Late Pass Propels Pearson at 141 Speedway

MARIBEL, WI (May 18, 2018) – Earl Pearson Jr. made the leap into the infield pond on Friday night, a tradition for first-time winners at 141 Speedway.

Pearson, in the Ronnie Stuckey-owned, Lucas Oil Products, Black Diamond Chassis passed race-long leader Bobby Pierce on lap 44 and then sped on to win his second Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event on the season.

Pierce led the first 43 laps of the 50-lap main event until Pearson made his way underneath the 21-year-old driver of the Dunn Benson Ford, Campbell University, Rocket coming off of turn four. Pearson then quickly pulled away to claim his 34th career LOLMDS victory.

Hudson O’Neal’s Todd Burns-owned, Dyno One, Club 29 entry came home in third. Jimmy Mars gave his home state their best finish with a fourth-place run, in his career debut at the 141 Speedway. Darrell Lanigan came from 11th to finish in fifth.

Pierce grabbed the lead at the start of the race and was looking for his third win of the season. Pierce fought off the challenges of the younger O’Neal early on until he started to pull away. After a caution on lap 26, Pierce had to contend with O’Neal and Josh Richards in a side-by-side battle for several circuits. Pearson then began making his move on the leaders as he took second from O’Neal and started to track Pierce down. On several occasions, Pearson pulled to the rear quarter-panel of Pierce’s car but was only able to muscle his way around him with six laps to go.

“We got into lapped traffic and I don’t know if I could have done anything with him [Pierce]. We just rode around the bottom and you had to be patient. You just had to stay on those tires. He [Pierce] is one heck of a race-car driver. To run first and second tonight, this finish is for Carlton Lamm. I have a friend back home who is in pretty bad shape and this one’s for him as well,” said the 46-year-old veteran driver in Lucas Oil Victory Lane.

“I hope the fans saw one heck of a show tonight. It was pretty racy for the first time being here. I think we all learned what to do next time we are here at this track. We just took our time and made all the right moves. All the Dunn-Benson Team does a great job. Whether he won, or I won I know it was for Carlton.”

Pierce commented on his race as well, “We had a good car here tonight. I don’t know what happened, the longer the race went I got looser and looser. That turn three was actually kind of tricky a few times. You had to miss the corner to come off good. I missed it way too much there at the end. Congrats to Earl on the win.”

Hudson O’Neal, who started alongside his father, Don in row two, enjoyed a podium finish. “I was pretty good there early in the race. I stayed there with Bobby for the first 25 laps of the race and then Josh [Richards] got up there and we had a good race. Thanks to my crew for all of the hard-work they have done on this car. To get another podium finish is great for the team.”

Rounding out the top ten were Scott Bloomquist, Josh Richards, Don O’Neal, Cade Dillard, and Jonathan Davenport.

Nolen Racing’s Windom Fourth, Coons Seventh at Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE, Ind., April 30 — The 18th annual Sumar Classic USAC Silver Crown race Sunday night at the Terre Haute Action Track was a rollercoaster ride for Nolen Racing’s two drivers. In the end Chris Windom finished fourth for the Whiteland, Ind.-based team in a borrowed car. Jerry Coons Jr. qualified second out of 29 entries, led 10 laps, was in the top three or top five for almost all of the race, and ended up seventh.

Windom was very conservative during the bulk of the race, but came on like gangbusters at the end. Coons was in contention for at least a podium finish most of the race, but dropped back at the end due to brake issues that forced him to alter his entry into the turns and ultimately caused a tire problem.

Windom had just set the second-fastest lap of his group in the final practice session when the brand-new engine in the Nolen Racing Maxim No. 17 sponsored by KECO Coatings and Indy Race Parts blew in Turn 4. An arrangement was quickly made for Windom to hop in Bill Rose’s No. 66 for the rest of the evening. Despite never having driven that car before, Windom qualified 13th at 24.289 seconds with a hastily lettered 17 added to the white 66, and he started 13th in the 25-car 100-lapper on the half-mile dirt oval. He also received a contingency award from Roger and Barb Tapy for being the lucky 13th qualifier.

Once the race started, Windom, of St. Louis, had already advanced to eighth by lap two. The defending race winner was seventh by lap six, and he stayed just out of the top five for most of the first half of the race, primarily running in seventh. He was ninth at the halfway point and tenth a lap later, saving his tires, but he was back in seventh by lap 54.

He was eighth with 25 laps remaining, but he moved into sixth with 83 laps down when leader Kody Swanson and the driver who was third, Shane Cottle, came together between Turns 3 and 4. Cottle stopped on the track and was done for the night. Swanson had to pit to replace a flat tire, and restarted at the rear.

Windom cracked the top five for the first time on the restart on lap 84 by passing Shane Cockrum. He fell back to sixth on lap 88 when Swanson passed him, and he was still in sixth place on lap 97. He passed his teammate, Coons, for fifth on lap 98 and then C.J. Leary for fourth on lap 99 to bring it home in that position, trailing only winner Justin Grant; Swanson, who regrouped for second, and polesitter Tyler Courtney. Windom was 3.766 seconds behind Courtney and 2.249 seconds ahead of the fifth-place finisher, Leary, at the end.

Coons, a native of Tucson, Ariz., now living in Greencastle, Ind., qualified second with a sizzling 23.004 to Courtney’s 22.990 with the Nolen No. 20 Maxim. He blasted off at the green and passed Courtney for the lead with an outside move in Turn 2 on the first lap, right before Brady Bacon brought out the first full-course caution on lap two. Coons led the first 10 laps, but then Leary passed him in Turn 2 on a restart to push him back to second. Grant slipped by to the outside on lap 13 to push Coons back to third, and then Cottle wiggled by on lap 14 to relegate Coons to fourth.

Coons stayed in fourth place through lap 51, dicing repeatedly with Cottle in a fight for third in one of the best battles of the race as the field approached the halfway mark. Cottle moved into second on lap 48 and Coons then attacked Leary for third. He got the spot on lap 52 when both he and Swanson passed Leary.

Two laps later Coons was back in second when he passed Cottle. He remained in second place until Cottle got him back in Turn 3 on lap 65 on a restart. Coons stayed in third place from that point until Swanson passed him on lap 72, and he ran in fourth from lap 72 until he advanced back to third after the Swanson-Cottle incident with 83 laps down.

He had been dealing with the brake issue for some time, however, and it took a toll on his car’s tires. Courtney passed him for third with 10 laps to go, and Swanson pushed him back to fifth on the following lap.

It still looked like Coons would get a top-five finish, but with two laps to go Windom passed him to push him back to sixth, and Cockrum got by on the last lap to relegate Coons to seventh. Coons was just 0.600 of a second behind Cockrum at the checkered, and a full lap ahead of the eighth-place finisher, Joe Liguori.

Windom set his fastest lap of the race on lap 90 with a 23.031, which was the fifth-fastest lap of the race. Coons’ best lap was lap 83 in 23.211, which was the sixth-fastest lap of the race.

Windom is now third in the point standings and Coons is fourth. The next race, the Hemelgarn Racing/Super Fitness “Rollie Beale Classic,” is this coming Friday, May 4, at Toledo Speedway in Toledo, Ohio.

The team’s complete schedule can be found on its Web site at nolenracing.com and its Facebook page. It’s also on Twitter. For information on marketing partnerships, contact Restart Communications at LKMRestart@gmail.com. USAC’s Web site is at usacracing.com.

Post-race quotes follow:

Chris Windom: “The engine let go in the 17 with no warning. I want to thank everyone on my team and Bill Rose for letting me jump in his ride for the race.

“I was very conservative, and just tried not to go a lap down during most of the race. I was trying to save my tires for the end. So to get a fourth out of it in a car I never sat in before, I’ll take it.”

Jerry Coons Jr.: “For some reason we’ve had some issues with our brakes on half-mile tracks. Eventually I just had to slide on entry; I couldn’t get into the corners right due to the problem with the brakes, and I just wore down the tires. I was waiting for a tire to blow; one of them in particular was really bad at the end. At one point the vibration was so bad on the backstretch that it shook the whole car so badly I couldn’t even see. We’ll have to see what we can do to solve that brake problem for the future.”

Strong Field Invades the Buckeye State to Kick off 24th Season of Sunoco American Late Model Series

ROSSBURG, OH — Apr. 28, 2018 — The Sunoco American Late Model Series kicked off its 24th season of racing on the biggest stage in all of dirt track racing. The famed ½ (0.500)-mile high-banked dirt oval of Eldora Speedway (OH), located just east of the Indiana/Ohio state line in Rossburg, OH was the site for the 2018 season opener, the $5,000-to-win Late Model LidLifter. This event was the first of four appearances of the season at Eldora and 88th all-time event at the Buckeye State oval, the most of any track in the 23-year history of the series.

When the checkered flag flew, Nick Hoffman was the surprised winner in Victory Lane after flagged winner Jason Jameson crossed the scales light by just four pounds. “I wasn’t expecting that at all. I was happy to finish second after the great battle him and I had,“ explained the soon to be 26-year-old (on May 1st) after climbing from his #2 Propane Direct / Rocket XR1 machine. “It was a battle to start 10th in this field and work our way up to have a chance to win this. I hate to win that way, but we did have a helluva hot rod tonight,” added the Belleville, IL driver who now calls Mooresville, NC home.

The 407th all-time event in series history would see three-time DIRTcar Modified National Champion Devin Gilpin and Jameson lead the field to the green flag for the 25-lap feature. Gilpin would beat Jameson to the first corner to grab the early lead while the rest of the pack jockeyed for position behind them. After a caution on lap nine, the restart would see Jameson shoot out ahead of Gilpin to take over the top spot and try to pull away from the rest of the field.

At the halfway mark, Hoffman, who started 10th, had worked his way up to fourth and with 10 laps to go, disposed of 1997 Dirt Late Model Dream winner, Jimmy Mars and then Gilpin to take over second with six laps to go. He set his sights on Jameson and the battle was on for the lead. Hoffman tried high and low to get past Jameson, but it wasn’t enough as Jameson would see the checkered flag first, only to lose the victory by being light at the scales by just four pounds.

Gilpin would take second in the final rundown with Mars completing the podium finishers in third. 19-year-old Kody Evans scored an impressive fourth showing ahead of three-time and defending series champion, Jon Henry, who would finish off the top five. Two-time and defending DIRTcar Super Late Model National Champion, Rusty Schlenk finished sixth as Dustin Nobbe, defending track champion, Kent Robinson, five-time track champion, Matt Miller and Rob Anderzack were the final top 10. Earlier in the afternoon, Jameson picked up the Fast Qualifier honors over the 24-car field with a 15.510 = 116.054mph and he also won his Heat Race. Devin Gilpin and Kody Evans also scored Heat Race victories.

Eldora Speedway will host the Sunoco American Late Model Series three more times in 2018 starting with the traditional Memorial Day Holiday Weekend event, the 48th running of the Johnny Appleseed Classic on Sunday, May 27th. This race is the final opportunity for teams to get all important track time in preparation for the 24th running of the Dirt Late Model Dream on June 7-9th. The traditional Labor Day Holiday Weekend event, the 11th annual Earl Baltes Classic is on Sunday, September 2nd. The Baltes Classic is the last chance for teams to tune up for the 48th annual World 100 the following week on September 6-7-8th. The final appearance of the season is also the final race of the year for the series on Saturday, October 13th as part of the tracks Last Call For Them All weekend.

The Sunoco American Late Model Series will head west for the next two shows and both races will be co-sanctioned with the MARS Super Late Model Series. On Friday, May 10th, Farmer City Raceway (IL) will host the 2nd annual Farmer City 74 which will pay $10,000 to the winner. Then the next night, Saturday, May 11th, the teams venture just 40 miles south to Fairbury American Legion Speedway (IL) for the 4th annual #FALS Frenzy, which also pays a cool $10,000 to win.

For more information about the remainder of the 2018 racing season within the Sunoco American Late Model Series, visit the series website. You can also follow the series on all Social Media outlets on Facebook and Twitter via the DIRTcar Racing pages using the hashtag #SunocoALMS or #ALMS.
