Skies Part For the Sportsman Spectacular At VSP

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- The racers, fans, and staff, at Volusia Speedway Park spent the better part of Saturday afternoon anxiously watching as huge thunderstorms all but surrounded the area, some dropping heavy rain within a mile of the facility.  Thanks to a steady onshore wind that kept the heavy weather to the south and west of the track, and despite a persistent sprinkle or two that failed to get anything wet early on, racing went on as scheduled.  That cleared the way for fans to see the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Spectacular, plus action from the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and the UMP 4 Cylinder Challengers.

The one downside to the night was an incident during heat racing, involving Rickie Lara’s Thunder Stock car.  Lara bounced off of another car in turn three, then slid almost head on into the inside barrier in turn four.  While the impact did not appear to be any more severe than a good jolt, Lara exhibited symptoms that caused Volusia Speedway’s Rescue crews to take extra precautions while extricating the driver from the wrecked car, which created a lengthy red flag period.  Lara was transported for further examination and testing, and no updated condition report is available at this time.

The Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Spectacular dangled a $1200 cash carrot in front of seventeen talented racers who were willing to battle for 30 laps to get it, and the first part of the event featured a drag race between Stanton Mills and Aaron Barsness.  Barsness took a liking to the outside line while Mills stuck to the bottom, and lap after lap they battled side by side while Danny Vogel sometimes muscled his way into the fray to make it three wide.  Running the outside finally drained some of the handling from Barsness’ machine later in the race as the heat of the battle took its toll, as Vogel began using the same outside line to keep things close.  But in the end Stanton Mills prevailed and collected the big check, while Aaron Barsness settled for second and Danny Vogel followed in third place.  Shaun Daugherty gained five positions during the race to claim fourth place, while David Clegg rounded out the top five.

Matt Hartley has been absent from racing with the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models this season.  Hartley suffered a broken leg that required extended rehabilitation, but finally has healed enough to get back into a race car and make a comeback.  But standing in his way was Donnie Chappell, who has been making a comeback of his own after mechanical issues early in the season slowed his car, and looking at the earlier heat races it appeared that Chappell might just walk away with an easy victory.  Bum leg or not, Hartley was not impressed.

The race may have been one of the best of the season so far, as battles erupted between virtually every car in the top seven or eight throughout the race.  Donnie Chappell grabbed the early lead, but had it yanked away by Matt Hartley on lap 9.  Meanwhile David Clegg had forced his way to fourth place while Joe Kump and young Christian Augspurger maintained a multi lap, side-by-side matchup for third place that eventually went to the veteran driver.  Jack Nosbisch was not satisfied to be a follower either, wrestling the fifth place spot away from Lawton Minchew and setting his sights on fourth place.  And as those battles played out behind the leaders, Hartley took advantage of a small blunder by Chappell to get position under him and retake the lead on lap 21.

The only thing that put a stop to the multiple car free-for-all in this race was the checkered flags, as Matt Hartley held on the complete his triumphant comeback to VSP.  Donnie Chappell fought tooth and nail with him for the entire race, but came away in second place.  Joe Kump had to fend off a late charge from David Clegg to take third place and Clegg settled for fourth, followed by Jack Nosbisch in the fifth spot.

In recent years the man at the top of the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks has been Grady Christian, but the yellow number 36 machine has been a rare sight at VSP in 2010.  Yet fans know that if Grady christian is in the race, that he is going to go to the front, and probably sooner than later.  Phillip Brown held the early lead in the race, but “Shady” Grady positioned himself in second place and had the 13 car in his crosshairs when a restart on lap 7 caused Brown to leave the back door cracked open just enough for Christian’s foot to get in.  Grady Christian battled his way past Brown over the next three laps and held on for a win, while Phillip Brown had to fight off Grady’s nephew in order to salvage second place.  Bubba Christian nabbed third place, while Tim Hughes and Mick Kulak rounded out the top five.

Another feature race that provided a heated battle for the lead came courtesy of the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks.  Scott Mooers may be in a league of his own, but someone forgot to inform Chad Scranton that Mooers is untouchable. Scranton proceeded to fight off every effort that Mooers could produce in order to seal a win for the East Palatka driver, and the fans in the grandstand apparently enjoyed watching Mooers take one on the chin as they were on their feet as Scranton blazed under the checkers with Mooers hot on his trail.  Tom Hughes battled to a third place finish, while David Whitt placed fourth and Donnie Nobles claimed the fifth spot.

Tony Laporta may have been a little slow getting out of the starting blocks this racing season, as the defending UMP 4 Cylinder Challenger Champion at VSP was sidelined by mechanical issues, but now that he is back it is likely that some of his competitors are secretly wishing that something else might break on the 3T machine.  Laporta took control on Saturday night and made it look easy, as he notched yet another victory and left the rest of the field to squabble over what was left to claim.  That win collected the $100 cash bonus from Astor Recycling for Laporta, plus gave him some more hardware to take up what shelf space may be left at home.

While Laporta was leading the way, a lot of racing was going on behind him.  Jordan Myers ended up starting the race dead last in the 21st position, but used patience and skill to make his way to a 10th place finish, a gain of 11 spots.  Harold Lewis and Casey Feaster were the strongest two cars behind Laporta, but Lewis managed to keep Feaster in check when it counted and claimed second place, while Feaster came home third.  Steven Cox hung on and grabbed a fourth pace finish while Larry Langston overcame some beating and banging during the race to finish fifth.

Next Saturday, June 5th, the Budweiser Modifieds will step into the spotlight as yet another cash carrot gets tied onto the string and dangled in front of the field.  $1200 will go to the winner of Modified Mania at Volusia Speedway Park, plus race fans will see action from the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and the UMP Challengers.  For more information, visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.

Rogers tops Bright House, Clouser wins E-Mods at New Smyrna Speedway

New Smyrna Speedway – May 29th 2010

by Andy Sandall, FASCAR Media

The Bright House Challenge Series for Super Late Models was the headliner at New Smyrna Speedway on Saturday night as the fans made their way out to the track to celebrate Memorial Day weekend. There was plenty of action in the other divisions, including local favorite Cody Blair making an attempt to take down wins in four separate divisions, and the night would end in the most fitting way possible with an active servicewoman taking down the win to close the night’s racing.

The first feature of the night saw the E-Modifieds joined by a pair of recent Sportsman winners in the shape of #23 Mike Pletka and #27 Phil Luizzo as these two divisions ran a combined race. The race at the front would be dominated by #15 Cody Blair, making his first appearance of his scheduled four that night, and #6 Rich Clouser, getting an early taste of the track before heading back out in his Super Late Model. Blair would take the early lead and leave Clouser in his wake before the #6 was back on his rear bumper and looking for a way underneath.

The halfway point was soon reached with Blair blocking every attempt by Clouser to find a way past, but the race took a decisive turn as Blair came around turn 4 looking visibly loose, having to catch his car and slow as he slid around and back onto the front straight. Clouser instantly capitalized to power down the inside and set off to put some distance between himself and 2nd place. Soon it was obvious that Blair was fighting a seriously unsettled car in every corner. Thanks to the distance the leaders had put between themselves and the field in the opening laps Blair was able to come home in 2nd place behind Clouser, as Pletka led Luizzo home in the Sportsman race out on track at the same time. Little did Blair realize that this disappointing run would actually turn out to be the high point of a disastrous night for him.

Next up on the schedule was the much anticipated Pro Truck feature, coming just a week after a controversial race that saw young rivals #20 Anthony Sergi and #24 Bruce Bennett come together towards the end of the race, finishing Sergi’s race prematurely and that ended with a two-day technical inspection for Bennett before the result could be officially confirmed. Naturally the starting position draw put Sergi on outside pole with Bennett directly behind him, but before the race could start the drama began as #15 Cody Blair saw his night quickly go from bad to worse with mechanical issues on the warm-up laps that saw him heading back to the pits, unable to get back out and take up his place in the line-up.

Right from the off it was Sergi and Bennett who raced up to the front, both using the high line to their advantage to move around pole-sitter #7 Thomas Warnick and Bennet’s fellow 2nd row starter #8 Bobby Kennedy. Sergi and Bennett would waste no time in pulling away and restarting last week’s epic battle, but coming with them would be #28 T.J. Duke who was determined to prove that this was no two-horse race. Soon the race was hitting a rhythm that saw Sergi comfortably running in the fast high groove, but sitting with enough track underneath him to encourage Bennett to look low and see if he could squeeze his way through. Bennett would look with every turn, but Sergi kept cranking up the laps and was showing no sign of letting go of his lead.

Soon Bennett would start to pull alongside, and the cars began to race door-to-door with Dukes clamped right on the two leader’s tails. Sergi would just keep his nose ahead and his faith in the higher line and his truck’s speed was rewarded as the two reached the halfway mark with Bennett still unable to get underneath and snatch the lead from Sergi’s hands. The tension would quickly be broken when #10 Blake Suttie span in turn 4 to bring out the first caution of the night. It would take two attempts to get back underway as Sergi won the first psychological battle of the race by forcing Bennett into making a horrendous false start that saw him warned from the flagstand, having jumped way back in turn 3 under the pressure to make this restart count.

Sergi would time his restart perfectly to pull ahead of Bennett and get himself back onto his favored line to build himself the biggest lead he had enjoyed so far. Bennett would work his way back and again place himself right on the inside rear quarter of Sergi’s truck, but with laps counting down he now needed to make a move and prove he had the speed to get to the front. His tactic was to run hot into turn 3 and try to power his way underneath to the lead, but he would find Sergi’s determination unbreakable as each time Sergi resolutely held onto his favored line, knowing he had to pace to pull away out of turn 4 and be back in front by the straight.

Finally Bennett had just one lap left and again ran as hard as he could into turn 3 and under the leader’s car, but once more Sergi held his line, put his foot on the gas and powered out of the turn to take the win by a car length. Duke would be rewarded for his patient race with a well-deserved 3rd place ahead of #10 Blake Suttie, but it was the young drivers ahead of him that would take all the plaudits. After such an acrimonious end to the previous week’s race it was to both Sergi and Bennett’s credit that they came back out and put on a tremendous race that was both hard fought but totally clean and that saw both drivers thoroughly deserve the applause the received from the fans.

The Pro Truck race proved a perfect appetizer for the Bright House Challenge Series race that was to follow, as a field of Super Late Models made their way out onto the track to do battle. The fast qualifier in afternoon practice was #9 Rich Clouser, doubling up after his early win in the E-Modifieds, but the draw for inversion saw him demoted back down to 9th place. This would put #34 Shaughn McCormick up at the front alongside #127 Brandon Booth and leave pre-race favorite #11 David Rogers handily placed on the 2nd row.

From the start the initiative would be taken by Booth as he moved out to the front, but Rogers would find himself blocked and stranded on the high line behind McCormick, allowing #96 Ben Kennedy through to set off in pursuit of the leader. The lead group would close together again as Rogers settled in behind Kennedy, leaving McCormick to fend off the attacks from behind by #64 Joe Winchell, Clouser and #33 Gary Fountain. Quickly Rogers found his way underneath with a powerful pass heading into turn 1 to take 2nd place, but the cars would be slowed down behind the pace truck as Fountain got into trouble coming out of turn 4, turning around down the front straight and heading backwards into the pit-lane wall. A broken rear-end was the diagnosis, and Fountain was soon back in the pits with his racing over for the night.

Booth knew the restart would be crucial, but with such experience and talent around him it was no surprise when the green flag waved that Rogers was quickly around him into the lead, bringing Clouser through for company. By the next lap Booth had dropped even further back as Kennedy and Winchell demoted him to 5th in their chase for the lead. Rogers and Clouser would put some distance between themselves and the field, and the race soon resembled the earlier truck race as Rogers sat comfortably on the higher line, keeping ahead of Clouser’s low runs into the turns.

But with Rogers seemingly in control the race turned on its head when he inexplicably ran high in turn 2 to let Clouser through, and began to visibly slow. His was left thanking #05 David LeBeau for saving his race as the back-marker span in turn 3 to bring out the caution flag, leading to a lengthy clean-up for dropped fluids that gave Rogers time to head back to the pits for a tire check and adjustments to correct whatever had forced him briefly off the pace.

Clouser would waste no time at the restart in getting onto the faster high line and pulling away, putting distance between himself, Kennedy and Winchell as Rogers was left to move through the pack after initially finding himself blocked. Patience was the key as Rogers waited until he had the perfect line to move through and set off after the leaders. This move would be important as it pulled him clear of McCormick who was soon in trouble as he brushed the front straight wall, his car bucking and sliding all over the track before he wrestled it back under control heading into turn 1. This had obviously done more damage than just scraping his side body panels, as two laps later in exactly the same place he suffered a blow-out to his right rear tire, exploding with enough force to blow the rear body panels of his car. At this speed all McCormick could do was hang on and hope his car was up to the job of protecting him, and by the time he came to rest all the way down against the turn 1 wall his car was minus its roof and most of its bodywork, but most importantly of all the driver was safe and able to climb out, ready to race again another day.

Rogers would get another lucky break during the caution as Winchell was forced to return to the pits to deal with overheating that would see him restart as last of the lead cars, crucially putting Rogers immediately behind Clouser at the restart. Rogers made short work of Kennedy, leaving the youngster who earlier that day had attended his High School graduation to deal with the charging Winchell who had already reclaimed 4th place. Clouser now had Rogers filling his mirrors as Rogers looked high and low, with Clouser matching his every move with a block of his own.

With 5 laps to go Rogers forced the issue, looking down the inside of Clouser in turn 3 and bringing the leader low to cover the line. Clouser’s was now forced to mirror Rogers every move until he could hold off the charge of no longer, and Rogers moved alongside Clouser in turn 1, pushing him high up the track before blasting away down the back straight and bringing the crowd to their feet. Clouser would do all he could to fight back, but Rogers had timed his run perfectly and had just one more lap to hold on. In no time Rogers was crossing the line to take the win by a car length ahead of Clouser, with Kennedy soon following in 3rd, holding on in a close race with the always-exciting Winchell.

The win was particularly poignant for Rogers coming so soon after the sad passing of Connie Holland, wife of his main sponsor Steve Holland of TM Ranch, and just a few weeks after his car was almost destroyed in a horrific crash at Five Flags Speedway. Clouser took a deserved 2nd place in a race that he played a major part in making so exciting, while both Kennedy and Winchell had a great race between themselves for 3rd. Elsewhere in the field #9z Zach Donatti and #23 Rusty Ebersole ran nose-to-tail for almost the entire 50 laps, while track regular #13 Bob Greene enjoyed his best race of the year before bowing out with just 15 laps to go.

The following Mini Stock feature saw more heartbreak for #81 Cody Blair, although this time he managed to take the green flag on the 2nd row, but applying the gas was the signal for his car to give up, bringing out the pace truck while he was removed to the pits. The second attempt at a start ended as quickly as it started once a flat tire for #13 Bruce Morehouse saw him lose control in turn 2, hitting #v3 Rex Christensen, and seeing both cars head back to the pits with only Christensen re-emerging onto the track. ‘Third time lucky’ seemed to be the key phrase, and this time the cars managed to get up to speed with #8 Jamie Dixson pulling away with #09 Todd Haught in hot pursuit.

After the problems at the start the race would run for 25 green flag laps as Dixson slowly increased his lead. Haught would do his best to reel him in as the race progressed, but the halfway mark saw Dixson push on once more and begin to draw away from the field. The checkered flags would see Dixson taking the win well ahead of Haught, who himself had put significant distance between himself and #14 Chace Miller in 3rd.

The Super Stock race would be #5 Cody Blair’s last chance for glory on a night that had started with so many expectations. From the start the front row cars of #56 Bobby Holley and #01 Scott Smith pulled well away in the lead, leaving a battle behind them for 3rd between a very loose #2x Mike Amato, Blair, #31 J. T. Tippins and #60 Ernie Tumminello. The erratic behavior of Amato’s car made him a dangerous obstacle on the track, but Blair’s wariness to pass him just gave Holley and Smith more time to pull away before eventually Amato’s car calmed down and Blair was able to advance to 3rd place.

Up at the front Holley and Smith were putting on a show and, just like in the earlier races, were setting themselves up with Holley riding the high line and leaving Smith to look low for a way round. The results here were no different either, as on every entry into the corner Smith pulled level only for Holley to power away out of the turn and down the straights. It took a tiny mistake by Holley to give Smith his chance on the 12th lap when his car got loose for a split-second, but that was enough for Smith to move underneath and get his nose in front. However he still didn’t have the pace to get clear, and within 3 laps Holley had used the high line to good effect to push himself back in front.

5 laps to go would be the signal for Smith to make his big move for glory, running hard under Holley into turn 3 and moving across his rival to block his counter-move. Holley would have to back off, giving Smith a big nudge to the rear to try and reclaim his place, but this unsettled his own car more than Smith’s and he was forced to back off and let Smith pull away. The 20th lap would also cap a terrible night for Blair as way over on the other side of the track his #5 car was limping home to the pits, confirming his 3rd ‘DNF’ from 4 races.

By the checkered flag Smith was out on his own at the front, leading Holley home to take a good win in a hard-fought, exciting race. 3rd place would be taken by #86 Rich Goodrich who had run another of his usual well-timed races as he accumulates points towards a genuine chance of the track championship.

The action still hadn’t finished, and those fans who stayed right through to the end of the night’s racing were rewarded with a remarkable Strictly Stock race. After her first ever feature win a week ago #21 Maureen Dahm made the worst possible start as her car failed to respond to her right foot and she was left to pick up momentum at the rear of the field as she got up to race speed.

With most of the racing happening well ahead of her it was noticeable that with each lap she was getting faster and faster, and slowly catching the 4 cars ahead of her. By the halfway point she had made her way onto the tail of #13 Tony Candolino, who she soon passed before dispatching of #9 Kevin Ross just a lap later. The #35 of Gino Tumminello was soon left in her dust as she made a neat pass by powering down the outside with two laps to go. Now just the #57 Joe Candalino stood in her way and she had one lap left to catch him in.

The whole crowd was now willing her on as she flew out of turn 2 with Candalino well and truly in her sights. Making ground down the back straight she held her nerve and moved low to push under and through to the lead as the cars entered turn 4, not only holding off his fight back but pulling away down the front straight to complete a remarkable from-the-back win that delighted the fans. As she emerged from the car, proudly wearing her Army uniform that does double-duty as her racing suit at weekends, it was entirely fitting that the fans went into Memorial Day cheering and applauding one of the US Armed Forces finest, stood proudly in

With dark skies looming the racing action started with the threat of the rain that many of the fans drove through to arrive at the track.  As the early part of the racing program continued on the blue sky came out and provided us with a great night for racing at East Bay Raceway Park.

The Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds hit the track first with their 15-lap feature event.  John Bradley used an early pass to take the lead and hold on for the win.  The win was Bradley’s first win of the season in the class.  Roger Crouse ran strong and challenged for the lead but finished 2nd.  Austin Sanders started 3rd and finished 3rd.  Kevin Bryant and Shane Burrows rounded out the top-5.  Bryant was victorious in the heat race.

In the Limited Late Models Forrest Gough dominated the fifteen lap feature event  take his first win of the season.  Gough started started 6th and used an outside power move on JR Prather, Jr. to take the win.  Prather, Jr. finished 2nd.  Tommy Evonosky, Sr. finsished 3rd.  Bob Peterson started 4th and finished 4th.  Jason Pope was the mover of the evening as he started 10th and finished 5th.  Gough and Tim Powers won the heat races.

In the Precision Kia of Wesley Chapel Street Stocks Eric Moon took the win after numerous restarts.  On those restarts Moon had to hold off Donnie Reed and Thomas Pratt.  Moon was a former crew member for Donnie Reed.  Reed finished 2nd.  The points leader coming into the evening Thomas Pratt finished 3rd.  Jarod Gay and Clarence Pratt rounded out the top-5. Moon and Collin Kruse were victorious in the heats.

The Racecar Engineering Late Models were back for a 25 lap main event that saw Brian Bernhardt hold off Travis Varnadore on multiple late restarts to pick up his first feature win of the season.  Varnadore finished 2nd.   Phillip Cobb started 4th and finished 3rd.  Wallace Peacock finished 4th.  John Koller started 10th and finished 5th for his first top 10 of the season.  Berhardt and Ryan Mitchell won the heat races.

The Outlaw 4’s closed out the racing program for the night with their 15 lap feature event.  Like he did in the heat race Matthew Haynes won the feature event leading flag to flag.  Haynes was able to hold off a late charge from Billy Howard to earn the victory.  The win was Haynes’ series leading 5th of the season.  Howard finished 2nd.  Jesse Brown started 3rd and finished 3rd.  Roberto Morfin, Jr. finished 4th which was his first top 10 of the season.  Jessica Robbins rounded out the top-5.  Haynes won the heat race.

ASA Sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, June 5th, 2010 with the Racecar Engineering Late Models, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modified, Outlaw 4’s, Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers and the always popular Fan Participation Races.    For more information go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

Green Mamba highlights Citrus Events Saturday Night

Probably the most widely known jet car of all time would have to be the Green Mamba. Designed, built, driven, owned and just about anything else you can think of by Doug Rose.

Doug started out with the famous Arfon’s family. Doug drove one of the Green Monsters for them. After a crash that Doug lost his legs in, He came back and designed and built the Mamba.

The Green Mamba has been running all over the USA since the mid sixty’s. Today, Doug takes the Green Mamba out to the circle tracks and does his shows and car burns.  Currently based out of Florida, The Green Mamba and Doug are definitely worth the trip to see him in action.

The GREEN MAMBA Jet Car will be at Citrus Speedway tomorrow night (5/29/10).
Along with:
A 50 Lap Pure Stock Race,
The 4-Cyl Figure-8s,
A Fun Suitcase Race,
An exciting SCHOOL BUS Figure-8s,
and a special 4-CYL ENDURO Race.

This will be a great night for everyone. And the kids will remember the Jet car for a long time. So be sure to bring the ENTIRE family for a fun night at the races.

 NOTE:
Practice next week has changed from Thursday to Friday night.

Attention Late Model drivers:

After careful consideration, we have decided to modify the current LM rules as such:

1. There will be no restrictors mandated for the super late model motors. Spec, steel head, and 9:1 motors.

2. 9:1 motors will now weigh the same 2800lbs as the spec and steel head motors.

3. Crate motor cars will now weigh 2650lbs instead of 2700lbs.

These rules will be in effect for our local 50 lap late model shows. The FAST LM race on 8/7/10 will still be run under the FAST series rules. Any tech questions may be directed to Travis Nichols at 352-585-3560. For any other questions please call John Chance at 352-201-8257.

Practice will be Friday night with free overnight camping if needed.

Come out and have some fun!

Good tops Late Models, Hollinger tops Minis at Orlando SpeedWorld

Orlando Speedworld – May 28th 2010

by Andy Sandall, FASCAR Media

Heavy afternoon showers all over the Orlando area thankfully missed Bithlo and allowed for a full night of racing, but with memories of last season’s rainouts still fresh in many people’s memories the turn-out of both fans and drivers was smaller than usual. As if to reward the hardy souls who braved the weather, the drivers who turned out put on a great show that provided plenty of entertainment, lots of passing, and will have sent everyone home happy.

The first race of the night saw the conclusion of the 12-week mini-season for the Bandolero drivers. Once again the race at the front would be between the Hooven brothers, with #17 Mark Hooven coming home first ahead of #27 Shawn Hooven, who by holding off the late charge of #13 Ryan Shattack claimed the early season Young Gun championship. Behind him the Bandit class would again see #55 Michael Held well ahead of his competitors and mixing it with the older drivers for most of the race. For these younger drivers the championship crown would go to #30 Noah Cornman.

Just 3 E-Modifieds turned out for their truncated feature of 15 laps, although all 3 cars would take a turn at leading the race during that time. Straight away #00 John Hodge leapt away at the front, to be quickly chased down by #12 John Zidek. Hodge would soon drop back to give Zidek his chance as leader, before #93 Bruce Gayton made his decisive move on the 10th lap to slip down the inside and take 1st place. Gayton would not look back and soon take the checkered flag to confirm his win over Zidek in 2nd, with Hodge happily claiming a 3rd place finish – and the points that come with that – to move closer to 3rd place in the 2010 track championship race.

The Legends cars feature saw #50 Ted Ruffo moving out into an early lead and benefiting from the gaggle of cars behind him fighting for position and distracting each other while he raced away with open track ahead of him. By the time the chasing pack had sorted themselves out it was #8 Donovan Ponder who worked his way into 2nd and set off after the leader. It took him a few laps to get on Ruffo’s rear bumper and start to look for a way round, but the laps were ticking down and every look around the side of Ruffo was met with a firm blocking maneuver by the veteran driver ahead of him.

One last attempt to nudge Ruffo high on the way into turn 1 failed and Ponder would have to settle for a close 2nd place behind Ruffo, coming home flag-to-flag to claim his first ever Legends feature win. Way behind the leaders #6 Jim Rix managed to beat off the challenge of #51x Roger Englund for 3rd place, while #13 Ryan Shattack successfully completed his second race of the night, moving up to the senior divisions after his earlier Bandolero race.

The first race of the season at Orlando Speedworld for the Limited Late Models would see the field increased with the addition of the Sportsman cars of #66 Andy Nicholls and #93 Brandon Johnson, both added to this field to help speed the show along with overhead clouds threatening. Away at the front the race soon developed into a three-car shootout between #20 Anthony Sergi, #36 Ross Chastain and #19 Bobby Good. These three would put the first half of the race in the books with relatively little trouble before they were brought under caution thanks to contact between #1 Zach Harris and #7 Dillon Jackson that caused both cars to spin, Jackson losing some of his front bodywork in the process.

The second half of the race would have a lot more action than the first, as Sergi and Chastain fought door to door for the first few laps after the restart, making contact in every turn before Sergi asserted himself on the low line and managed to create a small lead for himself. Chastain instantly fought back, trying a crossover move that lead to a pass on the low side heading into turn 3 to take the lead. Good would see this as his chance to advance too, but his attempt to follow Chastain through was met with a firm, decisive block by Sergi that caused him to stand on his brakes quickly.

The next trip around the track would see Sergi give Chastain a firm tap to his rear-bumper in an attempt to send him up the banks. This had the desired effect, but as Sergi moved through low to complete the maneuver Chastain turned down hard to block the pass, causing Sergi to spin. Both cars would be sent to the rear for the restart, but with these two and Good having already demonstrated they were significantly faster than the field and were embroiled in a spirited fight amongst themselves, the remaining drivers were happy – and probably relieved – to wave them through and allow them to start behind Good and #89 Josh Todd on the front row.

Once the pace truck had peeled off the track Good was away with Chastain in hot pursuit while Sergi unluckily found himself in the wrong place behind Todd, being blocked on the high line and having to watch his rivals pulling away. The young Pro Truck ace was soon back down low on the track and coming through, but his chase was quickly halted as Todd span in turn 2 to bring the yellow flags back out once more. The first attempt to get up to speed was jumped badly by Chastain, but the second was successful and saw the top 3 again pulling away quickly and resuming their race at the front.

The race erupted into life once more with just two laps to go, after Chastain had moved around Good to get out in front once more. Good planted himself firmly on the rear bumper of Chastain’s car where a nudge out of turn 2 was enough to get Chastain loose down the back straight, allowing Good underneath and back into the lead. Sergi would try to capitalize too, trying to get through to 2nd place with an inside move into turn 3, but with his car back under control Chastain again moved down to block Sergi’s run through. This move left Sergi with nowhere to go, inevitably hitting Chastain hard in the side and spinning both cars out once more, seeing both again sent to the 2nd row for the restart.

Another restart would see Good make the best of his good fortune and pull away with clear track ahead of him and no back-markers to worry about. Within two laps the checkered flags were out to give Good a win ahead of Chastain, who managed to hold off Sergi’s attempts to grab 2nd in what had been a thrilling race at the front between three hard-driving racers. Back down the field the ‘race within a race’ saw Nicholls beat out Johnson to take honors in the Sportsman division.

The Super Stock race would see another great three-car battle, but in this case it was for the runners-up spot once #16D David Gould had again put a stranglehold on the race right from the green light and raced away in the lead. Even a mid-race caution and restart gave Gould no problems as he lived up to the new decals on his car declaring himself ‘the fastest chicken in the South’ to take yet another win with no-one in the field having the speed to trouble him.

But behind him the battle between #316 Joe Bandur, #721 John Bennett and #77 Matt Reynolds was an absolute classic that had the fans enthralled for the length of the race. Early on it was Bandur who took advantage of his 2nd row starting position to head the chasing pack, but Reynolds would quickly be looking on the high side for a way round, forcing Bandur to move up the track and block to preserve his position. This tactic would cost Reynolds dear on the 7th lap when he went just too high in turn 4 and gave Bennett the line he needed to come underneath, relegating Reynolds back to 4th.

Navigating their way through lapped traffic bunched the cars back together slightly but still Bandur was holding off Bennett and Reynold’s attempts to get around him on the high line. Nothing they tried seemed to work as Bandur produced his best drive of 2010 to keep his 2nd spot, but his rhythm was broken as the caution lights suddenly came on, needed after a spin way back in the field by #55 Denny Johns, who had just overcooked things coming out of turn 2 and couldn’t get his car restarted in time to pull himself clear before the leaders came around.

The restart put Bandur alongside Gould, who wasted no time in rocketing away to rebuild his cushion at the front, but with Bandur up high there was room for Bennett and then Reynolds to barge their way through and push Bandur back down to 4th. Bennett would seize this opportunity and put some distance between himself and the 3rd place man, but Bandur wasn’t in any mood to see his hard work go to waste and he was quickly all over the rear of the #77 car, giving him a taste of his own medicine from earlier in the race.

With two laps to go the pressure being applied by Bandur told as Reynolds went into turn 3 too hot, his car getting loose and sliding high as they came around into turn 4. Bandur saw his chance and powered underneath as Reynolds grappled with his sliding car. Gould would soon be taking the checkered flag to continue his ‘hero or zero’ season of wins or nothing, with Bennett comfortably clear in 2nd place. Bandur would take home an excellent 3rd place as a reward for his great drive, beating out Reynolds as the top 4 finished well ahead of Johns back in 5th place.

It was a case of quality over quantity in the Mini Stocks feature as the five cars on show contained 4 of the fastest cars in the division, each perfectly capable of winning a feature. Pole position would go to points leader #15 Casey Loeffler, but the young driver still gaining experience in Mini Stock racing would swiftly drop all the way to the back of the field, leaving his much more experience rivals to battle it out in front of him.

Profiting from the outside front row start was #85 Rex ‘Boneman’ Hollinger who had the dual benefits of not only having clear track ahead of him but also missing being involved in the near-carnage behind him as Loeffler dropped back, leading to #78 Mark Avery, #77 Lee Davis and #31 David Russell trying get around the pole sitter in the first corner. This almost put the cars 4-wide mid-corner before Russell realized this just wasn’t going to work and slammed on his brakes. Avery also had to take immediate action as he was squeezed down low onto the Bandolero track, also braking hard to regain control of his car.

All of this was of no consequence to Hollinger who was pulling away and watching it unfold in his rear view mirror. Once around to complete the first lap his lead was already comfortable and being helped by the chasing drivers battling it out amongst each other. The race reached half distance with no real resolution to the melee for 2nd place and it seemed to be in the bag for the Boneman, but as the chasing cars headed into turn 3 Davis would see his car’s engine compartment go up in a spectacular fireball and straight-line into the turn 3 wall. Thankfully the incident looked much more serious than it had actually been, with a minor mechanical issue in the motor of the #77 car momentarily spilling fluid onto the hot engine that quickly burst into flames, but no matter how bad it had looked Davis was still able to return to the pits under his own power.

A lengthy cleanup followed that saw plenty of oil-dry applied to the track before the drivers gave the signal to the flagstand that they were happy to get back up to speed again. Once back underway it was a different fluid spill that would affect the outcome of the race as Hollinger roared away, only to have a scary moment in turn 4 just two laps later as his car skidded on a new oil patch, forcing the driver who act quickly to catch his sliding car and continue. This gave Russell in 2nd a chance to close in on the leader’s bumper, but just one lap later, and with Hollinger tip-toeing his way through the same spot in turn 4, Russell found it for himself. Unlike Hollinger, Russell was unable to control the slide and would spin out to bring about another caution with just 5 laps to go.

This would put Avery alongside Hollinger on the front row, and for the first time in the race Hollinger would not have it all his own way, as Avery kept pace on the outside and even nosed his car in front out of turn 2 before Hollinger used his extra speed to pull back ahead down the back straight and into the corner. The leaders would now be nose to tail around the track, and with the white flag on display Avery would try a hard nudge to the back of Hollinger’s car in turn 2 as he looked for a way underneath to the lead. All this did was spur Hollinger on and unsettle Avery’s car, forcing the #78 to drop back and let Loeffler through to grab a handy 2nd place behind the Boneman, who came through unscathed to claim his first win of the 2010 season. Avery would hold on to 3rd ahead of Russell, who did more than enough to keep hold of his lead in the points table.

The Strictly Stock feature would see former track champion #8 Neil Kirby get away to an early lead that he would never surrender as he came around to add another feature win to his impressive tally. Behind him 2nd place would be taken by the ever-improving  #8x Luis Guillen Jr. who produced his best performance of the season so far to hold off a charge by #3 Shane Setorus in 3rd.
