DAVID GREEN INHERITS LAST LAP SUPER LATE MODEL VICTORY AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

Again it was “just one of those nights” Saturday evening at Auburndale Speedway that saw plenty of great racing, some wild action and some “hurt feelings” along the way as the show wrapped up just 20 minutes shy of finishing on Easter Sunday.

All in all it was a great night for the kids and they were out in force for a big Easter egg hunt that was sponsored by PB of Central Florida (a demolition contractor in Winter Haven) and Kitto Sheds & Equipment of Dundee.  Several of the eggs contained special gold tickets and those kids got new bikes, scooters and games courtesy of the sponsors.  After the egg hunt, the drawings were held for a large number of Easter baskets donated by race teams, track staff and fans.  Needless to say, the kids all left the track very happy.

The headliner for the night was the Easter Bunny Special for the Super Late Models.  Scheduled for 100 laps, the race was trimmed to 50 laps due to the lateness of the hour, among other things.

Just ten cars signed in but it was a stout field as Michael Atwell made the trip up from Naples and set quick time at 13.661 seconds with Chris Fontaine second fastest at 13.792 followed by Matt McCrary, George Gorham, Jr. and Jon Guy.  The top six in time trials were inverted for the start of the feature placing Ft. Pierce driver David Green on the pole and Guy on the outside pole.

Green jumped out front but the overall complexion of the race would change on lap three.  Gorham hit the back of Guy’s car going into turn two as Guy checked up briefly.  Gorham then spun collecting most of the field.  When all was said and done both Gorham and Kendall Anderson were done for the night while Guy and Charles Kopach pitted to make repairs but returned to action.

Other cars also had minor cosmetic damage but were able to stay on the speedway.  At this point, with just 8 cars left and the time closing in on 11 pm, track officials decided to cut the race to 50 laps.

Green continued to set the pace after the restart just ahead of Fontaine who lost second spot to McCrary on the tenth lap only to return the favor two laps later bringing Atwell with him into third spot.  Fontaine, who was driving very aggressively, forced his way by Green in turn one and grabbed the lead on lap 19.  Two laps later Atwell got by Green for second just as Guy fell out of the event as the earlier damage had hurt the performance of his racer.

McCrary also called it a night during the 29th lap.

Atwell began to really put the pressure on Fontaine who was doing all he could to hold on to the top spot.  With five laps to go, Atwell slammed his way by Fontaine coming off turn four and took the lead… a move that did not set well with Fontaine.  Fontaine stayed right with Atwell then turned him around in turn three during the final lap.

Although Fontaine crossed the stripe first, he got the black flag instead of the checker.  Green, running third when the white flag flew, was thus awarded the victory, his first ever at Auburndale Speedway.  Atwell got his car going and finished the race but was also placed at the rear of the finishing order for aggressive driving.  That allowed Roger Blevins to take home the runner up spot followed by Brian Dorer.  Charles Kopach was a lap down but took fourth as credited as being the last car running after the DQ’s.

“We don’t get to race as often as we would like to,” said Green in victory lane.  “I just want to thank the Drawdy brothers for giving me the opportunity to drive their car and it’s great to get them a win tonight.”

Although he fell out just past half way, McCrary was credited with fifth spot followed by Guy, Gorham, Anderson, Atwell and Fontaine.

The Legend Car brought 17 machines to the track and the twin heat races were won by Seth Adams and Sam Cornman.  Several drivers were making their Legend Car debut including former TBARA Sprint Car champion Bo Hartley who was “testing” a car that will eventually be driven by his son Stephen. Adams started on the outside pole for the feature and led every lap to score the win in a race that saw a few cautions but only for minor incidents.  It would be the last race here for Adams as he’ll be going into the ranks of the U. S. Army in just a few days.

Noah Cornman, winner of the last two Legend Car races here, was the driver putting on a show in this one as he methodically drove his way to the front and “Little Gator” was right behind Adams at the finish with Adams’ teammate Kyle Pitts holding on for third over Jarrett Wagman and Dennis Misuraca.

Completing the top ten were Jojo Viverito, Mike Verhaagh, Brad Perez, Derek Stansbury and Hartley.  Rounding out the finishers were Jason Carpenter, Dylan Brewer, Bob Wilson, Logan Misuraca and Sam Cornman.

Mike Rudder and Jeff Firestine topped the heat races for the Modified Mini Stocks but Rudder had problems during the pace laps for the feature and fell out before the green flag flew.  Kenny Uhl, Jr. grabbed the lead at the start and never looked back taking his first win here in some time.  Ken Nurse, Jr. held off Firestine for second with Chris Spring fourth and Clint Holmes fifth.  Mike Kerrivan, Richard Browm, Rachelle Rudolph, Mike Prevatt, Dalton Williamson and Rudder completed the finishing field.

The best race of the night was the V-8 Bomber feature.  Just six cars were in the field but they put on quite a show.  Heat winner James Wright III was getting plenty of pressure as he led the way after starting on the pole for the feature.  Ronnie Abney, Jr. had his new car handling well and he went to the outside of Wright with three laps to go as Wright was battling an engine that was beginning to “lock up.”  Despite bouncing off the wall at one point, Abney was able to make the outside pass stick and he took a very popular win, the first of his young career at Auburndale Speedway.

Brandon Love came through to claim second trailed by George Gorham, Jr. and Wright, who faded to fourth on the final lap.  Brian Harbin was fifth and Bud Bronson sixth.

A wild and wacky Mini Stock feature saw for drivers – Fred Martin, John Cummins, Jr., Matt Cummins and Steven O’Steen – all disqualified for rough driving and unsportsmanlike conduct.  Things got so out of hand that the race got the checker three laps early just to calm things down.  That did not matter to Chuck Frazier as he led every lap to claim his first win of the year after also winning the earlier heat race.  Chris Narramore, Jr. outlasted the rest of the field to claim second over David McCaig, Devin Brown and Guy Kolmel.

Heat winner Maria Martins dominated the Mini Cup feature taking the lead from Russell Bush on lap three then streaking away for a very easy win.  Bush took second ahead of Clay Samuels, Bill Rychel, Leandro Martins (Maria’s cousin who was making his first start here), Wilson Martins and Douglas Herrin, Jr.

There was a scary moment during the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association (DAARA) Sprint Car feature when heat winner Robert Campbell slammed hard into the turn one wall.  His immaculate Sprinter was badly damaged but Campbell emerged unhurt.

Duane LeCornu went on to win the race taking the measure of Chris Hahn, Josh Rynd, Dave Cash and Campbell.  Merle Strickland did not start.

Cush Revette, Jr. drove his “Crown 7” 1957 Chevy convertible to the win in the DAARA V-8 Stock Car feature ahead of heat winner Dr. Carl Doughty.  Steve Slaughter was third ahead of Darren Nichols and Tommy Gamble.

The DAARA 6-Cylinder Stock Car feature was claimed by Richie Gomes who also won the heat race.  Dave Davis trailed in second ahead of Steve Parrish, Rocky Buckles and David Glenn.

DAVENPORT BECOMES FIRST REPEAT WINNER AT HAGERSTOWN

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 13, 2019) – Jonathan Davenport became the first repeat winner in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned events at Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday night.

Heading into tonight’s event at the Dirt Capitol, the series had made 11 appearances and there had been 11 different winners. The defending National Champion led the entire race on his way to winning the 38th Annual Stanley Schetrompf Classic. Davenport now sits at five series wins so far in 2019, and his 41st overall.

Brandon Sheppard roared to a runner-up finish, holding off Jimmy Owens at the line. Rick Eckert was fourth and Tim McCreadie rallied from his 19th starting position to round out the top five.

“It’s really great to become the first driver to win twice in series races at Hagerstown, this is such a historic track,” said Davenport. I was getting really, really loose on that long green flag run and I got behind those lapped cars. Jimmy [Owens] and Sheppard were right on us. Thank goodness for that caution. It saved us. I haven’t raced here many times; but it definitely brings back memories of my asphalt days. You have to drive the track straighter than most. You also have to have a different mindset to drive this track. Thank you to Jason, Tyler, Matt, and everybody who works on the crew.”

A caution for Jason Jameson on lap 25 allowed lapped traffic to clear out in front of Davenport after Owens and Sheppard closed to within a car length. On the restart, Davenport pulled away and Sheppard moved around Owens for second.

“A couple of the lap-cars were giving me fits tonight. One of them kept switching lanes on me and I am not sure if he saw me because he was racing me side-by-side. I bumped wheels with him, and I thought here we go. Jack Cornett is here tonight, and he builds a great engine. Thanks to all of the fans for coming out tonight looks like they had a great turnout.”

Sheppard had his second straight runner-up finish with the series. “We were all bunched up racing for the lead and then the caution came out. JD and Owens were doing a good job and I was going to have a tough time passing them. It was a lot of fun out there. I had to run my stuff harder than I wanted to. Luckily, on the restart I slipped by Jimmy. I couldn’t gain any ground on JD. I was trying all sorts of things to catch him, but I think I burnt my tires up too much. This was a lot better than my last showing at Hagerstown for sure.”

Tonight, Owens piloted the same back-up car which got him to victory lane Atomic on Thursday and recorded another podium finish on Saturday night. “JD was really good, and he was making his way through traffic really well. I felt at the time we had gotten to him [Davenport] and we were a little better than him. We had a bird’s eye view and I thought we could sneak up on him and then the caution came out and ruined it for us. Our tires didn’t refire and it was just a drag race until we got to traffic again.”

The winner’s Lance Landers Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by: Nutrien Ag Solutions, ASC Warranty, Penske Racing Shocks, Spartan Mowers, Go Lithium Batteries, Valvoline, Hoosier Tires, and Mega Plumbing of the Carolinas.

Completing the top ten were Earl Pearson Jr., Josh Richards, Trever Feathers, Gene Knaub, and Jason Covert.

OWENS RECOVERS FOR LUCAS OIL WIN AT ATOMIC

CHILLICOTHE, OHIO (April 11, 2019) – Jimmy Owens recovered from mechanical issues early on Thursday night to win the 5th Annual Buckeye Spring 50 at Atomic Speedway. The three-time National Champion led all 50 laps of the event for his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season.

Owens broke a fan blade in hot laps, which relegated him to his back-up car. His backup entry proved to be the best of the night as he dominated the main event. Brandon Sheppard tried to track down Owens but came home in second-place. Jonathan Davenport came home in third. Tim McCreadie finished fourth and Earl Pearson took fifth at the finish.

Owens started third and quickly darted to the lead on the opening lap with Tyler Erb following. Having won a pair of events last September at the Ohio Speed plant, Erb was looking for his third straight win at Atomic. Erb held the second spot until Sheppard got around him. A furious battle behind Owens ensued for the runner-up slot between Sheppard and several drivers, lasting several laps. Pearson went to the outside and briefly took second from Sheppard at the halfway mark. Sheppard came back a lap later to regain the position.

Owens was set on cruise control for most of the race and was rolling around the 3/8ths mile track with as much as a straightaway lead at times. A caution flag with 43 laps complete appeared to set up a dash to the finish between Owens and Sheppard, but Owens pulled away to become the seventh different winner this year on the tour.

The 47-year-old Owens was ecstatic to finally breakthrough with his first series win of 2019. “We fixed everything on the main car this week from last Saturday. We broke a fan blade in hot laps. Then we had to get our back-up car out. My hat is off to the crew for getting this car prepared. They busted their rear ends tonight. We had a quick turnaround time to get it in line just to qualify.”

“The crew gave me a good car that I could feel confident in,” Owens added. “We had second quick time in our group and then we went out and won our heat race and so here we are in Victory Lane. We have a good car, a great team, and we are just as capable as anybody to run up front night in and night out. Thanks to the fans for coming tonight to watch a good show and thanks to the track crew for a well-prepared track.”

Sheppard congratulated Owens on his win. “We had a really good race tonight. Jimmy and his crew are really rolling. It is a lot of fun running against these Lucas Oil guys. Everybody races each other clean and it was getting exciting. Thanks for all of the fans for coming out on a Thursday night. Thanks to Mark Richards and Steve Baker for giving me this opportunity.”

Davenport was seeking his fifth series win of the season. “I tried to slide Brandon there once and couldn’t quite clear him. I wanted to try again but I didn’t have him cleared enough to do so and I wasn’t going to take both of us out. We didn’t take off like we wanted to,” said the defending series champion who heads to Sharon Speedway on Friday night maintaining his points lead.

The winner’s Ramirez Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by a Durham Racing Engine and sponsored by: Boomtest Well Service, Rhino Ag, Reece Monument Company, Tommy Pope Construction, FK Rod Ends, Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Shocks, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Red Line Oil.

Completing the top ten were Devin Moran, Tyler Erb, Steve Casebolt, Hudson O’Neal, and Colton Burdette.

Ross Bailes Claims First-Career Lucas Oil Victory

SEYMOUR, TENN (April 5, 2019) – Ross Bailes rolled to his first-career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory on Friday night at 411 Motor Speedway. The 29-year-old, South Carolina native led all 50 laps of “Tennessee’s Action Track 50” en route to one of the biggest wins of his career. Bailes took the lead at the start of the race, withstood several cautions, and managed to hold off a late race charge from three other drivers to become the sixth different winner of the 2019 season. Donald McIntosh took second over Jimmy Owens. Current Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series point leader, Jonathan Davenport finished in fourth followed by Dale McDowell. “This seems unbelievable,” said Bailes. “We have tried for so long to win one of these and we just couldn’t get it done. To come to a new place like this and to get it done here is just unimaginable. I felt good on the bottom and then when I got to lapped traffic I was slowing down. I knew I needed to search around and do something different. My crew guys told me to move up and when I did the car felt really good up there.” Bailes added: “This place is awesome. I think if we would have run another 50 laps it would have been even better. I was happy with it. There was grip on the bottom . I didn’t have to worry about the top for the first half of the race and then it got racy all over. This win is now at the top of my list for sure. Maybe we can get another one tomorrow night at North Georgia. I want to thank Barry and Lance Wright, Ronnie McCarter and all of my crew it was a great team win that’s for sure.” McIntosh, also looking for his first career Lucas Oil win, settled for second at the line. “Our car was pretty good. I had it prepared to run the top. I was just biding my time out there. I thought I could get up to him [Bailes] and make a run for the win. I am blessed to be back at Blount Motorsports and maybe we can get that first Lucas Oil win tomorrow night at North Georgia.” “I don’t think he [Bailes] knew the top was there. “We had a great race for second with Jimmy [Owens]. I think I showed him [Bailes] the top one time and he moved up there in traffic. Racing with these guys and from where we started that’s a pretty awesome run,” said McIntosh who started sixth. Owens finished third after a late-race charge. “We have been pretty good in East Tennessee so far this year. We have had good race cars all year long. It feels good to finally finish a Lucas Oil race. Last year we had such terrible misfortune. This year seemed like it was going to start off the same way but we just aren’t going to let that happen. McIntosh had a good car, and he was up on the wheel. I felt like we could have gotten second, but we are just happy to finish on the podium.” The winner’s Barry Wright Race Cars ICON Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by: Felony Farms, Service Transport Inc., Bailes Construction, Big A’s Custom Graphics, C&H Paving, Bobby Taylor Oil, Nichols Plumbing, Penske Shocks, Hoosier Tire South, Fred Caldwell Chevrolet, and Viper Risk Management Group. Completing the top ten were Kyle Bronson, Ryan King, Josh Richards, Tyler Erb, and Earl Pearson Jr. Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series

Over a million reasons to be part of the Super DIRTcar Series in 2019

CONCORD, NC — March 21, 2019 — 2019 is officially the year of the Big-Block Modified. The Super DIRTcar Series and its tracks are proud to present a massive $1.25 million in prize money for Series competitors throughout the year.

The record-breaking Super DIRTcar Series cash prizes are spread throughout the season — $877,000 in race purses, $123,000 in the Championship point fund, $205,000 at NAPA Super DIRT Week, and over $20,000 in contingency sponsor cash bonuses.

The crown jewel of the Super DIRTcar Series is, of course, NAPA Super DIRT Week at Oswego Speedway. The 48th action-packed autumn classic runs Wednesday to Sunday, October 8-13 2019. Sunday’s Billy Whittaker Cars 200 caps off the greatest week in DIRTcar racing with the $50,000-to-win finale. The total purse for the week, including the Friday Night Lights Triple Qualifiers, is $205,000.

There are eight NAPA Super DIRT Week Qualifiers peppered throughout the 2019 schedule, and all of them pay at least $10,000-to-win. The Series returns to Can-Am Speedway on Saturday, April 13 to kick-off the points-paying season with the Thunder in the Thousand Islands 100 $10,000-to-win lid lifter.

On Tuesday, June 25, Brett Hearn’s The Big Show XI returns to Albany-Saratoga Speedway. The 100-lap Feature pays out $11,111 to the winner along with a guaranteed start in the Billy Whittaker Cars 200. Less than a week later, the newly dubbed Plattsburgh Airborne Speedway, hosts the Series for another $10,000-to-win NAPA Super DIRT Week Qualifier on Monday, July 1.

July is the month of the money as it includes four $10,000-to-win 100-lap Features. After Plattsburgh, the Orange County Fair Speedway hosts the Battle on the Midway 100 on Thursday, July 18. Then Weedsport Speedway’s Hall of Fame 100 brings the Series to the historic track on Sunday, July 28. Finally, July’s four-crown finale is a 100-lapper on the prestigious Eldora Speedway high banks in support of the Gander Mountain NASCAR Truck Series rounds out the month.

Lebanon Valley Speedway’s annual Mr. DIRT Track USA pays $17,500 to the winner on Saturday, August 31. The final NAPA Super DIRT Week Qualifier falls takes place Saturday, September 14 at Mohawk International Raceway with the Mohawk 100. All other Super DIRTcar Series races pay out a minimum of $7,500 to the winner and at least $500 to start the race.

None of this would be possible without the support of our highly professional DIRTcar Big-Block Modified drivers, passionate and hard-working track owners and promoters, and sponsors. VP Race Fuels and Hoosier Racing Tire provide excellent support for our racers throughout the year. Contingency sponsors include: ASI Racewear, Bicknell Racing Products, Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux, Dig Safely, Cometic Gasket, COMP Cams,DART, Fox Shox, Intercomp, JE Pistons, KSE Racing Products, MSD, and Wrisco (Exclusive Racing Aluminum); along with manufacturer sponsors, including: Beyea Headers, FireAde, Racing Electronics and TNT Rescue.

King of America IX, Battle at the Bullring super show starts Wednesday

HUMBOLDT, Kan. (March 19)–The Humboldt Speedway is hell-bent for hammer-down with the nation’s fastest and nastiest Modified and B-Mod racers converging on the Southern Kansas clay this Wednesday-Saturday, March 20-23, for a colossal two-headed monster of an event.

With below freezing temperatures three weeks ago, officials from ‘The Hummer’ announced the postponement of the Battle at the Bullring V to take place in conjunction with one of the crown jewels of the USMTS campaign-King of America IX powered by summit.

“This show will be one of the biggest dirt track racing events of the year with the combining of two huge shows into one,” said track owner Ryan Whitworth.

USMTS competitors will be seeking a $12,000 top prize while the B-Mods will battle for $8,500 to win Saturday’s main event.

Drivers in both classes will race in two heat races Thursday and two more on Friday from four different starting positions with 10 to 14 cars in each. Each driver’s best three efforts will count toward Saturday’s feature lineups with any tie-breakers, if needed, being determined by the fourth heat race.

The top 12 in heat race passing points from the first two nights will be locked into the Saturday finale with the remainder of the field coming from Saturday’s “B” Mains.

B-Mods will award three provisionals (one each from IMCA, USRA and Wissota national points) from the pool of drivers that fail to qualify for the “A” Main on Saturday. A past champion provisional will be available for USMTS competitors.

There will be an open practice on Wednesday, March 20, which will be the only time for hot laps during the week’s event. The pits gate opens at noon and practice is from 6-9 p.m. Pit passes are $20 for adults or $10 for kids ages 5-10. Admission to the grandstands is free.

On Thursday and Friday, tech opens at 10:30 a.m., the pit gate opens at noon, grandstands open at 5 p.m., the drivers’ meeting happens at 6:15 and racing starts at 7 p.m. sharp.
