MANSFIELD, Ohio (August 23, 2019) – Brandon Sheppard and Mike Marlar won Duel feature events on Friday night of the 2nd annual Dirt Million – Presented by Arizona Sport Shirts at Mansfield Motor Speedway. Each driver earned $10,000 for their 30-lap victories and are guaranteed a starting spot in Saturday night’s Dirt Million finale.
Sheppard took the lead on lap two from pole-sitter Kent Robinson and led the rest of the way to win the first Duel. It was not an easy win for the 26-year-old Illinois racer, as he had to hold off both a charging Jimmy Owens and the defending Dirt Million winner, Earl Pearson Jr. Brandon Overton was fourth, with Hudson O’Neal coming from the fifteenth starting spot to register a fifth-place finish at the checkers. “It was really hard staying out front,” said Sheppard. “They have got the track really good right now. You had to have a line where the car would go best. With traffic in front of us, we really didn’t know where to go. My crew guys are awesome, they kept me up to date on where I needed to be on the track. It was tricky out there. I felt good around the top of three and four and in one and two I felt good all over.” “This car is just phenomenal right now. They have it really tuned in. We had a car that was capable of winning last night. It was just a little harder to pass last night,” said the winner, who recorded his 13th career Lucas Oil win and his first since winning the Indiana Icebreaker at Brownstown (IN) Speedway in March. Owens was in the hunt for the win from the halfway mark and came home in second after passing Pearson on lap 21. “It is hands down better than we ran here last night. It felt good to be battling for the win. Brandon [Sheppard], he is one of the toughest guys in the country right now, and to have him moving around and looking over his shoulder the whole race was pretty awesome.” Pearson; who collected over $202,000 for his win in the Dirt Million a year ago; returned to the Lucas Oil podium with his third-place finish: “It wasn’t too bad tonight. We got up on the cushion and did our thing, which is unusual for me to go to the cushion. We weren’t bad up on the cushion either. When Brandon moved up there, we couldn’t do much after that.” The winner’s Mark Richards Racing, Rocket Chassis is powered by a Durham Racing Engine and sponsored by: Valvoline, Seubert Calf Ranches, Ace Metals Works, Gunter’s Honey, Keyser Manufacturing, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Integra Racing Shocks. Completing the top ten were Kent Robinson, Shannon Babb, Shane Clanton, Max Blair, and Gordy Gundaker.

Mike Marlar Wins Duel #2 at Mansfield
(HeathLawsonPhotos.com)

Marlar claimed his fourth Lucas Oil win of the season, leading all 30-laps for a convincing victory. Chase Junghans; for the second night in a row; recorded a second-place finish. Michael Norris, in the Clint Bowyer Racing #5 entry, posted his best career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series finish rounding out the podium. Jonathan Davenport finished fourth with Tyler Erb crossing the finish line in fifth. Marlar who also started on the pole of a Thursday night duel was not going to be denied tonight as he stormed to the lead early on over Norris and Junghans. Norris, who like Junghans, was seeking his first career Lucas Oil win, closed on Marlar in heavy traffic with twelve laps scored. Junghans made the pass on Norris for second on lap 20. Marlar held steady in lapped traffic as Junghans and Norris could not get close enough in the waning laps to challenge for the win. Like Sheppard, the win also marked Marlar’s thirteenth career win with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. Marlar led every lap for his win. “Last night was a bummer when you get a good starting spot like that. It’s tough when you win a heat and get to start up front like we did. The car was something I could deal with today better than last night. It was definitely ‘elbows up’ early. Last year we had a real good shot for the win and a carburetor spring broke I think I was running second when it broke and I had to start lifting on the gas pedal.” Junghans was pleased with another runner-up finish. “The third times the charm, right? Mikey is hard to beat. I wish the track would have gotten a little wider for us. We still have a little bit of tuning on the car to do yet. But it’s really good right now. We just need to build off of last night and tonight.” Norris was thrilled with his podium finish. “Just to run with these guys is pretty awesome. The car was really good there. I thought we might actually have a shot at Mikey. The car got a little snug at the end there and that kind of played a factor. Congrats to him. We are glad to have two solid nights here.” The winner’s Ronnie Delk-owned, Rocket Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by: Marathon Oil, Mark Martin Timber and Farms, Franklin Enterprises, RS Equipment Sales and Rentals, Integra, VP Fuels, and Delk Equipment Sales. Completing the top ten were Rick Eckert, Ricky Weiss, Jared Landers, Josh Richards, and Darrell Lanigan. Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series

Bloomquist and Davenport Star at Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Ohio (August 22, 2019) – Scott Bloomquist and Jonathan Davenport claimed feature victories during Thursday night’s preliminary program for the 2nd annual Dirt Million – Presented by Arizona Sport Shirts. Bloomquist, a three-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion won the first 30-lap Duel of the night in the new format instituted for this year’s race. Davenport, the two-time and defending series champion held off a trio of drivers in a furious finish in the second 30-lap Duel. Both feature races went caution-free. Bloomquist took the lead at the start of the first feature and sprinted away to easily pick up the win. The win marks his all-time leading 95th Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series career win. Both Josh Richards and Brandon Sheppard tried to track down Bloomquist, but the boss of Team Zero went to Victory Lane for the first-time at Mansfield. With the win, Bloomquist cemented himself into Saturday’s 100-lap Dirt Million main event. Richards held off Sheppard to earn the runner-up spot with Michael Norris and Darrell Lanigan rounding out the top five. Bloomquist was elated in Lucas Oil Victory Lane: “The car has felt great after we found out what was wrong with it. We put in on a jig last week and it was pretty far off. We had a pretty good car last week at Batesville. I hope it feels as good here Saturday night. We hot lapped fast tonight, we qualified a little off, and we changed a few things that we didn’t like. I want to dedicate this race to Chris [Madden]. I hate it that he got hurt earlier in the week. He should be back in a few weeks.” “He [Bloomquist] was in a league of his own,” said the runner-up Richards. “There was one time we got caught up in lapped traffic that we were gaining on him just a little bit and that was only because of the lapped cars. We needed to be better. Me and Sheppard had a good race for second. We need to be a little better tomorrow night. This place has always been good to me.” The winner’s Scott Bloomquist Racing, Bloomquist Race Cars Chassis is powered by a Custom Race Engine and sponsored by: Great America Steak Company, STEEL-IT, Lucas Oil Products, Petroff Towing, Sorbera Chiropractic, VP Race Fuels, Penske Shocks. and Sweet Manufacturing. Completing the top ten were Dennis Erb Jr., Tim McCreadie, Tyler Erb, Gregg Satterlee, and Rick Eckert.

The second duel feature saw Davenport take the lead from Mike Marlar on lap five and hold off a trio of drivers before he could go to Victory Lane for the eleventh time this season with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. Davenport got caught up in lapped traffic and that allowed Chase Junghans, Bobby Pierce, and Ricky Weiss all to close on him in the final ten laps of the race. Junghans passed Weiss for second with four laps to go as Pierce followed topside two laps from the finish. As the four drivers came off of turn four Davenport had traffic on front of him, but he held off a furious charge from the other three competitors for the win. “I was hoping to see the checkered flag sooner. I was looking around and I couldn’t really tell if anybody was underneath me. I was trying the bottom and the top. They were two-wide in front of me. I couldn’t make the middle work like I could the bottom and the top. I saw Stormy [Scott] down there on the bottom and he was pretty good, so I just tried to stay focused on what I was doing.” Junghans came close to scoring his first career Lucas Oil victory with his runner-up finish after starting in sixth. “The only way we were going to win was if JD missed his marks. It was a hornet’s nest down there with those lapped cars. I felt good around the bottom in three and four. The track was great once it cleaned off. Hopefully we will get one spot better tomorrow night.” The winner’s Lance Landers Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by: Nutrien Ag Solutions, ASC Warranty, Penske Racing Shocks, Valvoline, Mega Plumbing of the Carolinas, Spartan Mowers, and Hawkeye Trucks. Completing the top ten were Dale McDowell, Hudson O’Neal, Steve Casebolt, Chris Ferguson, and Jimmy Owens. Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series

Madden Continues Hot Streak with Batesville Victory

LOCUST GROVE, Ark. (August 15, 2019) – Chris Madden continued his recent hot streak by winning Thursday night’s opener at Batesville Motor Speedway.

The win marks his third consecutive trip to Victory Lane in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series competition. Madden survived a battle with Brandon Overton to score the victory on night one of the COMP Cams Topless 100 – Presented by Nutrien Ag Solutions.

Madden was unchallenged other than when he slid up the track after a lap 19 restart and Overton forged ahead on lap 21. Overton slid up the track a lap later which allowed Madden to get back by him and go on for the victory, his 11th career Lucas Oil Late Model Late Model Dirt Series win.

Madden; the 44-year-old South Carolina native; started alongside polesitter Mike Marlar on the front row for the 30-lap main event. Madden bolted to the lead at the drop of the green with Marlar going to the second position. Those two were joined by Overton and Davenport in lapped traffic as a four-car battle for the race lead was developing until a caution for fifth-place running Tyler Erb slowed the field.

After losing the lead for just one lap, Madden managed to regain his momentum and powered his way to the victory. Overton crossed the finish line in second with Madden’s teammate, Scott Bloomquist finishing in third. Jimmy Owens and Jonathan Davenport completed the top five.

“We were bottoming out getting into one. We shoved the nose across the center, and we got hung up in the fluff,” said the winner talking about how Overton had gotten by him for the race lead. “It opened the door for Brandon. We gathered it back together and made a good corner in 3 and 4. Right now going through the race I am wondering what we are hurting in this race and what we need to maintenance the car for tomorrow night’s race. We don’t want something to bite us that we overlooked tonight for Saturday’s big race.”

“If the track stays like this for tomorrow night we definitely learned a lot. I think Mooney will work on it and get it ready for the rest of the weekend. It will be back to the old Batesville.”

Overton, who was seeking his fifth career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory was in the hunt the entire race. “As soon as he [Madden] pushed up the race track we were able to get by him. Then I went down there and did the same thing. I just got a little choppy and if you let it roll in there it would sit down for a little bit. Chris has the best car in the country right now so congratulations to him.”

Bloomquist ended up on the podium after starting in fifth. “Definitely this car is on track now. We can race now. I felt like we were holding our own out there. We might have to tweak it little bit more. We have got a different car under me now. It is great to see Chris winning. It’s great to know our cars are good right now. We just have to keep working hard and we will be fine.”

The winner’s Scott Bloomquist Racing, Bloomquist Race Car is powered by a Custom Race Engine and sponsored by Great America Steak Company, STEEL-IT, Lucas Oil Products, Sorbera Chiropractic, Petroff Towing, Crossfit by Overton, Sweet Manufacturing, VP Fuels, and Penske Shocks.

Completing the top ten were Josh Richards, Hudson O’Neal, Mike Marlar, Earl Pearson Jr., and Tony Jackson Jr.

Sanders sails to USMTS Victory at I-35 Speedway

Rodney Sanders rolled to his series-best seventh win of the season Wednesday as the I-35 Speedway hosted the 10th Annual USMTS Missouri Meltdown presented by MyRacePass.com.

The current points leader in the Casey’s General Stores USMTS National Championship, Sanders was patient while he battled with Ryan Gustin, Darron Fuqua, Zack VanderBeek and Terry Phillips for the first 30 circuits of the 40-lapper while Hunter Marriott set the pace from the start.

Five cautions slowed the main event—the last of which saw Gustin’s night end with another mechanical problem. Sanders was able to squeeze past Fuqua on the restart and then set his sights on the leader.

Marriott, of nearby Brookfield, Mo., competed at the track on a weekly basis early in his racing career and showed the fastest way around using the shortest way around the high-banked 3/8-mile dirt oval neat Winston, Mo., after earning the Sybesma Graphics Pole Award.

While Marriott remained married to the low groove, Sanders used every inch of the racetrack before settling on the middle and top grooves. He edged past Marriott at the flagstand as the lead duo completed lap 31, and then sailed away to score his 94th career USMTS victory.

The win was worth $2,500 to the 29-year-old from Happy, Texas, and padded his points lead in both the national standings and Casey’s ‘Hunt’ series. ‘The Sandman’ is in the driver’s seat to claim his third USMTS National Championship.

Marriott, who is on track to capture this year’s Grant Junghans USMTS Rookie of the Year Award, held off Phillips for second while VanderBeek and Dereck Ramirez rounded out the top five.

Fuqua, who challenged Marriott for the first half of the race, held on to finish sixth. I-35 Speedway USRA Modified points leader Dennis Elliott was seventh, Austin Siebert earned an eighth-place paycheck, Jimmy Ray traveled from Las Cruces, N.M., and scored a ninth-place result, and Tyler Davis completed the top ten.

#WelcomeHome: On Thursday, the USMTS will rock the Dallas County Speedway in Urbana, Mo., for the first time in the 21-year history of the series for the inaugural Bullring Bash. Full-blown Modifieds have not appeared at the track in more than 12 years, and the venue has never hosted a national touring event nor paid out a purse of this magnitude.

On most Friday nights, drivers arrive at the the quintessential hometown, grassroots racetrack just after punching the clock and strap into a Bomber, Pure Stock, Mini Stock or B-Mod. The Allen family has operated the track for more than 20 years and continue to make it a place for great weekly racing, and the quarter-mile oval never disappoints the passionate local fan base. Plus, the concession prices are almost too fair.

In addition to the hotly-contested USMTS ‘Hunt’ battle, Out-Pace USRA B-Mods will compete for national and points in the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series. Midwest Mods will complete the three-division card and both divisions feature great payouts and a chance to end the night in victory lane.

Event partners were quick to jump on board to support the first-time event. Each supporter is valued and appreciated. Bringing drivers, crews and race fans to Urbana would not be possible without the backing of 54 Buildings & More, Oak Star Bank, Hermitage Lumber, Loehr Construction, Robert Sawyer Agency, Big Surf Waterpark, Krystal’s Hair Studio, Eagle Machine, D & D Welding & Fabrication, St. Clair County State Bank, Scotty’s Signs & Wraps and Citizens Memorial Heatlhcare.

Despite being a school night, we welcome families to come out and enjoy this historic event. Big Surf Waterpark is giving away free admission to the waterpark for the first 100 kids age 10 and under. There will be activities for the kids and special back-to-school giveaways too.

Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating in the grass. Bill Allen is working tirelessly on the addition of a few hundred bleacher seats before race day so that there is room for everyone. There will be additional parking with staff helping to guide traffic. Fans will also be treated to the addition of some new LED lighting around the track.

Pit gates will open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5, hot laps begin at 7 and racing gets underway at 7:30. Tickets are $20 for adults (17-61) or just $15 for youth (12-16) and seniors 62 or older. Veterans and active duty military with ID also get in for $15. Kids 11 and under are free. Pit passes are $35.

Fans can pick up coupons good for $2 off adult admission at Casey’s General Stores locations in Bolivar, Buffalo, Camdenton, Hermitage, Weaubleau and Wheatland. To find the location nearest you, visit caseys.com.

Two-time USMTS National Champion Ryan Gustin will meet and greet fans at the Casey’s located at 812 S. Ash St. in Buffalo, Mo., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. While you’re there, get yourself a slice of delicious Casey’s pizza, meet the ‘The Reaper’ and see his No. 19R Spike Hardcore Energy USMTS Modified.

The Dallas County speedway is a semi-banked 1/4-mile dirt oval located 9 miles south of US 54 on US 65 (2876 US-65, Urbana, MO 65767). For more information, visit dallascountyspeedway.net.

On Friday, the series invades the Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo., in an event presented by PEM Racing Gears & Drivetrain, and the 96-hour grind wraps up Saturday at the Salina Highbanks Speedway in Pryor Creek, Okla., for the 7th Annual Salute to Veterans presented by Bryke Racing.

Ebert joins USMTS Winners Club with Ogilvie Triumph

Making it two straight first-time USMTS winners in as many nights, Dan Ebert out-dueled Rodney Sanders in a caution-free 40-lap nail-biter Saturday at the Ogilvie Raceway.

As has come to be expected at the Wagamon family’s 3/8-mile high-banked dirt oval in Ogilvie, Minn., the main event at this year’s 8th Annual Modified Madness presented by RacingJunk.com was another mind-blowing barn-burner that saw a home state racer fend off the Best of the Best in the dirt modified world.

Ebert, 31, was the fastest during hot laps early in the program and finished the night off the same way with a $3,000 victory in his home state. It was the first series win for the Lake Shore resident.

From the outside of the front row, Ebert immediately established himself as the pace-setter by quickly moving to the extreme high side of the track and laying claim to the thin strip of dark clay against the guardrail.

For the most part, Ebert remained faithful to the high line but heavy lapped traffic from lap 10 until the end. Only back-markers and a late-race slide-job on Sanders brought him off his preferred line.

Dereck Ramirez gave chase for the first half of the contest before relinquishing the position to Sanders on lap 22.

Sanders ran down Ebert and used two lapped cars to slip underneath and grab the lead on lap 34. The two made hard contact two laps later when Ebert ran out of real estate between the right side of Sanders’ car and the front-stretch wall.

The next time around, Ebert went to the inside of Sanders, slid up in front of him in turn 2 where they made contact, and then sped away to claim the checkered flag.

Sanders, who leads the Casey’s Hunt for the USMTS National Championship, held on for second ahead of Ramirez with Terry Phillips fourth and FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award winner Shane Sabraski finishing fifth after rolling off 40 laps earlier from the 15th slot.

Hunter Marriott, Landon Atkinson, Dave Cain, Zack VanderBeek and Cory Crapser completed the top 10.

A four-night swing Aug. 14-17 is up next with three stops in the Show-Me State and a final stop in Oklahoma.

On Wednesday, it’s the 10th Annual Missouri Meltdown presented by MyRacePass.com at the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo. On Thursday, the Dallas County Speedway in Urbana, Mo., hosts the USMTS for the first time for the inaugural Bullring Bash presented by Hooker Harness. On Friday, the 2nd Annual USMTS Event presented by PEM takes place at the Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo., and the 96-hour grind wraps up Saturday at the Salina Highbanks Speedway in Pryor Creek, Okla., for the 7th Annual Salute to Veterans presented by Bryke Racing.

Chris Madden Goes Back-to-Back at Florence Speedway

UNION, Ky. (August 10, 2019) – Chris Madden continued his recent hot-streak with a $50,000 victory in Saturday’s Sunoco Race Fuels North/South 100 – Presented by Lucas Oil at Florence Speedway.

Madden stormed from his tenth starting spot to sweep the weekend in front of the standing room only crowd. With his win, Madden became the seventh different driver to win the race in the last seven years.

Madden took the lead from Jimmy Owens on lap 76 and then went uncontested to score his eleventh career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory.

Hudson O’Neal tried to catch Madden in the final four green flag laps, but he had to settle for second with Owens finishing in third. Devin Moran came from the fourteenth starting position to take fourth as Zack Dohm passed seventeen cars to earn the Hard Charger of the Race and rounded out the top five at the stripe.

In a race that saw four lead changes among three drivers, Owens grabbed the lead at the start of the race and led the first eighteen circuits of the 100-lap event. Bobby Pierce then bolted to the point on lap 19. Owens regained the lead on lap 34 and held a comfortable margin for most of the race, until a caution for Bobby Pierce on lap 72.

When the race resumed, Owens and Madden had a side-by-side battle between the two veteran drivers for several laps, until Madden finally managed to take the lead for good on lap 76.

“We knew we had a chance to win tonight,” Madden commented in Victory Lane. “We just wanted to stay out of trouble and position ourselves in the top five by halfway; try to gain some positions on the restarts. At this place, you just kind of inch on a guy, you just really don’t pass him in one try.”

What an awesome racecar and an awesome team we have,” said the winner, who became the 25th different driver to win the event since it began in 1983. “Thanks to all of the fans for coming out this weekend. We appreciate it. Whenever we got into traffic, I knew I had a car capable of winning the race.”

O’Neal recorded his best career finish in the event as he earned a $20,000 payday for second. “We were really good around the bottom all night. We never gave up on it. A couple of times we got shuffled back to fourth or fifth. I tried to search around and find some different angles out there. All-in-all we were good all weekend, we just needed to be one position better in this race. Congrats to Chris, he drove a great race.”

Owens led 60 laps but fell short of becoming the first four-time winner of the event. “It’s really a racy track. You don’t know whether to go high or low or the middle, that’s why it’s a hard race to win. We were comfortable where we were running. The track just had more grip down on the bottom as the race went on and that is where Madden and those guys were running. Both Chris and Hudson have had a great car all weekend. I am happy to come in third behind those guys.”

Madden’s Scott Bloomquist Racing, Bloomquist Race Car is powered by a Custom Race Engine and sponsored by: Great America Steak Company, STEEL-IT, Lucas Oil Products, Sorbera Chiropractic, Sweet Manufacturing, Crossfit by Overton, VP Fuels, and Penske Shocks.

Completing the top ten were Tim McCreadie, Ricky Weiss, Kyle Strickler, Brandon Overton, and Scott Bloomquist.

In the $2,000-to-win non-qualifier’s race, former Florence Speedway track champion Jason Jameson took the lead from Frank Heckenast Jr. after a late race restart and pulled away for the victory. Heckenast finished in second, followed by Robby Hensley, Johnny Scott, and Billy Green.

Madden Scores First Florence Victory

UNION, Ky. (August 8, 2019) – Chris Madden found his way to Victory Lane on Thursday night in the Sunoco North/South Shootout at Florence Speedway.

The win marks the South Carolina native’s first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season and his first ever at Florence Speedway. Madden becomes the thirteenth different winner on the Series in 2019.

Madden started on the pole and faded as far back as fifth in the running order early in the race. Zack Dohm led the first fifteen laps of the 50-lap race before Owens charged to the lead on lap sixteen. Owens went on to hold a comfortable lead until contact with a lapped car sent him spinning out of the lead with 43 laps scored.

Madden inherited the top spot on the restart and pulled away from Tim McCreadie in the closing laps to pick up the win.

The defending North-South Shootout winner, Tim McCreadie, was second with Dohm registering his best career LOLMDS finish, in third place. Stormy Scott claimed the fourth spot ahead of Kent Robinson who rounded out the top five drivers.

In Lucas Oil Victory Lane, Madden was worried at the start of the race. “I went too far on my adjustments for sure. The first 20 laps, I wasn’t as comfortable as I should have been and then searched and found a line that was working. We just hustled the car and got back up there in the thick of things. I got back into second and then Jimmy had a lead on us. I hated to see that happen to him but am thankful for the win.”

“We have been really good in this car,” Madden added. “We now have two wins and a second-place finish. There are a lot of crown jewel races coming up. We got one last week at Cedar Lake and we hope to get one here on Saturday Night.”

“The track was really good tonight. There’s definitely going to be some awesome racing here the next two nights. I want to thank Cody Sommer and Scott [Bloomquist] for giving me this opportunity. Thanks to all of the fans for coming out and supporting us tonight,” said the 44-year-old Madden.

McCreadie came home in second. “This surface and the tire rule just suit me really well here. You just can’t run it through the middle, you just have to maneuver it. Jimmy was doing that; he was running half-way through the middle and then on the bottom. Chris was just a little bit better there at the end. We tried to run that top, but we just couldn’t make up much time on him.”

Dohm, whose father Tim owns one-career LOLMDS win, was looking for his first-ever series triumph. “We seem like we always run good here, but we never have started up front like we did tonight. I was a little shocked when I drove by Chris there at the start and I thought we were setting a pretty pace. I could feel the right rear tire getting hot and it was shoving the car across the track. Coming out of here with a third is awesome. It was just myself and my brother Nick, so we feel pretty good to run like we did against this caliber of competition.”

The winner’s Scott Bloomquist Racing, Bloomquist Race Cars chassis is powered by a Custom Race Engine and sponsored by: STELL-IT, Great America Steak Company, Petroff Towing, Lucas Oil Products, Sorbera Chiropractic, and Crossfit by Overton.

Completing the top ten were Dale McDowell, Jonathan Davenport, Hudson O’Neal, Tyler Ern, and Michael Norris.

David Whitener Takes Powell Memorial Victory At Volusia

BY JOE VANHOOSE – JULY 23, 2019

You can’t tell the story of the Powell Memorial without Mark Whitener.

Whitener, known as “The Magic Man,” rolled into Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida Saturday night looking to win Central Florida’s biggest Pro Dirt Late Model race for the fifth time – and the fourth time in a row.

At the end of the 67-lap feature, a Whitener climbed out of a black No. 5 car in victory lane. But this time, it was brother David Whitener jumping on the roof of his car and waving the checkered flag with gusto. Together, the Whitener Brothers from Middleburg, Florida led every lap of the Powell Memorial, but David led the last 50 circuits in a dominating performance.

“I won a Powell! Yeah!” David Whitener exclaimed in victory lane. “I tell you, this is the best race – this is the best race of the year. This is 100-percent the biggest win of my career!”

David Whitener led the 26-car field to the green flag, but Mark Whitener quickly moved up from his fourth-place starting spot to grab the lead on lap 10. But on a lap-17 restart, David Whitener banged doors with his brother and got the lead back, a lead that he would not relinquish.

For most of the race, it seemed that the Whiteners would finish 1-2, even as David Whitener continued to pull away from the field as he pushed the cushion of the track higher and higher, running closer to the outside wall than anyone on the half-mile clay track.

Considering that Mark Whitener, Jr. – “Lil Magic,” as the 16-year-old is known – had already won the 602 Late Model feature earlier in the evening, the Whitener family looked to have a dream night in hand as the main event progressed. Jason Fitzgerald gave chase to the brothers but could not overtake them. Powell Memorial past champion Ivedent Lloyd started and stayed near the front but suffered a mechanical failure on lap 57.

The late caution brought a new cast of contenders closer to the Whiteners, including Dalton Cook who had passed several cars on the very bottom of the race track to move up from ninth to third.

Cook tangled with Mark Whitener on the restart, the clash sending Whitener’s car spinning down the frontstretch and into the pit side wall. Officials sent Cook to the rear of the field, but not before Whitener spun his car toward Cook as the pack passed by under caution and ultimately retired to the pits – he finished 15th.

“(Dalton) could have calmed down on that restart there,” Mark Whitener said afterward. “I couldn’t believe it.”

On the final restart, David Whitener again broke free from his chasers and cruised to his first Powell Memorial win. Fitzgerald held onto second, with Trynt Lloyd – son of Ivedent Lloyd — finishing third in just his third pro late model start. Trey Pearson and Jamie Carter rounded out the top five, while Cook rallied back through the field to claim sixth.

Afterward, David Whitener was quick to thank his brother, who happens to be his car owner, who joined him after the win in the frontstretch celebration.

“My brother, he gives me a good ride and lets me race for him – our cars are badass,” David said, still excited.

“He was the class of the field tonight,” Mark Whitener said. “I’m glad his name gets to be on this trophy.”

“I’m glad my name gets to be on top of his,” David Whitener interjected. “This is such a good feeling. This is the best feeling in the world!”

Fans, Friends, Family Come Together

Even in the face of a rainy forecast and a brief interruption of a pesky Florida summer shower, race fans filled the grandstands at Volusia Speedway Park as race cars filled the pits. In all, 97 cars raced in the four divisions.

The $10,000 payday brought out many racers. But everyone came to support the family that has been connected with Central Florida motorsports for generations.

“It still gives you chills,” said James Powell III, who won his family’s race in 2003. “We all come out here and reminisce a little, cry a little and celebrate and go on about it.”

The race honors Powell’s his twin daughters, mother and father, aunt and uncle, who died in a plane crash in 1994. The Powell family owned Ocala Speedway in Central Florida for several years and were regularly the drivers to beat at Volusia.

On Saturday, Powell’s RV was parked outside turn 4, his shirt stained from pulling pork for a BBQ dinner with a long receiving line of family and friends.

“I grew up 10 miles from here – my dad raced here, my first race was here,” Powell said. “It’s just awesome how (track promoter) Tom Whipple and his team have gone above and beyond to elevate this event.

“I think it’s a testament to our family that we’re all still here having this race after 24 years, and it’s getting bigger.”
