Donny Schatz Pockets $40,000 with AGCO Jackson Nationals Win

JACKSON, MN – June 9, 2018 – When big money is on the line, Donny Schatz and the Tony Stewart Racing No.15 team find an extra gear and that was the case on the final night of the AGCO Jackson Nationals at Jackson Motorplex. Schatz came from seventh and prevented a Jason Johnson sweep of the weekend, overtaking the Eunice, LA native on Lap 18 to capture the $40,000 prize. Johnson was resilient but settled for second with Brian Brown completing the podium.

After winning the first two nights of the AGCO Jackson Nationals, Jason Johnson won the Sears Craftsman Dash, earning the pole for the 40-lap Feature.

The Feature got off to a bumpy start with Ian Madsen bicycling in turn one and coming to a stop with rear end damage. Jason Johnson got the jump on the start and led the opening two laps before the lone Red Flag on the evening flew after Daryn Pittman received contact while running in the top five and slowed significantly into turn one leaving Cory Eliason nowhere to go, ending both of their evenings.

On the ensuing restart, Donny Schatz charged up to second only to be negated by a caution for Brad Sweet, who came to a stop backwards in turn two while running third. Sweet was able to make repairs and return to the rear of the field.

When action resumed, Johnson continued to lead as Schatz disposed of Brian Brown for second and set his eyes on Johnson.

Johnson continued to set a torrid pace on the cushion and reached lapped traffic by Lap 8. The majority of the slower cars were on the cushion, slowing Johnson’s pace and allowing the Nine-Time Series Champion to close in. Schatz began reeling in Johnson and made his move underneath for the lead on Lap 18. Once he took command, it was clear Schatz was the class of the field.

The final caution of the night flew on Lap 24, bunching the field together, putting Johnson on Schatz bumper. Schatz motored away on the restart and was proficient in traffic.

Johnson stayed with Schatz as the duo navigated traffic as rubber became more prominent on the racing surface. Johnson took a brief look underneath Schatz entering turn one with less than 5 laps to go and continued to close back in, crossing the line .637 seconds behind the Fargo, ND driver.

Schatz, who described himself as non-existent during the first two nights, came into the evening 11th in Jackson Nationals points and started the Feature from 7th.

This race team is what the difference is,” Schatz said in Victory Lane when prompted about the improvement throughout the weekend. “We changed up a lot of little things and I felt as good as I have all weekend during Hot Laps tonight and it showed then and now,” Schatz added.

This is awesome. The improvements here to the facility, grandstands and racing surface are amazing,” Schatz said after the race.

Jason Johnson finished second in the big one but established a new level of speed for his team during the AGCO Jackson Nationals. “When it comes to big races, Donny isn’t going to make any mistakes. Hats off to the track crew all weekend dealing with all the rain and thanks to everyone in the stands for sticking it out,” Johnson said.

Brian Brown completed the podium and echoed both Schatz and Johnson’s statements about the job Jackson Motorplex did this weekend. “This is an awesome event, they gave us a great track all weekend. We were pretty good,” Brown said before thanking the large Jackson crowd.

David Gravel finished fourth with Logan Schuchart completing the top five. Dominic Scelzi scored KSE Hard Charger honors coming from the Last Chance Showdown to finish 14th, although it was Brad Sweet putting on the passing clinic, charging back to seventh after going to the rear on Lap 2.

BACON BURSTS TO VICTORY IN GRANDVIEW EASTERN STORM OPENER

Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania (June 13, 2018) Brady Bacon seems to have a flair for the dramatics every time he arrives at Grandview Speedway.

For the second-straight year, the two-time USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champ ran down the race leader on lap 38 of 40. Last year, C.J. Leary was the victim. This time, the target was Kevin Thomas, Jr., one of the hottest sprint car drivers in America at the moment. No small task to tackle by any means.

Akin to a buzzer beater at the end of a stick and ball sport, Bacon saved his most memorable shot for the end, staying loyal to his guns on the bottom of the one-third mile dirt oval to win Thursday night’s “Eastern Storm” opener for the second consecutive year.

Late-race heroics are always a joy to witness from the grandstand. And it’s certainly a joy to the one witnessing it through his own helmet visor as the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma native did – and he wouldn’t prefer it any other way.

“It actually makes it little more special,” Bacon said regarding the late-race pass for the lead. “It doesn’t sound that great if you start on the pole, lead every lap and win the race without any challenges. That’s an easy payday, but it gets your adrenaline pumping a little bit with the ups and downs. When you think you’re going to run second, but then you find something, get excited and make that finishing move that gets you to the lead and the win at the end. That gets your adrenaline pumping and makes it a little sweeter, especially when you beat someone as good as they are right now.”

As exciting as it was, perhaps it was more meaningful in the race that it came in. One year ago, Bacon’s Grandview victory was the first for the Dooling/Hayward Motorsports No. 63 team since the passing of Bryan Clauson. Yet, the race also carries the name of 2009 Grandview winner, Jesse Hockett. Someone who Bacon felt a kinship with as they raced sprint cars together from coast-to-coast.

“I was really close with Jesse,” Bacon remembers. “We had similar career paths. We ran a lot of non-wing, wing and 360 races together and became really good friends there when he had his accident. It’s definitely special to win anything with his name attached to it.”

Bacon started on the pole for the first of four 40-lap features on the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car calendar this season. Despite a track rework prior to the feature, the 2014 Eastern Storm champ wasn’t deterred from his plans set-up-wise on the Brady Bacon Racing/Imperial Wagyu Beef – Fatheadz Eyewear – Tel-Star/Triple X/Rider Chevy.

“We set it up pretty much the way we had it before the track prep because we knew it was going to go away,” Bacon recalls. “It actually lasted a lot longer than we thought. It definitely made for some good racing as it stayed faster and not quite so slow and slick at the end. Once it started cleaning off, we got to where we could move around the track a bit. Fortunately, I had a car good enough regardless of what it threw at us.”

However, the early-going was all Chad Boespflug as he pounced to the lead on the opening lap from the outside of the front row. Boespflug cut a rug in the middle lane to lead the first 12 circuits with Bacon staged a lane lower on the bottom rail a car length back.

By the 13th lap, the leaders were working to put a lap on the tail end of the field. As Boespflug drifted high to get around the lapped car of Carmen Perigo, Bacon stayed glued to the bottom, which paid off handsomely as he followed Perigo off turn four, then shot to the right-side pocket in front of Boespflug to grab a solid lead at the stripe.

Following a Justin Grant flip on the 16th lap, Thomas repeatedly wreaked havoc with Bacon’s lead up front, painting the outside wall with a pallet of brown dirt as he buzzed the outside of turn two on the 23rd lap, a move that very nearly paid off.

Thomas would apply layers of pressure on Bacon until lap 30 when he saw the door to the outside of Bacon swing wide open off turn two. Thomas took the welcome mat and slammed the door on Bacon, cutting down to the inside rail to steal Bacon’s line heading into the third turn.

The race appeared to be over. The race was in the refrigerator, the door was closed, the lights were out, the butter was getting hard, the eggs were cooling, and the Jell-O was jigglin’, to steal a line from Chick Hearn.

But, no! Thomas re-opened the door for Bacon with three laps remaining, drifting off the bottom to the middle of the track, allowing Bacon to scoot by on the bottom for the lead off turn four. Bacon dead-bolted the door and boarded it up with 2x4s on the final two circuits to secure his $6000 winner’s share ahead of Thomas, Chris Windom, KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Tyler Courtney and fast qualifier Jarett Andretti.

With the victory, Bacon moves into the top-25 on the all-time USAC National Sprint Car win list to equal Greg Weld and, ironically, Kevin Thomas, Jr.

“He was in a better position than me when he was behind me because he could move around and try some stuff,” Bacon explained. “I was stuck to the bottom unless someone proved me otherwise. (Thomas) got by me and he was actually pulling away a little bit. I moved around and found some stuff. We had our car set up pretty tight for the end of the race and once the track cleaned up and we got our tires hot, I moved up a little bit in three and four. When you’re running second, there’s nothing left to lose.”

Bloomquist Bags Sixth Show-Me 100

WHEATLAND, MO (May 26, 2018) – Scott Bloomquist took over the lead on lap 70 and never looked back en route to his sixth career Show-Me 100 on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Jimmy Owens held the point until contact with another car sent him spinning in turn four to bring out a caution flag. Owens then had to go to the tail-end of the lead lap. He later would drop out of the race for a disappointing 23rd-place finish.

Mike Marlar forged ahead in the final laps to register a third-place finish, followed by Bobby Pierce and Chris Simpson rounding out the top-five.

In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the third time this season, Bloomquist commented: “We weren’t as good as I wanted to be. Jimmy [Owens] was pretty good there. I really didn’t see exactly what happened to him. That was unfortunate for him. We were starting to put a little pressure on him. We were trying to find the groove that would work best. It probably would have been a good race at the end.”

“It’s always better with a clear view of the track. You really aren’t watching what he is doing. When you have a guy in front of you, you are always looking for a way around him. You have just got to keep on trying a different line. We could move around quite bit at the end of the race.”

Shirley celebrated his best-career, Show-Me 100 finish. “We were racing hard there with Jimmy and the lapped cars. When Scott is out front he is pretty hard to beat. All-in-all it was a good weekend for us. I can’t thank Bob and Lisa Cullen for all they do for me. Thanks to my wife and kids and my dad back home for watching on TV. We got one big one at Knoxville in the past and we are going to get us another one hopefully soon.”

Marlar was pleased with his podium finish. “This is a historical event. We started off the week a little rough when I got into the wall in qualifying. My crew went to work and fixed the car and overall it was a good weekend for us. I want to thank my car owner Ronnie Delk for all he does for us. Thanks to Rocket Chassis and Cornett Racing Engines. We’ll come back next year and try to get us a win.”

Nolen Racing’s Swanson Wins Little 500

ANDERSON, Ind., May 27 — After literally years of trying, team owner Gene Nolen of Greenwood, Ind. got his first victory in the biggest asphalt sprint car race in the world Saturday night when Kody Swanson drove one of his V6 Chevys to victory in the 70th annual Pay Less Supermarkets Little 500 presented by UAW GM at Anderson Speedway before a packed house.

To make the night even sweeter for the Little 500 Hall of Fame team owner, another Nolen Racing entry driven by Shane Hollingsworth of Lafayette, Ind., finished third for the Whiteland, Ind.-based team which is sponsored in part by KECO Coatings and Indy Race Parts and uses engines prepared by Bill Tranter of Franklin, Ind.

Swanson, a native of Kingsburg, Calif. who now lives in Zionsville, Ind., overcame a spin and came from two laps down to post a 2-second victory over Jacob Wilson of Crawfordsville, Ind., at the checkered to earn the $25,000 top prize from a $125,150 purse. The event is sanctioned by Must See Racing and the United States Speed Association (USSA).

Hollingsworth was one lap down at the end but four laps ahead of the fourth-place finisher, Mickey Kempgens. Scotty Hampton was fifth followed by Chris Windom, Brian Gerster, Caleb Armstrong, Kenny Schrader and Shane Cottle.

Thirty-three starters comprising the fastest field in the event’s history tackled the taunting task of completing 500 laps around the one-quarter mile oval while also having quick pit stops, since one stop in each half of the race is mandatory.

Swanson started fourth and Hollingsworth started tenth.

A third Nolen Racing entry driven by Jerry Coons Jr. of Greencastle, Ind., qualified eighth, but something broke on that car and it lost a wheel, forcing Coons to drop out with 108 laps compete for a 28th-place finish.

Hollingsworth took the lead around lap 243 after leader Aaron Pierce pitted under yellow and then dropped out with mechanical difficulties. Bobby Santos III was second and Swanson was third on the ensuing restart around lap 248, and around lap 285 Hollingsworth had a one-lap lead.

Around lap 300 Santos spun and hit the wall in Turn 2 to advance Swanson to second, but he was still one lap down. Hollingsworth pitted under that yellow around lap 302, which gave the lead to Swanson and put Hollingsworth back to fourth place, but Hollingsworth was able to work his way back to third by lap 330. By that time Wilson was second.

About 20 laps later Swanson had built up a six-second lead over Wilson, but Wilson consistently cut that gap down and by lap 370 Swanson’s lead was only 4.251 seconds.

Wilson used lapped traffic to take the lead from Swanson on lap 382. Hollingsworth was still third.

All was not well with Swanson, however. His tires weren’t as fresh as his rivals’ and his car was loose, and he spun by himself between Turns 1 and 2 on lap 411. Both he and Wilson pitted under that yellow, and two laps later Hollingsworth took the lead from Wilson while Swanson watched from third place, now two laps down.

Another yellow flew around lap 433 when Brian Gerster stopped on the backstretch. That helped Swanson get one lap back and put him on the same lap as Wilson, although Hollingsworth was still one lap ahead of both of them.

But Hollingsworth’s tires weren’t as fresh as Swanson’s or Wilson’s, and around lap 457 both Wilson and Swanson passed Hollingsworth to put the top three all on the same lap, although Hollingsworth still led.

Swanson passed Wilson for second around lap 470 with a move to the inside between Turns 1 and 2. He took the lead from Hollingsworth on lap 478 and Wilson came with him, and the trio finished in that order at the checkered for one of the most dramatic runs in Little 500 history.

Swanson set the second-fastest lap of the race on lap 448 with a time of 11.553 to polesitter Davey Hamilton Jr.’s fastest lap overall of 11.441 on lap five.

Coons had the seventh-fastest lap of the race on lap eight with a 11.718. Hollingsworth had the 11th-fastest lap of the race on lap six with a 11.786.

“We just didn’t give up,”?said Swanson, who also won this race in 2016. “We got loose and I?got tired, and did a spin. I messed up a little, but we never gave up. What an incredible team!?Everyone on the 20 and the 3 put everything into it.

“Shane did a great job; he’s like my brother; he doesn’t race much, but he put it on us, as did Jacob Wilson. I’m afraid if I?take a deep breath I’ll fall over!”

“Getting beaten by Kody Swanson is kind of common right now,” said Wilson, since this was Swanson’s third victory in as many nights. He also won two USAC?Silver Crown races on Thursday and Friday.

“This was by far our best total run,”?said Hollingsworth. “In the middle part of the race my car was a rocket ship. We had a great first stop. We tightened it up after the second stint and took a little too much stagger out, but I’m so happy to see two of Gene’s cars in the top three.”

“Yes, this was for Gene,”?the happy winner confirmed.

Bloomquist Masters Cowboy Classic

WHEATLAND, MO (May 24, 2018) – Scott Bloomquist led all 45 laps to win the 5th Annual Cowboy Classic on Thursday night at Lucas Oil Speedway. The 54-year-old three-time, Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Champion picked up his third series win of the season and the 596th of his career.

Bloomquist had to hold off current Lucas Oil MLRA points leader, Chad Simpson after a late-race caution for the victory. Hudson O’Neal finished in third followed by 16th starting Mike Marlar and 18th starting Brian Shirley.

Bloomquist took the lead at the start of the event. Jimmy Owens quickly moved into the second position. The two East Tennessee veterans then pulled away from a solid race for third between Hudson O’Neal, Mason Ziegler, and Chad Simpson. Owens closed an eight car-length gap between himself and Bloomquist to just two car-lengths as a caution came out on lap 26 for Jonathan Davenport.

On the ensuing restart, Bloomquist pulled away and O’Neal moved around Owens for second. Simpson, who started tenth, then moved into the third spot. Simpson then got around O’Neal for second before taking up the challenge of catching Bloomquist. Simpson managed to pull even with Bloomquist a few times in the final ten laps but could never get the momentum to clear him.

“The car was really good tonight, we have learned a lot of things about this track in the past and I think we might have finally solved some things. My daughter Ariel is here tonight. She asked me, ‘dad, are you ever going to win another race this year?’ We have had a lot of second place finishes. I told her I promise I am going to win another one,” said the winner in Lucas Oil Victory Lane.

“After that last caution I saw him [Simpson] down below there. I carried enough momentum there to keep him behind me. I kind of moved around a little bit and that helped. I did not want to block the bottom. Hopefully this is the start of a big weekend. I have never won the Show-Me here, so it would be nice to finally get that one here.”

Simpson posted an LOLMDS podium finish last week at Deer Creek Speedway in Minnesota and was happy with tonight’s run as well. “That last restart was really good for us. We keep gaining week after week. We ran well last weekend at Deer Creek against these guys. We have kept talking about changing things and we have finally hit on something. If Scott hadn’t moved down to the bottom, we could have had something for him. Great race for him. We’ve got a good race car. It’s a great start to the weekend, no doubt.”

O’Neal continues to make strides, recording his best career finish at Lucas Oil Speedway. “This is such a cool race track. Each time I come here, the racing keeps getting better. Hats off to Chad and Scott, they drove a heck of a race. I have a lot of guys behind me that do an amazing job,” said the driver of the Todd Burns-owned Dyno One, Sub-Surface of Indiana, Club 29 entry.

Late Pass Propels Pearson at 141 Speedway

MARIBEL, WI (May 18, 2018) – Earl Pearson Jr. made the leap into the infield pond on Friday night, a tradition for first-time winners at 141 Speedway.

Pearson, in the Ronnie Stuckey-owned, Lucas Oil Products, Black Diamond Chassis passed race-long leader Bobby Pierce on lap 44 and then sped on to win his second Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event on the season.

Pierce led the first 43 laps of the 50-lap main event until Pearson made his way underneath the 21-year-old driver of the Dunn Benson Ford, Campbell University, Rocket coming off of turn four. Pearson then quickly pulled away to claim his 34th career LOLMDS victory.

Hudson O’Neal’s Todd Burns-owned, Dyno One, Club 29 entry came home in third. Jimmy Mars gave his home state their best finish with a fourth-place run, in his career debut at the 141 Speedway. Darrell Lanigan came from 11th to finish in fifth.

Pierce grabbed the lead at the start of the race and was looking for his third win of the season. Pierce fought off the challenges of the younger O’Neal early on until he started to pull away. After a caution on lap 26, Pierce had to contend with O’Neal and Josh Richards in a side-by-side battle for several circuits. Pearson then began making his move on the leaders as he took second from O’Neal and started to track Pierce down. On several occasions, Pearson pulled to the rear quarter-panel of Pierce’s car but was only able to muscle his way around him with six laps to go.

“We got into lapped traffic and I don’t know if I could have done anything with him [Pierce]. We just rode around the bottom and you had to be patient. You just had to stay on those tires. He [Pierce] is one heck of a race-car driver. To run first and second tonight, this finish is for Carlton Lamm. I have a friend back home who is in pretty bad shape and this one’s for him as well,” said the 46-year-old veteran driver in Lucas Oil Victory Lane.

“I hope the fans saw one heck of a show tonight. It was pretty racy for the first time being here. I think we all learned what to do next time we are here at this track. We just took our time and made all the right moves. All the Dunn-Benson Team does a great job. Whether he won, or I won I know it was for Carlton.”

Pierce commented on his race as well, “We had a good car here tonight. I don’t know what happened, the longer the race went I got looser and looser. That turn three was actually kind of tricky a few times. You had to miss the corner to come off good. I missed it way too much there at the end. Congrats to Earl on the win.”

Hudson O’Neal, who started alongside his father, Don in row two, enjoyed a podium finish. “I was pretty good there early in the race. I stayed there with Bobby for the first 25 laps of the race and then Josh [Richards] got up there and we had a good race. Thanks to my crew for all of the hard-work they have done on this car. To get another podium finish is great for the team.”

Rounding out the top ten were Scott Bloomquist, Josh Richards, Don O’Neal, Cade Dillard, and Jonathan Davenport.

I-30 Speedway, Tri-State Speedway, Creek County Speedway up next for USMTS

LITTLE ROCK, Okla. (May 1)–The Best of the Best in dirt modified racing are back on the gas this weekend as the USMTS invades three race tracks in Arkansas and Oklahoma for a trio of blockbusters featuring both the USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup and Summit USMTS Southern Series.

Satisfy your need for speed when the demonic demons of dirt kick things off on Friday, May 4, for the long-awaited return to the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark. Then on Saturday, May 6, the mud-slinging monsters invade the mighty Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla., for a second round of massive motorsports mayhem. Then on Sunday, May 6, the USMTS titans head to the Creek County Speedway in Kellyville, Okla., for the first-time ever at the bad-ass bullring located just south of Tulsa.

This weekend’s shows will be the final two-headed monster awarding points in both the national and southern campaigns. After Sunday, the Summit USMTS Southern Series will be silent until the series finale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-3, for the inaugural Summit Racing Equipment USMTS Southern Nationals at the Kennedale Speedway Park in Kennedale, Texas.

In the USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup, two wins and ten top-10 finishes in eleven starts has Tucson’s Jake O’Neil atop the championship standings over Johnny Scott, Dereck Ramirez, Lucas Schott and Stormy Scott. Johnny Scott is out front in the Summit USMTS Southern Series, followed by two-time USMTS national champ Rodney Sanders, Ramirez, Stormy Scott and Joe Duvall.

Other top contenders expected this weekend include Zack VanderBeek, Terry Phillips, Jake Timm, Logan Robertson, Adam Kates, Carlos Ahumada Jr., Philip Houston, Chris Clark, Lance Mari, Billy Vogel, Cade Dillard, R.C. Whitwell, Zane Ferrell, Austin Bonner, Manuel Williams Sr. and Manuel Williams II, plus many more.

The party gets started on Friday, May 4, when the USMTS invades the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., for the first time since June 10, 2009. Jack Sullivan won the first of five events at the high-banked 1/4-mile clay oval back in 2005. Other former winners here include Mike Bowers, Michael Robertson, Johnny Bone Jr. and Steve Whiteaker Jr.

Gates open 5 p.m., hot laps start at 7:30 and racing begins at 8. Tickets are $20, kids ages 6-12 are just $2 and children under 6 get in for free. Pit passes are $35. On-track action will also feature Super Stocks and Mod-Lights.

The USMTS tackles the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla., on Saturday, May 5. Eddie Martin was the winner here when the series made their maiden voyage to the facility just across the border from Fort Smith, Ark., on June 3, 2008. In the three visits since then in 2009, 2010 and 2011, Jason Hughes was the winner.

Grandstand gates will swing open at 6 p.m. and racing will commence two hours later at 8 p.m. General admission spectator tickets are $20. Military veterans, law enforcements, seniors 65 and older and juniors ages 12-16 get in for $15. Kids under 12 are free. Pit passes are $35. Factory Stocks and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods will join the USMTS Modifieds on the card.

The Creek County Speedway was built in 1986, and for the first time on Sunday, May 6, the bullring that’s been delivering high-octane excitement to fans in the Tulsa, Okla., area will see the stars and cars of the biggest modified series on the planet.

Gates will open 5 p.m., hot laps hit the dirt at 6:30 and the first green flag gets unfurled at 7 p.m. General admission spectator tickets are $20, kids ages 8-14 are $10 and children under 8 get in for free. Pit passes are $35. The event will also feature the Lucas Oil National Open Wheel 600 Series with both Restricted and A-Class Micros in action.

PIERCE GOES BACK TO BACK IN ILLINOIS

MACON, IL (April 28, 2018) – Going back-to-back with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, Bobby Pierce fought his way to victory at Macon Speedway on Saturday night. Pierce held off a fiercely challenging Ryan Unzicker to win the St. Louis U-Pic-A-Part 100.

Unzicker briefly took the lead coming off of turn number four on lap 93, but Pierce battled back regaining the top spot a lap later. Pierce held off a furious charge from Unzicker on the final lap to score the win. Shannon Babb took third, as the home state drivers swept the top three finishers. Jonathan Davenport came home in third just ahead of Josh Richards, last year’s event winner.

In Lucas Oil Victory lane for the seventh time in his career, Pierce commented on his win. “Heading into the weekend I didn’t think I would win two races. If I did win one I thought it might be here. I got a little nervous there in traffic and then I hit the wall coming out of turn four. I think Big C was looking down on me after that. Man, I am glad to be back home. We go to so many tracks this year that I have never been to before. You have got to have laps at these tracks and fortunately the last two nights that was the case. There is nothing that compares to this track. Just glad to get these wins, thanks to all my crew, family and sponsors,” said the 21-year-old before an appreciative crowd.

Unzicker thrilled the crowd with his daring moves throughout the race. “I couldn’t beat him [Pierce] in a Pierce car and now I can’t in the Rocket he’s driving. He [Pierce] is a tough competitor. Glad to see him back here. He has a nice team there. We have been busting our tails in the garage and it paid off here tonight. This is one of my favorite tracks to run on. I feel like our programs been pretty good and the finish tonight just proves it.”

Babb was in the hunt the entire distance as he came home in third. “I felt like we had a pretty good car. I was just biding my time there. I just let the laps go by. Ryan was good on the restarts. We got into traffic and he [Unzicker] got by me. It was a really good race and to run good here it’s always nice to come home again.”

PIERCE SCORES EMOTIONAL TRI-CITY TRIUMPH

GRANITE CITY, IL (April 27, 2018) – Bobby Pierce scored his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season on Friday night at Tri-City Speedway. The 21-year-old returned to his home state for the first time this season and led all 50 laps on his way to win the RockAuto.com Busch 50 – presented by Campbell University. Pierce withstood a late-race challenge from Tim McCreadie to become the eighth different winner on the tour in 2018. McCreadie finished in second, followed by Jimmy Owens, Kyle Bronson, and Brian Shirley.

Pierce’s win came just one week after the Dunn Benson Motorsports patriarch and car owner, Carlton Lamm passed away. Joined by his team and family, an emotional victory lane took place after claiming his sixth career LOLMDS win.

After tonight’s win, Pierce moves to sixth in the championship standings on his first full-year on the LOLMDS tour. “When you race on the Lucas Oil Series, these guys are the best there is. I really wanted to get that win for Big C. I know he’s up there watching. Just a big thanks to everyone, especially my crew they have worked so hard. It’s been a week to 10 days. Thanks for my sponsors for sticking with me, and thanks to all the fans for coming out tonight.”

Pierce dominated most of the race, which saw only one caution flag in the early stages. Over the last half of the race, Pierce battle fiercely with lapped traffic, which allowed several drivers to close the gap on him. Bronson took a shot at the top groove but lost two spots as McCreadie and Owens moved by him. McCreadie then closed in on Pierce, but could not get by as Pierce held his groove on the bottom of the track. McCreadie had one last chance heading to the checkered flag as Pierce drifted up ever so slightly coming off of turn four, but Pierce had enough momentum to take the win.

“It seems like that was the longest race I have ever run,” said the winner afterwards. “I kind of wanted a caution towards the end to clear out the track. I didn’t think anyone would have a chance to pass me on the outside. My experience here at this track was crucial; sometimes it all comes down to qualifying. That’s where a lot of races are won or lost. After hot laps I was a little bit worried. I went out there and qualified by setting fast time. Starting up front was better than starting in the second row.”

McCreadie’s Sweeteners Plus, Longhorn recorded its best series finish of the year as he continues to make gains in the championship point standings. “We have had a really good car lately. I tried to make the cushion work early on, but it was going away quickly. I wish I had gotten to second about ten laps earlier, and then I think I would have had a better shot at him [Pierce].”

Jimmy Owens’ Ramirez Motorsports, E3 Spark Plugs, Rocket took a podium finish coming home in third place. “Our car wouldn’t fire early on, but after that one caution it seemed to go a lot better. We got up to third and pretty much rode it out from there. We had some tough luck last weekend, but it feels good to get a good finish tonight,” said the three-time series champion.

Schott Puts Enid Speedway in USMTS Win Column

ENID, Okla. (April 29)–Lucas Schott sailed into USMTS victory lane on a windy Sunday at the Enid Speedway, leading all 35 laps of the main event to notch his second win of the weekend and seventh of his career.

From the pole, Schott remained in command despite early pressure from Johnny Scott and a late-race charge from Ryan Gustin, who narrowed the gap between himself and the leader from ten to two car-lengths over the final five laps.

Although Schott walked away with the $2,825 winner’s share of the prize money, it was a return to form for ‘The Reaper’ as he has endured mechanical woes during the early parts of the 2018 campaign.

Dereck Ramirez came on strong at the end as well, stealing fourth away from Scott in the final stages of the contest while Saturday’s winner, Rodney Sanders, came from the 13th starting spot to claim fifth.

USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup points leader Jake O’Neil was sixth, Stormy Scott wound up seventh, Zack VanderBeek earned an eighth-place paycheck, Tyler Wolff nabbed ninth and Chad Wheeler rounded out the top ten.

The tireless USMTS titans are back at it next week, May 4-6, for another blockbuster tripleheader that begins on Friday at the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., and then moves to the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla., on Saturday before making their first-ever trip to the Creek County Speedway in Kellyville, Okla., on Sunday.
