NASCAR Hall Of Famer Glen Wood, 93

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Glen Wood, a founding member of Wood Brothers Racing and an inductee into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, has died. He was 93 years old.

Wood Brothers Racing announced Wood’s passing on Twitter Friday morning.

“This is a difficult day for all of us at Ford Motor Co.,” said Edsel B. Ford II, member of the board of directors for the Ford Motor Co. “Glen Wood was the founding patriarch of the oldest continuously operating NASCAR Cup Series team and we consider Wood Brothers Racing a part of our family, the Ford Family. The Wood Brothers race team, by any measure, has been one of the most successful racing operations in the history of NASCAR. Most importantly for our company, Glen and his family have remained loyal to Ford throughout their 69-year history.”

From Stuart, Va., Wood started his career in NASCAR has a driver. Between 1953 and 1964 he made 62 starts in what would eventually become the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, winning four times at North Carolina’s Bowman-Gray Stadium.

He eventually hung up his helmet and alongside his brother, Leonard, would go on to field race cars for some of NASCAR’s most legendary drivers.

Of those drivers, there was none better than David Pearson, who won 43 times while racing for the Wood Brothers between 1972 and ’78. The biggest of those wins was the 1976 Daytona 500, which saw Pearson and his long-time rival Richard Petty crash on the final lap. Pearson was able to re-fire his car and limp across the finish line to win the race.

The Wood Brothers have won the Daytona 500 five times. In addition to Pearson, Tiny Lund won the race in 1963, Cale Yarborough won in ’68, A.J. Foyt drove to victory lane for the team in ’72 and Trevor Bayne won for the team in ’11.

All told Wood Brothers Racing has earned 99 victories at the top level of NASCAR with drivers like Pearson, Yarborough, Foyt, Lund, Neil Bonnett, Buddy Baker, Donnie Allison, Dan Gurney, Marvin Panch, Curtis Turner, Speedy Thompson, Kyle Petty, Dale Jarrett, Morgan Shepherd, Elliott Sadler, Bayne and most recently Ryan Blaney.

Wood inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012 and his brother Leonard, who served as the team’s crew chief for many years, joined him the following year.

RACECAR ENGINEERING ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY 2019 ‘VENDOR COLLEGE’ EVENT

(Lakeland, Florida – January 2, 2019) Racecar Engineering™ has announced that they will be hosting a ‘Vendor College’ for all local, regional, and visiting racers and race teams during the racing action of Speedweeks®* 2019. This exclusive event will take place at Racecar Engineering™, 8126 US Highway 98 North, Lakeland, Florida on Sunday February 10, 2019 from 9AM until 5PM.

Racecar Engineering™ has planned this event during the second weekend in February, after the some of the racing dust has almost settled. They have set aside one day during Speedweeks®* to allow drivers, their teams, and their dealers to interact one-on-one with the factory personnel from over 50 prominent product manufacturers they represent.

Steve Dorer of Racecar Engineering™ explains the idea behind their event – “If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to attend the PRI Show, many racers and teams know that it can be hard to ‘Get Up-Close and Personal’ with their favorite brands and the factory reps they may have spoken to on the phone over the years. And when you’re at the track, let’s face it, it’s tough to connect with the factory reps with 100% focus between set-up, practice and qualifying. So we’re giving these racers and their teams the opportunity to meet our vendors ‘Face-to-Face’, to discuss technical questions or perhaps solve problems. And who knows, they may just find or learn something ‘new’ that may help give them that ‘Winning Edge’ they’ve been looking for to help them during the 2019 racing season and beyond. RCE is fortunate to be at the ‘crossroads’ during these two exciting weeks of short-track racing, as a majority of the racers will be passing right through our city.” Dorer continued, “This date is one of the only ‘less busy days’ that the teams will have, so we decided to officially open our facility at Racecar Engineering™ to allow vendors, racers, and our dealers to ‘Meet-In-Person’, ‘Face-To-Face’ & ‘One-On-One’.”

RCE’s ‘Vendor College’ will feature factory technical seminars throughout the day, along with factory personnel displaying their company’s latest & greatest racing parts and handing out their 2019 new product literature.

This exclusive event will also include goodie bags for all who attend featuring factory literature, decals, and maybe a few surprises. Free food and refreshments will be available. There is also a raffle with great prizes courtesy of participating manufacturers, activities for the kids and maybe best off all, great deals on racing parts and equipment.

Just a few of the manufacturers scheduled to be on-site during the 2019 Racecar Engineering™ ‘Vendor College’ are: Allstar Performance, Bassett, Bert Transmission, Bilstein, Brake-O-Meter, Brinn Transmission, Canton Racing, Cometic Gasket, Daytona Sensors, Design Engineering, Driven Racing Oil, DRP Performance, Factory Canopies, FAST Electronics, Fragola, HANS, Holley, Hyperco, JE Pistons, Jones Racing Products, KRC Power Steering, Maxima Racing Oil, MSD, Powermaster, Progressive Racing Engines, QuickCar Racing, Racing Electronics, RaceQuip, Roux Helmets, Simpson, Strange Oval, Sunoco, Velocita, Wilwood and XS Power Battery. The event exhibitor list is expected to grow quickly, so be sure to check-out the Racecar Engineering™ website and social media channels frequently, as new participating brands will be announced over the next several weeks.

Best of all, remember that the 2019 Racecar Engineering™ ‘Vendor College’ event is absolutely FREE and all proceeds from raffles tickets and food donations will directly benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the primary charity of choice of Racecar Engineering™.

For further detailed event information including host hotel information, event map and technical seminar schedule, please visit the ‘Vendor College’ event page on the Racecar Engineering™ website at: www.racecareng.com/2019-vendor-college-event-info.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact the Racecar Engineering Sales Staff at 800-882-7231.

“Racecar Engineering looks forward to seeing everyone in February and helping race teams get ‘Tuned-In’ and hopefully ‘One-Step-Closer’ to the ‘Winner’s Circle’!”

JGR Co-Founder J.D. Gibbs Dies At 49

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – Joe Gibbs Racing officials confirmed Friday night that team co-founder and co-chairman J.D. Gibbs has died at the age of 49 from complications following a long battle with a degenerative neurological disease.

Gibbs was the eldest son of three-time Super Bowl-winning coach and multi-time NASCAR champion team owner Joe Gibbs, first serving as a tire changer on his father’s team in 1993, the year that JGR won its first Daytona 500 with driver Dale Jarrett.

He spent time as a driver in his own right, making five NASCAR Xfinity Series starts and eight NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series starts between 1998 and 2002, but he was best known for his business role within the motorsports team his father began.

J.D. Gibbs became president of Joe Gibbs Racing in 1998, holding that role and guiding the organization through March of 2015, when the Gibbs family revealed that J.D. was battling brain-function problems and that doctors had no clear answer for his struggles.

In addition to his father Joe, those that Gibbs is survived by include wife Melissa and sons Joe Jackson, William Miller, Jason Dean II and Zachary Taylor, as well as brother Coy, nephews Ty, Case and Jet and niece Elle.

Additional information regarding details for a memorial service will follow at a later date.

Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship Purse Revealed for DIRTcar Northeast Divisions

CONCORD, NC – January 11, 2019 – Since 1957, Hoosier Racing Tire has developed and manufactured racing tires for thousands of race cars.  DIRTcar Northeast is proud to carry their name and logo throughout the Northeast and Canada on Big-Block Modifieds, 358 Modifieds, Sportsman Modifieds, and Pro Stocks at dozens of race tracks. DIRTcar Northeast is proud to announce that in 2019, at the Racing Tire will hand out $36,750 to the top weekly racers at the end of the season.

The Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship takes into account each and every DIRTcar Northeast sanctioned weekly show and Series race for all four divisions of racing. The points standings are calculated by taking each driver’s top 16 finishes. Drivers do not need to do anything except race at DIRTcar sanctioned race tracks and Series races to be eligible. $36,750 will be awarded at the DIRTcar Northeast Banquet at the end of the year. The Big-Block Modified winner receives $5,000 while the top scoring 358 Modified pilot takes home $3,000. Meanwhile the Sportsman Modified and Pro Stock winners receive $1,000 each.

Six speedways are awarding points for the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship for DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds. Albany-Saratoga Speedway, host of the $11,111 to-win Big Show XI, returns to action with weekly racing, featuring the likes of Brett Hearn, Kenny Tremont Jr., and Ronnie and Marc Johnson. Meanwhile at Brewerton Speedway, Billy Decker returns to Gypsum Racing to compete weekly, as well as on the Super DIRTcar Series tour. In 2018, Land of Legends Raceway’s impressive Big-Block Modified field boasted the Super DIRTcar Series top two in points, Matt Sheppard and Erick Rudolph. Rudolph edged out Sheppard in points at the historic Canandaigua oval last season.

The massive temple of speed, Lebanon Valley Speedway, saw Brett Hearn, Kenny Tremont Jr., and Ronnie Johnson battle it out in the top three, and 2019 is expected to be another highly competitive race season. Rex King Jr. dominated the 2018 points at Lernerville Speedway over second place, 15-time Track Champion Brian Swartzlander, who was inducted into the DIRT Hall of Fame in 2018. The legendary Weedsport Speedway has six Big-Block Modified dates scheduled in 2019, including three Super DIRTcar Series clashes. The six races will be counted towards the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship points. All-in-all, $16,400 will be awarded to the top 15 drivers for their best 16 weekly finishes.

A healthy pipeline of talent has bolstered the already highly competitive 358 Modifieds across the Northeast and Canada. Twelve tracks are awarding Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship points in 2019. The competition will be fierce, as the top 10 drivers will have to fight over an $11,250 purse with their strongest 16 finishes. Last season, Steve Bernier topped Chris Raabe and Billy Dunn, but you could’ve thrown a blanket over them, as they were only separated by eight points. Every lap, every position, and every win is important at all DIRTcar sanctioned speedways.

Race fans can catch all the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship DIRTcar 358 Modified action at Plattsburgh Airborne Speedway, Brockville Ontario Speedway, Can-Am Speedway, Cornwall Motor Speedway, Autodrome Drummond, Fulton Speedway, Autodrome Granby, Le RPM Speedway, Merrittville Speedway, Mohawk Int’l Raceway, Ransomville Speedway, and Utica-Rome Speedway. Weekly schedules for all of the 2019 weekly racing action will be released soon.

DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds compete weekly at 21 race tracks. The division is perfect for young racers moving up the DIRTcar ladder, and for veterans racing within a budget. Safety and parity are paramount to the success of DIRTcar Sportsman Modified racing, and those factors have pushed the division to become the most popular form of auto racing in the Northeast. Quebec native Martin Pelletier finished on top of the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship points last season, ahead of Dave Marcucilli who is moving up to 358 and Big-Block Modifieds for 2019. The exceptional racing facilities hosting DIRTcar Sportsman in 2019 are: Plattsburgh Airborne Speedway, Albany-Saratoga Speedway, Bear Ridge Speedway, Brewerton Speedway, Brockville Ontario Speedway, Can-Am Speedway, Cornwall Motor Speedway, Autodrome Drummond, Freedom Speedway, Fulton Speedway, Autodrome Granby, Humberstone Speedway, Land of Legends Raceway, Le RPM Speedway, Merrittville Speedway, Mohawk Int’l Raceway, Outlaw Speedway (new for 2019), Ransomville Speedway, Utica-Rome Speedway, and Weedsport Speedway.

In weekly full-fender action, the DIRTcar Pro Stocks can be seen racing at seven tracks: Albany-Saratoga Speedway, Cornwall Motor Speedway, Autodrome Granby, Le RPM, Lernerville Speedway, and Utica-Rome Speedway. Josh Coonradt took top honors in 2018 over C.D. Beauchamp and Chuck Dumblewski. Once again, the tight-knit family of Pro Stock racers will race door-to-door every week, in their chase for the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship.

Stay tuned for the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship schedules from all of our DIRTcar sanctioned tracks in the Northeast and Canada.

DIRTvision FWD/Hornets Swarm Over The Dirt Track at Charlotte

CONCORD, NC —

The DIRTvision FWD/Hornets showed up in droves and swarmed The Dirt Track at Charlotte for the Driven Racing Oil World Short Track Championship. Driver Jonathan Sarrat won the first and fourth Feature races, while Eddie McGrew and Robert Arch aced Features two and three. The Hornets thrilled the crowd with two, three, and four-wide racing all across the .400-mile Carolina clay racing surface.

Jonathan Sarratt won two 15-lap Features: ““We’ve won a lot of races and ran in a lot of lapped traffic. We just figured out how to get through there without running over anybody or taking anybody out on purpose.” Sarratt was happy to bask in the glow of the Driven Racing Oil World Short Track Championship Victory Lane lights. “I just want to thank K-Mod, Shelby Towing, all my family and all my friends, and the good Lord above to let us race here this weekend and more importantly Charlotte Motor Speedway.”

Sarratt made went for two wins last year but came up just short. “It means a lot. We came here last year and tried and tried. We finished second the first night and third the second night. It means a lot to us.”

DIRTvision FWD/Hornet Feature two was the most hotly contested Feature of the four. Eddie McGrew and Jay Johnson battled lap after lap for the win, right to the checkered flag. “This is 2 years in a row. Me and Jay Johnson ran door-to-door. Every time we run here and runs me clean. Little bit of rubbing but that’s what the fans pay for, to see us rub and race.”

McGrew’s trip to Victory Lane at The Dirt Track at Charlotte is one he’ll never forget: “This is the absolute biggest day of my life. I got my whole family, my wife, my crew chief, my car owner, all my people right here.”

Winner of DIRTvision FWD/Hornet Feature number four was asphalt Late Model spotter Robert Arch. His victory howl was heard far and wide in the Driven Racing Oil World Short Track Championship Victory lane. “It’s always awesome being able to drive. I enjoy spotting for all the asphalt stuff but when I get to come and race dirt, it’s so much fun. I got in the truck this morning at 6:00 AM with my buddy, he’s all I got that I could con into coming with me and when he got into the truck I said, “I’ll be happy if we run top ten.” Everything worked in our favor and then we sat on the pole and won the race! I just won at Charlotte! That’s awesome! It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done as far as a driver,” Arch said.

Robert Arch wasn’t just racing for himself this weekend. His thoughts were with a friend facing the challenge of her life. “Everyone saw the pink car. It’s for a friend of mine. She got diagnosed with breast cancer. I put this pink wrap on it. We kept fighting all day to get here and I hope she keeps fighting and she beats it too.”

Best of the Best converge on Kennedale for Summit USMTS Southern Nationals

KENNEDALE, Texas (Oct. 30)-Everything’s bigger in Texas, and the biggest dirt rack race in the Lone Star State is happening this week when the inaugural Summit Racing Equipment USMTS Southern Nationals takes place Nov. 1-3 at the Kennedale Speedway Park.

With more than 200 of the toughest dirt track racers in the nation converging on the quarter-mile clay oval in Kennedale, fans seeking that final fast fix before winter arrives will see some incredible action all three days with crucial qualifying events on Thursday and Friday followed by last-chance races and main events on Saturday night.

Drivers competing in the Summit USMTS Southern Series powered by Production Jars will battle it out for a $15,000 top prize while Saturday’s Limited Mod and Factory Stock feature winners will pocket $7,500 and $7.,000, respectively.

Fresh off of his 19th Annual Budweiser USRA Fall Nationals win at the Southern New Mexico Speedway this past weekend, reigning USMTS national champ Johnny Scott comes into the event with the Summit USMTS Southern Series points lead as he looks to cap off a dream season with another victory and another title.

But first he’ll have to deal with several others fighting for a final spot in the Summit USMTS Southern Series final top ten in points include Stormy Scott, Dereck Ramirez, Joe Duvall, Zack VanderBeek, Jake O’Neil, Logan Robertson and Zane Ferrell.

Johnny Scott is a two-time USMTS winner in Kennedale with both victories coming in 2013. The series returned in 2017 with VanderBeek walking away with the winner’s check and earlier this year Ethan Dotson snagged his first-ever USMTS victory here after a legendary fight to the finish with Rodney Sanders.

Meanwhile, the driver roster in all three divisions screams talent.
