USMTS throws down Thursday in Texas

The 2019 USMTS campaign begins with a three-night excursion through Texas starting this Thursday, March 14, at the 82 Speedway in Petty. The Kennedale Speedway Park hosts the USMTS touring titans on Friday, March 15, and the Superbowl Speedway in Greenville wraps things up for opening weekend on Saturday, March 16.

The 82 Speedway is a wide, sweeping 1/3-mile high-banked dirt oval and the facility holds 3,400 spectators in its elevated grandstands which offer superb viewing from any seat. The USMTS visited the former East Texas Speedway on June 25, 2015, with Philip Houston picking up the win.

The pit gate opens at 4 p.m. and grandstands open at 5. Draw cutoff for competitors is 6:15, the drivers meeting happens at 6:45, hot laps begin at 7 and racing starts at 7:30.

Spectator admission is $20 or $18 for seniors and members of the military. Youth ages 6-11 are $5 and kids 5 and under get in for free. Pit passes are $35 for all ages. Factory Stocks ($700 to win), Econo Mods ($400 to win) and Limited Mods ($700 to win) join the USMTS Modifieds on the racing card.

The 82 Speedway is located about 15 minutes west of Paris and 25 minutes east of Bonham (1.5 hours northeast of DFW, depending on what part of the Metroplex you’re coming from). The series heads to the Kennedale Speedway Park on Friday, returning to the venue where veteran Terry Phillips held off 2018 USMTS National Champion Johnny Scott for the win this past November in a rain-shortened Summit USMTS Southern Nationals.

Scott is a two-time winner here with both victories coming in 2013. The series returned in 2017 with Zack VanderBeek walking away with the winner’s check and one year ago Ethan Dotson snagged his first-ever USMTS victory here after a legendary fight to the finish with Rodney Sanders.

The pit gate opens at 2 p.m. and grandstands open at 5. The drivers meeting happens at 5:45, draw cutoff for competitors is at 6, hot laps begin at 6:15 and racing starts at 6:45.

This Saturday’s show at the Superbowl Speedway is the eighth attempt, but only three times has Mother Nature cooperated with our efforts here. The USMTS debuted at the semi-banked clay oval in 2014 with Johnny Scott taking the first win that year and his twin brother, Stormy Scott, grabbing the win here three months later. Cade Dillard was the winner in the last event here on May 5, 2016.

LUCAS LATE MODELS RETURN TO ACTION MARCH 15TH-16TH

BATAVIA, OHIO (March 11, 2019) – The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action this weekend, as the nation’s elite dirt late model drivers make their annual trek to Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio and Brownstown Speedway in Brownstown, Ind.

Both events are expected to attract a powerful field of entries as drivers battle in a complete program of: Miller Welders Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and 50-lap, $12,000-to-win finale for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

Friday’s event at Atomic Speedway, the 5th Annual Buckeye Spring 50, will include a $500-to-win event for the Sport Modifieds. The pit gates will open at 3:00pm, followed by general admission gates at 4:00pm. Hot laps will begin at 6:00pm, followed by action-packed racing. Brownstown Speedway, located on the Jackson County Fairgrounds, will kick off its 2019 racing season on Saturday, March 16. In addition to the pulse-pounding action of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, the 22nd Annual Indiana Icebreaker – Presented by John Jones Auto Group will also include Modifieds and Pure Stocks.

The pits gates at Brownstown Speedway will open at noon, followed by general admission gates at 1:00pm. An autograph session with the stars of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will begin at 4:30pm, followed by on-track action at 6:00pm. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series resumes competition, following a knockout Florida-Georgia Speedweeks, averaging nearly 50 super late models per night during the eight-race stretch. Four different drivers have graced Victory Lane thus far, in 2019. Jonathan Davenport and Tyler Erb have recorded three wins each, with Earl Pearson Jr. and Hudson O’Neal each winning one main event.

Davenport, the reigning Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion, leads the current standings by just 40-points over Tyler Erb, who is competing in his first full year on the tour. Pearson is third, followed by Scott Bloomquist and Devin Moran.

Ginger Owens March Madness Will Kick Off 2019 Southern All Stars Championship Campaign

FAYETTEVILLE, TN—The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by MaxFab will start the 2019 season with a traditional opener as the series will sanction the 19th Annual Ginger Owens March Madness 60 paying $12,000 to win and $600 to start for the Southern All Star Super Late Models Sunday afternoon March 3rd. Ginger scored several races for the series over the years and lost her fight to cancer last week after a 14th month battle so Cherokee promoter Scott Childress added her name to the title as it will now be called.

The 2019 Southern All Stars Championship run will also start with this event as it has in numerous years and there will be some familiar names coming back to the series as well as drivers that have intentions on running the series in 2019. Current champion and Cruise with the Champions/Dirtondirt.com Rookie of the Year Jay Scott of Fayetteville,, TN., will be back to defend his title in 2019 as well as the second place finisher Mark Dodson of Caledonia, MS., and fifth place finisher Joseph Faulkner of Flintville, TN., all are expected to return, Four time Southern All Star champion Riley Hickman has plans on returning to the series in 2019.

New drivers that have expressed interest in a 2019 title run include from the state of Georgia, Zach Leonhardi, Andrew Littleton, J R Moseley and Kenny Collins, from Mississippi Leon Henderson and Austin Arnold, from Tennessee Christian Hanger and from Alabama J T Seawright and Billy Franklin.. Many of these drivers will be running for the rookie title as well as championship and will be their first run at a touring series title.

The race itself will be another one of the Southern All Star events that is action packed as the feature will be 60 laps, along with SUNOCO Race Fuels/Knowles Race Parts qualifying, Hoosier Racing Tires qualifying heats; PPM Racing Products B Main will all be part of the action.

Friday night March 1st will be practice night as well as Saturday March 2nd there will be practice session for the super late teams with race day Sunday afternoon March 3rd, pits gates are opening at 10 am drivers meeting at 12:30 and hit laps to follow.

Winter Freeze IX, Night Two Goes to the Second Georgian in Two Races

SYLVANIA, GA – Feb. 9, 2019 – Georgia native Shane Clanton broke a year-and-a-half winless streak by dominating the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series 50-lap Feature Saturday night at Screven Motor Speedway.

Clanton, the 2015 Series champion from Zebulon, GA, had gone 51 races without a win before earning his fourth victory at Screven and 43rd all-time in World of Outlaws competition, holding off Kyle Hardy and Chase Junghans to the checkered flag.

According to “The Georgia Bulldog” himself, going winless last season never actually bothered him as much as most fans thought it would have. In fact, he used the dry spell as fuel to get better. Now that the monkey is off of his back, Clanton will look to build on this momentum as the current points leader heading into Volusia, where he has been so dangerous in past years with five wins since 2015.

“It feels real good,” Clanton said. “To go almost a year and a half… like I said at the banquet [last year], it just makes you mad. And the guy who wins, it just makes him more determined to come back and win again, and that’s what we’ve done. We’ve worked awful hard over the winter to build a new racecar here.”

In what was almost a perfect night, Clanton qualified second overall out of 39 cars, won his heat race and redrew the pole for the Morton Buildings Feature. Taking the lead on lap 1, he faced several long strings of lapped traffic, as the race’s first caution didn’t fly until lap. But Clanton was able to handle the pressure from those behind him, much like all great veterans of the sport do.

“I guess it’s lucky to get number one but I think our car was good enough to pass a couple of cars,” Clanton said with the biggest smile on his face. “I was just biding my time, trying not to get into too much lapped traffic, just didn’t want to get myself in a bind. We rode a long way, and to come up with the win, it’s pretty special.”

And how special it was for Clanton and the Capital Chassis stable this weekend, with Chris Madden putting his Capital on the podium in Friday night’s race and a top-10 on Saturday. Clanton said Madden’s help has been and will continue to be instrumental in Capital’s success on the tour this season.

“I’ve had some help when Chris came along after Charlotte [last year] and we went and tested my car, then we built this car,” Clanton said. “We’ve changed some things on it and evidently we’re going in the right direction, so that’s the good thing.”

Another special finish came right behind Clanton – the Viper Motorsports entrant of Rookie contender Kyle Hardy. The Virginian had a solid night on Friday, coming from 17th to finish 11th after winning his Late Chance Showdown. But Saturday night was a much different story, as he set fast time in Group B, won his heat and redrew third.

Hardy made the pass for second around Jason Covert on lap 12 and chased Clanton down the rest of the way but was never able to make the pass. However, he held his own through lapped traffic, staying right with Clanton the entire way and closing a two-second gap before the lap 45 caution. Overall, a great showing by the new Barry Wright Race Cars house driver.

“It turned out to be great,” Hardy said. “We’ve got a greatly prepared car by Lance and Barry Wright, and that means the world. We ran decent last night, wasn’t the greatest, but second place tonight was, by far, great for us.”

After the 11th-place on Friday night and the runner-up finish on Saturday, Hardy now leads in Rookie points by 20 markers over Ricky Weiss, who fell back to 15th in Saturday’s Feature. This gives him a big boost of confidence, heading into Volusia for the DIRTcar Nationals.

“Absolutely, it’s a huge boost of confidence,” Hardy said with a grin. “We didn’t have two bad nights, we had a decent and a great night. We’re just super happy about it and ready to get going.”

Hardy’s previous experience at Screven played right into his favor on Saturday night, as his three prior starts seemed to give him the edge over his fellow Rookie competitors.

“It definitely helped, I’ve raced here three times before and it was the fifth time over the weekend, so it turned out to be great,” Hardy said.

In what should have been another Rookie in the top five, Cade Dillard seemed to have a great fourth-place run going before tangling with Jason Covert in turn three with just two laps remaining. Dillard was obviously disappointed by the incident and the resulting 19th-place finish, but it gave him plenty to build off of heading into Volusia next week and was a great rebound, just one night after having to fight for a 14th-place run after taking a provisional.

“I had a good car in the feature,” Dillard said. “I was just riding, trying to stay out of trouble. Had a chance there at the end, got under [Covert], I’d say nearly nose-to-nose with him. I’m not sure if he didn’t see us there or saw us and just turned left… Unfortunately, it killed our good run for us.”

Two Last Chance Showdowns & Feature will start the show on Monday, February 11

DELEON SPRINGS, FL — Feb. 9, 2019 — The DIRTcar UMP Modifieds were to race in the first of two Big Gator Championship Qualifier Nights on Saturday, February 9 at Volusia Speedway Park. It was to be Night #5 of the 48th annual DIRTcar Nationals for the Ironmen of the DCN. Half of the 104 teams that had competed in the DIRTcar Nationals through the first four nights got through their Heat Races with threatening skies all around the half-mile high-banked dirt oval in DeLeon Springs, FL.

As post-race ceremonies were happening on the front stretch at the conclusion of the World of Outlaw NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Feature, Mother Nature made her second appearance of the night. Unfortunately, enough moisture had fallen and continued to drench the facility, forcing DIRTcar Racing & DIRTcar Nationals Officials to postpone the two Last Chance Showdowns and Feature for the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds to Monday, February 11.

Prior to, and in between rain delays, Lucas Lee scored his first Fast Qualifier award of the week with an 18.358 = 98.050mph and he won his Heat Race. Ryan Fowler, Brandon Green and David Stremme picked up the other Heat Race triumphs. In the Redraw of the Heat Race winners, Stremme and Lee drew the front row with Fowler and Green drawing the third and fourth spots.

The second half of the field, those who did not participate on Saturday night, will take over for the second (now first) Big Gator Championship Qualifier Night on Sunday, February 10. The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series will race in their final night at Volusia also on Sunday to complete Sprint Car Week at the DCN and crown the first 2019 DCN Big Gator Championship.

Then on Monday, February 11, the show will start with the conclusion of Saturday’s program for the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds with two Last Chance Showdowns and a 20-Lap Feature. Once those are over, DCN Late Model Week begins at Volusia with the first of two nights of action for the DIRTcar Super Late Models. It’s also the 15th annual Big Gator Championship Night and the crowning of the 2019 DCN Big Gator Champion for the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds.

The World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series take over on the Late Model side starting on Wednesday, February 13 while the Super DIRTcar Big Block Modified Series take over for the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds starting on Tuesday, February 12.

RACE REPORT: Daryn Pittman Powers to Opening Night Victory at Volusia Speedway Park

BARBERVILLE, FL — Feb. 8, 2019 — The largest Friday night crowd in DIRTcar Nationals history witnessed Daryn Pittman win a caution-free thriller in the World of Outlaws NOS® Energy Drink Sprint Car Series opener at Volusia Speedway Park’s DIRTcar Nationals. Pittman, who led two sprint car races this week at Volusia only to finish second, reversed his fortune Friday when he chased down Shane Stewart with five laps to go and held him off to the checkered flag. NASCAR Xfinity star Christopher Bell raced to a third-place finish, completing the Outlaws’ first all Oklahoma-native podium in the series’ 41-year history.

DAVENPORT BACK IN VICTORY LANE AT EAST BAY

TAMPA, FLA (February 8, 2019) – Jonathan Davenport grabbed the lead from Tyler Erb on lap 38 and led the rest of the way to score his second win in the Wrisco Industries Winternationals presented by Lucas Oil.

Erb entered the event with two wins during the week and bolted to the lead at the start of the 50-lap main event. Erb held the lead until Davenport forged ahead with twelve laps remaining. Erb’s Best Performance Motorsports, Rocket crossed the stripe in second followed by Earl Pearson Jr. in the Ronnie and Terri Stuckey-owned, Lucas Oil Products, Black Diamond Race Car.

Completing the top five were Scott Bloomquist in the STEEL-IT, Sweet-Bloomquist entry, and Devin Moran in the Big River Steel, Dunn-Benson Ford, Rocket.

Davenport made his way to Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 38th time in his career, joined by his son Blane. “I just want to thank all of the fans for coming out tonight. Knowing that tonight was a point race, we really wanted to put on a good show. We have had a really good car here the last three nights. When I turned under Erb to get the lead he left me some room there where there was some brown on the race track. Congrats to him [Erb] and Earl [Pearson] for both putting on a good run tonight as well.”

“We have such a great race team,” Davenport added. “Thanks to Lance Landers for putting this together. Thanks to my crew: Jason, Tyler and Lance they do such a great job. Gavin [Landers] is here this week and Brewster back at the t-shirt trailer. The track has been racy all week. This is what we love doing. We come down here to compete and mix it up with everybody and you never know who is going to win.”

“It was crazy when the bottom kind of died there,” said Erb. “The top got faster in one and two. I just went up top and out of a lucky chance I could run there. We got to three-wide for the lead and that’s when JD got by me. Congratulations to JD and his team, they had a great car, Earl did too. We will take second tonight, it was another podium finish for the team, and we will come back tomorrow night.”

Pearson was runner-up to Hudson O’Neal on Thursday night and took third behind Davenport and Erb tonight. “This is all for the guys here they have worked their tails off during the winter. We went to Arizona to try some stuff out there. My Black Diamond Chassis has been really good since we have come down here. It has been a very good week for us, and we will keep digging.”

DAVENPORT STRIKES AT EAST BAY

TAMPA, FLA. (February 6, 2019) – The defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion, Jonathan Davenport survived a torrid battle with Brandon Sheppard to register his first series win of 2019 on Wednesday night at East Bay Raceway Park.

Davenport took the lead from Sheppard on lap 26 and then held off Tyler Erb to win the Wrisco Industries Winternationals presented by Lucas Oil. It was Davenport’s fifth-career win at the “Clay by the Bay” and the 37th Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of his career.

Erb’s Best Performance Motorsports, Rocket entered the event winning three of the first four events of the season and was looking for his third straight victory at East Bay. Josh Richards came from the 23rd starting spot in the Clint Bowyer Racing, Peak Antifreeze and Coolant, Rocket to place third. Brandon Overton finished fourth after starting 18th. Sheppard rounded out the top five.

A former Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year, Colton Flinner earned the first PFC Brakes Pole Award of his career and led the first eight laps of the main event before yielding to Brian Shirley on the ninth circuit.

Davenport started fifth and kept pace with the leaders before charging to the point on the twelfth circuit. Davenport held the lead until Sheppard move ahead on lap 24. Davenport quickly fought back, passing Sheppard on lap 26 to take the lead for the final time.

“I definitely wanted to see that last caution,” said Davenport. “I was getting into lapped traffic and everybody was on the bottom going into one and two. Everybody out there earned their paycheck tonight. This is the slickest place in the world. When I went into three and four, I just put it on the floor. I can’t thank my crew enough. We all put our heads together. We went back through our notes to see what we were missing on the set-up and their hard work paid off.”

Erb maintained his solid start to the season with a second-place finish. “Not winning that heat race and starting eighth probably hurt us tonight. Those restarts were wild. I was on the outside everytime and I didn’t want to be there. We had a good race going. I hated to see that caution once I got past Sheppard. I could tell that JD’s [Jonathan Davenport’s] crew was telling him to run down the middle. It was a really great night. Good job to JD, Josh [Richards], and Sheppy [Sheppard]. It was a crazy and exciting race for sure.”

Richards overcame issues in his heat race and rebounded with a strong third-place run. “We had a long night. The motor hadn’t been running right. We have had some fuel problems the last few days. I told the crew something wasn’t right. We made a change right before the feature and I was just going to ride around there and it started going pretty good. We had a shot at the lead, but I’m happy to finish third.”

TYLER ERB SCORES EAST BAY OPENER

TAMPA, FLA. (February 4, 2019) – Tyler Erb scored his second Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season in the opening night of the Wrisco Industries Winternationals presented by Lucas Oil on Monday Night at East Bay Raceway Park.

Erb started on the pole of the main event but did not take the lead until the thirteenth circuit. He was one of four different race leaders, others being Jonathan Davenport, Josh Richards, and Brandon Sheppard. Erb won the thrilling opener by just nine-tenths of a second – holding off Josh Richards, Brandon Sheppard, Austin Hubbard and Don O’Neal en route to his first ever win at the “Clay by the Bay.”

Defending series champion Jonathan Davenport bolted to the lead at the start of the race and led the first eight laps. Richards then forged ahead for one lap, before Sheppard took command of the race for two circuits. Erb then charged around Sheppard to take the lead for good on lap 13 and pulled away enough to thwart any efforts by Richards and Sheppard.

Richards’ Clint Bowyer Racing, Peak Antifreeze and Coolant, Rocket and Sheppard’s Mark Richards Racing, Valvoline, Rocket battled hard for second in the last 15 laps of the race to join Erb on the podium, with Richards just edging Sheppard at the finish.

The Young Texan [Erb] was elated with his second win of 2019 on the tour. “I am super-excited to get this opportunity to work with Randall Edwards, Eric, and Kelly. This is a dream come true for me. I have been dreaming of this chance for a long time and to finally get to this point is very satisfying, but you have to stay hungry. We still have a lot of racing left this year, but we couldn’t ask for a better start to the season.”

“It feels really great to win here at East Bay! This is such an historic track. I led two or three races here last year but let them slip away. I could feel Josh underneath me in three and four and I knew that if I lost the race, it wasn’t going to be because of a lack of effort.”

Richards recorded his best finish of the season with his second-place run. “Tyler did a great job out there. I want to thank all the guys who work so hard on the car to get us up front. We had a pretty good car and we made a couple of changes. It was really maneuverable out there. We have been up front in every race so far this year and we can’t complain about that.”

Sheppard, who entered the night with three-career wins at East Bay, finished third. “We had a strong car all night long. It was fun to drive out there on this track tonight. If they have the track like this every night this week, it will be a whole lot of fun. I am sure it was a good show for the fans as well.”

Southern All Stars Change & Add Dates to 2019 Schedule

FAYETTEVILLE, TN—The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by MaxFab has made some additions and adjustments to the 2019 schedule.

The South Georgia Shootout that was originally set for September 13-14 between the Oglethorpe Speedway has now been moved to Friday & Saturday night September 6th-7th. The Oglethorpe Speedway event will pay $4,000 to win and the Screven race will pay $10,000 to win.

The addition to the schedule includes these same two tracks as they have added Friday & Saturday events on June 7th at the Oglethorpe Speedway a $4,000 to win event and June 8th at the Screven Motor Speedway with an $11,000 to win event.

The series will open the 2019 season on Sunday afternoon March 3rd at The Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC., for the 16th Annual March Madness paying $12,000 to win.
