Josh Peacock Dominates Racecar Engineering Late Models Feature Event

By:  Jason Loughren

09/18/2010

The skies were clear as four classes of cars were at the track ready to rock and roll for an exciting night of racing at the Clay by the Bay.

The Outlaw 4’s Mathew Haynes took the win after a wild final lap.  Shirlene Hammond and Chris Zimmerman were running nose to tail as they came off of turn 4 on the last lap.  Zimmerman and Hammond got together and they both spun right in front of the flag stand.  Haynes took the win which was his 6th of the season.  Travis Staats started 16th and finished 2nd after a strong run.  Jason Russell finished 3rd.  Brittany Yates picked up her first top-5 of the year with a 4th place finish.  Jesse Brown rounded out the top-5.  Billy Howard and Zimmerman won the heats.

In the  Q Auto and Injury Limited Late  Models Forrest Gough led flag to flag to pick up his second feature win of the season.  Gough held off the charge of Tim Powers on multiple restarts.  Powers captured a 2nd place finish.  John Bradley finished 3rd.  Roger Crouse started deep in the field and finished 4th.  Waylan Haynes rounded out the top 5 with a 5th place finish.  Scotty Williams and and Gough won the heat races.

In the Racecar Engineering Late Models Josh Peacock dominated the caution marred event for the win.  The win was Josh Peacock’s 6th win of the season.  David Schmauss finished 2nd.  Philip Cobb ran strong and finished 3rd.  John Koller started 10 and finished 4th.  Ted Erskine started 5th and finished 5th.   Cobb,  Schmauss and Wallace Peacock were victorious in the heats.

In the Motorstats.com 4 cylinder bombers Roberto Morfin, Sr. started on the pole and led all the way to take the checkered flag for his second win of the year.  Points leader Kever Raulerson appeared to have finished in second place but was DQ’d in post race inspection.  Mathew Odell finished 2nd after starting 9th.  Mike Lacey finished 3rd.   Troy Dittebrand and Brett Calonge rounded out the top-5.  Morfin, Sr.,  Chuck Mathias, and Raulerson won the heats.

Johnnie Alexander won the B  Feature Event.

ASA Sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, September 25th,  2010 with the Racecar Engineering Late Model’s, East Bay Sprints, Precision Kia Street Stocks,  Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers and the Dirt Daubers.  The Old Time Mods will also compete.   For more information go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

A Wild Night As the Bounty Claimed at Ocala

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL- Near perfect weather greeted racers and fans at the historic Ocala Speedway on Friday night, as “All Churches Night” featured five divisions of racing action, plus the fun and fellowship of Faster Pastor racing as well.  Elvin Harper of Belleview Christian Church came to the southeast’s toughest 3/8ths mile as a first timer and beat Monty Grant of First Baptist Church Ocala to the checkers, thus becoming the reigning racing reverend for 2010.  So far Faster Pastor races have spanned three years at Ocala Speedway, and has produced three different winners for three different churches.

But while the reverends were one of the draws to the track on Friday night, so were the Colortyme Modifieds as the $500 bounty remained in place on current points leader, Jeff Matthews.  And for the second time in two weeks, a tough field of modifieds was there to take on the challenge, and when it was over “The Repo Man” had upped his score of losses this season at Ocala to three.

Kyle Bronson and Wayne Hammond were the odds on favorites to collect the bounty from the start as both have given Mathews fits in the past and were more than capable of doing it again.  And as was the case two weeks ago, Mathews struggled with his set up on the night while Bronson nailed his, and it was Bronson who dominated the race while Mathews and Hammond kept it close in the top three.  Kyle Bronson collected the $500 bounty, plus another $100 bonus from Astor Recycling, plus his normal payout for a Colortyme Modified feature win.  Jeff Mathews held off Wayne Hammond to finish second, while fourth place went to Garret Stewart after a run that saw him running in front of both Mathews and Hammond at one point in the race.  “Big Mac” Charlie MacNichols returned to America’s Dirt Track after a long absence and nabbed the fifth place spot.

Probably the wildest feature race of the night came from the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, which normally feature tough and exciting racing but hardly ever produce spectacular fireworks.  But Friday night’s Hobby Stock Field was on a tear, and so were Danny Miller and “The Outlaw” Jody Wells.  The first five laps of the race featured a heated battle between both racers that ended when an inside move by Miller sent him into the grass and one of the tractor tires on the inside of turn 1.  Miller’s car almost went end over end, but settled on it’s top after performing an all but perfect pirouette on it’s nose as Dean Jarvis barely escaped by on the outside.  Miller suffered an elbow injury that required some attention, but otherwise walked away for the spectacular crash.

And while the cleanup of the remains of Miller’s machine took place, Jody Wells ducked into the pit area to change a tire that was going down and was therefore relegated to the rear of the field for the restart.  That put current points leader, Dean Jarvis, into the lead spot, and Wells knew that if he failed to clear traffic and get to Jarvis fast, the veteran racer would drive away form him. So when the green waved Wells shot inside of everyone in an attempt to gain position, but pushed high in turn 4 and into the teeth of the grid.  That resulted in contact with at least two other cars, plus Wells slamming into the concrete of the frontstretch wall in the second thunderous hit in one lap, ending his night with a badly damaged race car on the dreaded hook.

So with Miller and Wells in pieces in the pits, one might think that Dean Jarvis might take control and go the distance.  But on a night when attrition was becoming as important as anything else in the division, fans and racers should never assume anything.  Just three laps from the finish Jarvis slowed as a tire began deflating and that opened the door for Ronald Lentz in second place and Tim Hughes in third.  Lentz tried to pass Jarvis low as Jarvis attempted to go in the same direction to get out of harm’s way, and that allowwed Hughes to rocket around the top of turn 3 and into the lead.  From there it was all Tim Hughes as he claimed the victory plus another $100 bonus from Astor Recycling, and Ronald Lentz settled for second place.  Heath Walker hung on and grabbed the third spot while Tommy Ausburn ventured off of the pavement again and finished fourth.  Dean Jarvis limped home on the flat tire and finished in the fifth spot.

The Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks are known for fender banging action at Ocala Speedway, and there was plenty of that to go around.  Jesse Corbitt and Chris Fontaine were among the racers who were near the front when they were involved in altercations and were penalized to the rear, while others were forced to exit due to damage and call it a night.  But while the liberal use of fenders and bumpers went on throughout most of the field, Scott Mooers shot to the lead and found that the going was much safer if one simply outruns all of the animosity behind them.

Mooers’ main threat came from Jason Gamble, who managed to stay close to the 10 car thanks to some hard nosed driving and some caution flags, but was never able to catch and pass the leader.  Meanwhile Michael Stalnaker was just outside of the top five and struggling as his ride seemed to be down on power after last weekend’s top to bottom teardown that resulted in a victory.  In the end Mooers was simply too tough to tame as he notched the win and Jason Gamble followed for second place.  Michael Valdez had another impressive run with a third place finish, holding off Chris Shea who came in fourth.  and Chris Fontaine fought back from the rear of the field to salvage fifth place on the night.

The fireworks were equally spectacular with Ocala’s Mini Stock Division, as some early contact between two cars erupted into a big mess exiting turn 1.  Buddy Pope and Dan Kerr swapped some paint and caused a caution on the first lap, and both were relegated to the rear for the restart.  And as the green waved Dan Kerr’s attempt for some retaliation resulted in his 73 car slamming the frontstretch wall hard, demolishing the machine while Pope suffers only some minor damage and drove away. The incident not only sent Dan Kerr’s car home in a wad, but it also earned him a conduct disqualification.

From that point on it was the Keith Briggs show, as “Hot Shot” rocketed to the lead and ran away from everyone else.  Belleview’s Steve Mooers took a turn in the 73U and was fast, but not as fast as Briggs.  Keith Briggs got his fourth consecutive Mini Stock win while Steve Mooers finished second and Buddy Pope battled back to third place.  Johnny Zackery was the fourth place finisher and Dean Kinsey claimed fifth.

Ocala’s Gladiator Division features the closest points battle of the season and has seen a list of racers occupy the top spot and then lose it, so it was no surprise when some contenders had their struggles on Friday night wile others were ready to take advantage of the situation.  Casey Feaster got caught up in someone else’s’ fight in his heat race, but found himself on the pole as the green flag waved for the feature.  Feaster was focused and determined to win, and went three wide at the start before wrestling control away from Robert Graham and David Ladrie.

Ladrie earned a win last week after a post race tech disqualification claimed the only car to beat him to the checkers, and Ladrie was on fire after getting his first career win.  “Super Dave” kept the 11 car in the top three for the entire race but never found his way around Robert Graham, as Graham tried to chase down Feaster.  Casey Fester got the win and narrowed his point deficit in the process while Graham finished on the second spot.  Devin Walker came on strong late to get past Dave Ladrie and take the third spot, while Ladrie finished fourth and failed to bring home another trophy for his wife to dust.  And Matt Shea never managed to climb any higher than the fifth spot, but still held onto the points lead by a mere 7 points over Devin Walker.

The wildest show on wheels comes to Ocala Speedway on Friday, September 24th, as Car Warz brings a nationally known brand of demolition derby, stunt driving, and racing, to the southeast’s toughest 3/8ths mile.  The show will feature multiple wacky races including a boat and trailer race, flag pole racing, plus a big money four cylinder enduro event.  There will also be an RV demolition derby, plus spectacular mid air t-bone crashing, ATV and motorcycle stunt competition, and more.  Gates will open at 5PM on Friday night and all seating is first come, first served.  For more information, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

LATE MODELS SET TO GO SATURDAY NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY – EIGHT CLASSES READY TO DO BATTLE

by Dave Westerman

Late Model race fans finally get their chance to see the high-speed machines in action one again as they headline an eight division racing program Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. The race will be the final event drivers can run to qualify for the extra prize money being put up for the final Late Model race of the season on October 16th. Posted awards for that race now top $22,000.

Jeff Scofield has got a decent hold on the Late Model point lead, currently 101 points ahead of second place Kevin Ingram. The point race behind Scofield is tight though as Ingram, Perry Lovelady, Ryan Lisak and Jason Vail all are within 43 points of each other. Expect a big group of Late Model machines, many which haven’t run at Auburndale so far this year, to be on hand getting qualified for the big October race.

Along with the Late Models, the Legend Cars return to action as do the Mini Cup cars. The Sportsman, Street Stocks, Scramblers, Bandoleros and Kids Club round out Saturday’s huge race card.

The Legend Car class has been off for two weeks and the drivers will be chomping at the bit since their Regional Qualifier was rained out last week in South Florida. The Legends also have a new point leader in “No Brake” Jake Perkins of Ocala who snatched the top spot from Gerald White, Jr. three weeks ago. Perkins’ lead over White is a slim eight points as the two young drivers will be the ones to battle it out for the 2010 crown. 2009 champion Justin Brown is in third but 88 markers behind the leader. New Legend Car teams continue to be formed and Russ Thomson of Legend Cars of Florida expects fields for the remainder of the year to top out over 20 cars per week.

The Mini Cup racers always put on a wild show and after nearly two months since their last Auburndale race, they will definitely be ready to put the “pedal to the metal.” Georgia driver John Beach currently holds the point lead by eight over Rick Ragan. Ragan is just 14 markers ahead of Harold Crooms (who doesn’t have a ride rght now) while Tyler Scofield is fourth in points, 20 behind Crooms. Look for a big field of the fast little machines with drivers like Brandon Beach, Cole Partelo, Cindarae Irish, Dale Pulst, and both Rick Cline, Senior and Junior all in action along with a host of others.

Despite a rough outing last time, veteran shoe Dave Dunkin still holds on to a 22 point advantage over Mark Medeiros in the Sportsman point chase. The ultimate run for the championship will come down to that pair as third place Brandon Duchscherer is over 200 points behind Medeiros.

Another good run by Jeff Waterman allowed him to gain just a bit of ground on Street Stock point leader Matt McCrary who was among a host of drivers who ended up with a DNF last week in the Street Stock feature. McCrary still leads Waterman by 36 headed into this weeks action. Dave Colpritt is still third, but engine woes in practice last week have pretty much dropped him from contention for the point title. Interestingly enough, point leader Mccrary has yet to score a feature win while James Wright III picked up his eighth victory last week but is only fourth in points because he has sat out virtually half the races this year to enjoy his other love… hunting.

Although rain curtailed the Scrambler feature last week, Kim Gullett opened up her point lead over Brian Tyre who was a no-show to the track last week. Gullett earned points by finishing second in the heat race and now holds a 14 point edge over Tyre. Richard Brown is solidly in third place in points but trails Tyre by 54 points.

Open practice will be Thursday evening from 5-8 PM plus the Late Models will have a special practice on Friday evening from 4-11 PM. For more information, call Rex Guy at 863-287-4344.

Saturday, pit gates open at 2PM and grandstand gates open at 5PM. All classes will qualify this week starting at 7PM, or possibly earlier depending on the number of cars present. Plan to get to the track early as a large crowd is expected. Auburndale Speedway DOES NOT raise ticket prices for special events. Adult admission is the regular $12 and Seniors are admitted for $10. Kids 5-12 get in for $5 and all children age 4 and under are free. A family four-pack (two adults – two kids 5-12) is $25. Wear your new Auburndale Speedway T-shirt and get $2 off your admission!!

For the second consecutive week, “Lindsey’s Little Racers” will be giving away another pair of bicycles thanks to the generosity of our fans and Truck racer Jim Cowhey, Jr. and his wife Lauri of All Compressor & Equipment, Inc. out of Tampa. Two large “prize packs” will also be given out courtesy Martha Nemechek and NEMCO Racing.

The 100 Lap Mini Stock race scheduled for 9/25/10 has been changed to 50 Laps.  This far into the season some of the Mini Stock drivers had expressed concern to the track officials about putting that many laps on the cars.  The track has decided to reduce the laps.  It will still be a very exciting race for all the Mini Stock drivers, and the fans of the sport. So, be sure you don’t miss it.

All Drivers: Don’t forget the Driver’s Meetings. You don’t want to be penalized.

We look forward to seeing all of you This (and every) Saturday.

Faster Pastor Racing Returns To Ocala Speedway

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  One of the most popular annual events at Ocala Speedway happens this Friday, September 17th, as “All Churches Night” pits congregation against congregation while racing reverends take on each other with Faster Pastor Racing.  The alcohol free event traditionally attracts a huge crowd, including a lot of “first timers” spending their first night watching dirt racing at the local level.  In addition to the faster pastors, fans will see the Colortyme Modifieds return to action with the $500 bounty still in effect on Jeff Mathews, plus more action from the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.

“All Churches Night” began as a way for local congregations to come together and do something out of the ordinary, plus provided a new means of fellowship and contact between churches in an alcohol free, family oriented atmosphere.  Church members loudly cheer their pastors as they race in real race cars on Ocala Speedway’s tough 3/8ths mile circuit, and the preachers are coached by the racers who drive those cars during regular feature racing.  Two Faster Pastor races at Ocala Speedway have produced two different winners, so it is likely that this season yet another church congregation will have reason to celebrate.

There was a lot of hoopla surrounding Ocala Speedway’s $500 bounty on Jeff Mathews two weeks ago, and since Mathews failed to finish the race and thus the bounty went unclaimed, the speedway has reinstated it for this week’s Colortyme Modified feature race.  Mathews has won all but two races this season as Kyle Bronson collected $1000 two weeks ago, and with the bounty still active chances are that there will be racers lining up to try and make it three races that Mathews has failed to win.

Dean Jarvis is holding a 43 point lead over Heath Walker going into this weekend’s Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stock feature, but neither of those competitors have been doing any winning lately.  But despite their lack of regular visits to Victory Lane, their heated battles on the track have become real crowd pleasers featuring hard nosed racing.  The man to beat at this point is Daniel Miller, as he racked up yet another victory this past Friday night and seems to be surging toward the end of the racing season.

The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks spent a long night hanging around the tech shed before Mike Stalnaker could go home with another win, and in the process Stalnaker discovered that he would need another engine in order to complete the season.  So the points leader  will most definitely be back with something new under the hood and newfound determination built on proof that his machine is legal and a true winner.  Chris Shea continues to chase Stalnaker as the racing season winds down, but at 134 points out of first place and Scott Mooers just 13 behind him,  Shea has more important things to think about rather than how to do the nearly impossible.

Ocala Speedway’s Mini Stocks will most likely crown a new champion for the third season in a row this year, and any betting person would say that their last name will be Kerr.  Dan Kerr has the points lead with Nick Kerr just 24 points back, and both create a formidable team on the track.  Nick is no stranger to Victory Lane this season, but since Keith Briggs returned to the scene neither Kerr has not found the answer to running in front of the 19T machine.  At least, not yet.

The points lead in Ocala’s Gladiator Division has been passed around lately more than the collection plates at church, and currently Matt Shea has managed to climb his way into the top spot if only by a mere 3 points.  Devin Walker was the latest points leader to lose the top spot so Shea had better hope that history does not repeat itself yet again.  The next closest racer to Walker and Shea is Casey Feaster, who at 51 points out of first place is yet another who has visited the top spot then taken a tumble.  Feaster was on his way to a win last Friday when mechanical woes sent him to the pits on a hook, so look for the 20 car to be ready to make Matt Shea the next guy to have it and lose it in recent months.

Ocala Speedway will open the grandstand gates at 5PM this Friday, and church member are encouraged to come early and stake out cheering sections for their respective racing reverends.  Ocala Speedway’s regular fans are reminded that “All Churches Night” is an alcohol free event, so no beer will be sold, nor is alcohol permitted on the premises this Friday night.  For ticket prices, directions to the speedway, or more information on coming events, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.
