. “These are three tracks that I know well, so hopefully I can deliver great results all three nights. I can’t thank Augie (Burttram) and his team enough for this awesome opportunity.”

The team will kick off their three-night swing on Thursday evening at Ray Cook’s TriCounty Racetrack (Brasstown, North Carolina) with a $1,500-to-win, unsanctioned event. On Friday evening the action moves to the wicked-fast Tazewell Speedway (Tazewell, Tennessee), where a $5,000 top prize will be on the line for the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series. The ultra-busy weekend draws to a close on Saturday evening at Volunteer Speedway (Bulls Gap, Tennessee) as the team battles for a $10,052 top prize in the annual Scott Sexton Memorial. The event will also be sanctioned by the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals.

Stormy Scott Soars to USMTS Win at Whynot

Stormy Scott turned his season around in a big way with a thrilling victory in the fifth round of the 9th Annual Summit USMTS Winter Speedweeks presented by MSD Performance Saturday night at the Whynot Motorsports Park.

After failing to even make it to the finish line in all four of the previous main events in this 2018 campaign, the 2-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., put it all together at the ‘House of Hook’ after a spirited tussle with Cade Dillard in the caution-free 40-lapper.

Jason Krohn stepped up to the plate from his front row start and led most of the first half of the race with Dillard breathing down his neck and Scott lingering in third. With 15 laps down, Scott went by Dillard and then powered underneath Krohn for the lead as they came to the flagstand to complete lap 18.

Forced to navigate lapped traffic the rest of the way, Scott and Dillard sped away from the field with Scott showing the way on the bottom and Dillard on the gas around the high side.

With 13 laps to go, Dillard shot by Scott down the back-stretch and led for the first time this season with 28 orbits in the books.

Scott remained faithful to the short way around the smooth 3/8-mile of red clay and reeled Dillard back in, eventually taking the lead for good with just six laps left as he won going away for his 45th career USMTS triumph and a $3,000 payday.

Dillard was a solid second while the younger of the Scott twins-Johnny-clawed his way to third after starting 13th. Thirty minutes earlier, he came from last in his Real Racing Wheels “B” Main to win that and get a spot in the main event.

Krohn held off Lucas Schott for fourth with Dereck Ramirez, Lucas Lee, Jake O’Neil, Toby Hodge and Friday night’s winner, Zack VanderBeek, rounding out the top 10.

After five events in the Summit USMTS Southern Series powered by Production Jars, Johnny Scott remains the points leader by two markers over Dillard (466 to 464), followed by Ethan Dotson (394), Rodney Sanders (366), Dereck Ramirez (360), Joe Duvall (359), Bryan Rowland (341), Carlos Ahumada Jr. (335), Logan Robertson (334) and Zane Ferrell (324).

After two events in the USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental, Dillard is on top with 187 points followed by Schott (179), Johnny Scott (178), VanderBeek (172), O’Neil (160), Ramirez (157), Stormy Scott (155), Jake Timm (147), Krohn (142) and Robertson (130).

Sunday’s event at the Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss., has been rained out, so the next event on deck is the King of America VIII presented by Summit Racing Equipment on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 15-17, at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan.

VanderBeek Collects Victory after Lee’s Setback at Jackson Motor Speedway

BYRAM, Miss. (March 9)–The meanest modifieds on the planet converged on the Jackson Motor Speedway Friday for round 4 of the 9th Annual Summit USMTS Winter Speedweeks presented by MSD Performance and a dual event with the Summit USMTS Southern Series and USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup national tour.

Sybesma Graphics Pole Award winner Stormy Scott of Las Cruces, N.M., grabbed the lead at the the start but Tennessee’s Lucas Lee used the high line around the 3/8-mile dirt oval to steal the top spot away on the fourth lap with 2016 USRA Modified national champion Lucas Schott, Arizona’s Jake O’Neil and four-time and defending USMTS national champion Jason Hughes following in their tire tracks.

The first half of the race was riddled with yellow flags. The fourth flew for Hughes on lap 10 , and he did not return to finish the last 40 laps. Two-time USMTS national champ Rodney Sanders slowed on lap 16 to bring out the fifth caution and did not return either.

Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn., pulled to the infield on lap 20, leaving no former national champs in the field. The seventh caution waved on lap 22 for Scott who has yet to complete a main event.

Meanwhile, Lee continued to pound the cushion with Schott, VanderBeek and chasing the leader around the high side until the eighth caution waved with eight laps remaining.

Under yellow, 16th-starting and fourth-running Terry Phillips left the track with a flat tire and when the green flag returned VanderBeek powered in front of Schott to control second place.

Lee and VanderBeek separated themselves from the pack and finally reached lapped traffic with 10 laps to go with Cade Dillard entering the picture when a stray bumper in turn one forced the race’s final caution with eight laps remaining.

From there, VanderBeek shadowed Lee around the race track but Lee was able to hold back the challenges and appeared destined for his career-first USMTS win, but after taking the checkered flag first he was disqualified during post-race technical inspections for an engine setback violation.

Lee’s lost glory gave the victory to VanderBeek, along with the $3,000 winner’s share of the prize money.

“We were kind of just right there with Lucas Lee but he had a pretty good car,” VanderBeek said during his delayed victory speech. “Unfortunately, there’s rules and you’ve got to follow them and it sucks, but we all have to take that plunge if we have that happen to us.”

It was VanderBeek’s 43rd career USMTS triumph, jumping him one spot ahead of Tommy Myer to sixth on the all-time wins list and one behind Stormy Scott’s 44 wins.

Schott finished with a runner-up effort and Dillard climbed from 13th to third in the contest. Johnny Scott was fourth and Jake O’Neil rounded out the top five. Sixth through tenth, respectively, were Jake Timm, Paul Niznik, Dereck Ramirez, Ethan Dotson and Logan Robertson.

Dillard captured last year’s inaugural visit to the Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Miss., where the series will return on Saturday, March 10, as the touring titans of the USMTS bring the boom to the “House of Hook” in Meridian with six racing divisions on tap.

NeSmith Crate Late Models, NeSmith Late Model Sportsmans, NeSmith Street Stocks, Factory Stocks and Hot Shots round out the program with pit gates opening at 1 p.m., grandstands open at 3, hot lap at 6 and racing at 6:30.

Adults are $20 to get in the grandstands, kids age 6-12 are $10. Pit passes are $35 for adults, $15 for kids ages 6-12. Children 5 and under get in for free on both sides of the fence.

The Whynot Motorsports Park is a semi-banked 3/10-mile dirt oval located at the intersection of JW Reynolds Rd. and Old Hwy. 19 Southeast (4773 JW Reynolds Rd., Meridian, MS 39301). For questions please call Phillip Hathcock at (205) 965-3070 or Rodney Wing at (601) 527-0084. The track’s website can be found at www.whynotmotorsportspark.com. The action reaches a boiling point on Sunday, March 11, as the meanest machines in America make their maiden voyage to the legendary Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus for a wheel-to-wheel showdown at “The Mag” with four classes in action including 604 Crate Late Models, 602 Crate Late Models and Factory Stocks.

The pit gate opens at 1 p.m. and spectator gates open at 3. Hot laps start at 4:45 and the green flag waves at 5:15. Grandstand tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and military, $10 for juniors ages 11-16 and kids ages 10 and under are free.

The Magnolia Motor Speedway is a 3/8-mile dirt oval located near the intersection of US 82 and US 45 (take the Macon/Meridian exit off US 82). The track’s website is www.magnoliadirt.com.

For fans unable to attend the action in person this weekend, all three shows-including every lap of every division-will be broadcast live on www.RacinDirt.com.
