Citrus County Speedway News

By Johnny Sanders

This Saturday night Citrus County Speedway will have it’s annual $5 grandstand admission night, that’s right, just $5. On the race program this week will the Street Stocks, Taylor Made Homes Pure Stocks, Modified Mini Stocks, Hornets, and the best Figure 8 racing around with the Street Stock/Pure Stock figure 8’s! Grandstand gates open at 4pm, and racing starts at 6pm.

Last Week:

Jenkins and Schnader take 1st wins of the season

Mother Nature has played a big part in the last two races at Citrus County Speedway. The last race on June 25th was in doubt right up until the green flag for the 1st heat. This past Saturday night was no different, rain fell most of the afternoon in the Central Florida area, leaving the race program in jeopardy once again. Practice started right on time at 3pm, and despite a few rain drops during the drivers meeting, the race night started right on time.

16 Open Wheel Modifieds were trying to make their way to victory lane for their 40 lap feature on Saturday night. Billy Bechtelheimer (6) would benefit from the 4 row feature inversion, and start from the pole position, with Tommy Schnader (19) along side. Schnader would launch from his outside pole position to take the early lead. Bechtelheimer would fall into second followed by Robbie Cooper (98). Cooper would get by Bechtelheimer and set his sights on the leader Schnader. A lap 11 caution for the spinning car of Steven Hise (2) would give Cooper the break he needed to catch up to Schnader. On the restart, Schnader would prove he was the man to beat, pulling back out to a comfortable lead in just a few laps. Behind the top 2 drivers, the action was non-stop, which lead to the nights scariest incident. Richie Smith (42) and L.J. Grimm (25) made contact coming out of turn 4 on lap 20 while racing side by side. Grimm’s car would make heavy contact with the front stretch wall while Smith’s car would slide to the infield in a shower of sparks. Once Grimm’s car came to rest, a fire erupted in the fuel cell area, as well as the engine compartment. Grimm quickly exited his car, and the track crew extinguished the blaze in short order. Grimm’s car was hooked to the wrecker, and looks to have a trip to the frame jig in it’s future. Smith would repair his car and rejoin the race at the tail. On the restart Schnader would bring the field to green followed by Cooper and Dalton Nelson (94) in 3rd. Schnader would again take off and build a lead, but behind him, the action was furious. Nelson was now under pressure from the last 2 Modified point champions, Jeremy Gerstner (70) and Curtis Neumann (01). Neumann would make an outside move on both drivers before being squeezed into the backstretch wall by Nelson. Neumann would lift, which let Gerstner fill the hole on the bottom. There would be contact between the 2 drivers entering turn 3, with Gerstner taking the position. One lap later, contact between Gerstner and Neumann again, would send both cars spinning and to the rear of the field. With those 2 drivers now in the rear for the restart, this put the 51 of Josh Todd into the 4th position. Todd had methodically made his way through the field picking cars off one at a time. The lap 24 restart saw Schnader jump back out in the lead, but Todd (51) was coming in a hurry. Todd would get by Nelson for 3rd and continue his charge to the front. Lap 33 would see the last caution of the night for the 81 of Herb Neumann Jr. and give Todd a shot at the win. On the restart Todd would put pressure on Cooper for 2nd right away, and take the position with just 5 laps to go. Schnader would prove to have too large of a lead, and go on to take his 1st feature win of the year. Todd would come home 2nd with Cooper holding on to 3rd. Point leader Bobby Ervien (88) would come from his last row starting position to take a solid 5th place finish just behind Nelson in 4th. Doug Miller (53) and Grimm were the heat race winners.

Cody Stickler took advantage of his outside pole position to take the lead over the 12 car sportsman field. Mark Peterson (73) would fall into 2nd from his pole position followed by Bobby Ervein (8). Heat race winner Chris Harvey (51) was running in the 4th position when his racer would have a rear gear let go right in the middle of the back stretch. Point leader Ernie Reed was following Harvey on the bottom line, and made contact with the now broke Harvey, sending Harvey spinning to the infield. It was a close call for the point leader, which could have cost him dearly in his championship run. Stickler would pace the field on the restart and stretch his lead out at the drop on the green. Back in the field, 8th place starter Brandon Morris, and 11th place starter Aaron Williamson were making a charge to the front. Lap 15 would see a caution for contact between George Gorham Jr. (10) and David Williamson (12). Gorham would be black flagged for rough driving, after pushing Williamson into the outside wall several times, while trying to pass him. Stickler would rocket away on the restart and go on to take his 2nd feature win of the year followed by the hard charging Brandon Morris in 2nd, and new daddy Aaron Williamson in 3rd. Heat race winners were Reed and Harvey.

Point leader David Walls (35) would make it 2 for 2 with his new car, taking the victory in the 20 lap Taylor Made Homes Pure Stock feature. Sheri Makula (27) would get to the front 1st, but could not hold off Walls for the win. A great battle for the 3rd position between Happy Florian (65) and William Stanbury (13) had everyone’s attention for the last few laps of the feature. Florian would make the last lap pass to take 3rd place over Stanbury. Walls now has a nearly put a lock on his 2nd division championship in a row, with a huge 168 point lead. Heat race winners were Makula and Walls.

12 Sheldon Palmes Insurance Mini Stocks took the green for their 20 lap feature with Tim Scalise (24) taking the early lead from his outside pole position. Pole sitter Shawn Jenkins (43) would fall into the 2nd spot. The 1st caution came out on lap 13 for the spinning Jessey Mallory (50), and tightened the field back up. There would be a few attempts to restart this race, but a 2 quick cautions sent Buddy Mallory (51) and Ashlee Williamson (84) to the rear, before the field would complete one lap. Scalise took off on the restart, but pushed wide on turn 4, opening a lane for Jenkins to slip by for the lead. Jeremy Sharrone (32) and Phil Edwards (21) were waging the best battle in the field behind the leaders. Edwards got several good looks on the inside, only to have the door slammed in his face by Sharrone. The tight racing finally caught up with this duo in turn 1 on lap 15, sending both cars for a spin, with Sharrone getting a flat left rear also. Edwards would tag the rear, and Sharrone would return 1 lap down. Jenkins would pull out to a lead on the last restart, while the new 2nd place car of Sonya Heater, was under heavy pressure from Ashlee Williamson (84). Williamson would make the outside groove work, and just edge out Heater at the line for 2nd. Jenkins took his 1st feature win of the season after several weeks of hard work and some bad luck. Heater increased her point lead with her 3rd place finish, and now holds a 15 point lead over 2nd place Kevin Stone (98).

11 Pro Figure 8’s put on perhaps their best race of the year, going almost the whole race without a caution. Joey Catarelli (6) rocketed off of his pole position to set the pace for the entire race. Behind him, 10th place starter Mason Love (01) made his way from the back of the field to challenge front row starter Robbie Powell for 2nd in the last 8 laps of the race. Powell would suffer a flat left rear tire coming to take the white flag, which brought out the caution, and set up a 1 lap shoot out for the win. Catarelli would get a great restart, and never give Love a chance to race for the win. Catarelli took his 2nd feature win of the year, and reclaimed the point lead from Wayne Calkins (14). Love came home 2nd with Benny Harris (3rd). This was indeed the best race of their season, the intersection action looked like a well choreographed dance. We can only hope this type of racing continues for the rest of the season.

12 Outlaw Mod Mini’s made their bi-monthly visit to Citrus County Speedway. Last race was on of the best the series had seen at Citrus, and this race was just as good. There was a 3 way battle right to the checkers with Kevin Campbell (19), Ric Mills (22), and Doug Hopper (15) who started dead last in the field. All three drivers put on an exciting show, that ended with Mills taking his 1st feature win of the year at Citrus. Mills held on to 2nd by fighting off the late charge of Miller.

Remember: This Saturday night Citrus County Speedway will have it’s annual $5 grandstand admission night, that’s right, just $5.

See You Saturday!

Five Divisons And Six Features at Bubba Raceway Park

By Jimmy Rouse- Bubba Raceway Park Media

The Top Gun Sprint Car Series arrives for their 1st of 6 races in a Bubba Raceway Park season for the series while the Young Gun Sprints (Part of the Top Gun Sprint Car Series) make their only scheduled appearance of 2011, the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants V-8 Thunderstocks in their 8th race of 2011, Gladiators in their 6th, and the RaceCar Engineering Late Models race twice on the night.

The Top Gun Sprint Car Series has a 6-race season with a points fund and championship. Not only will they be racing to be the best at Bubba Raceway Park, but they have a tight battle for the Top Gun championship as well. Danny Martin, driver of the #24, leads Mark Ruel, Jr. and the 83 team by only 20 points. Ruel will look to gain points, but Terry Witherspoon is close, only 8 behind Ruel. As the top 3 battle, Tim George and Jimmy Ballew, Jr. will search for lost points and put in championship caliber runs with hopes of hoisting the championship trophy at Bubba Raceway Park and in the Top Gun Sprint Car Series.

The Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants V-8 Thunderstocks always make the show exciting and last week certainly showed it. For the first time in 2011 the points lead changed hands as Jason Gamble had held it until the consistent Jonathan Gillette overtook him. Gillette has never won a feature and has reason to win and maintain the points lead. Brian Shea is in the 2nd position and could be breathing down Gillette’s neck, but missed a race for his brother’s wedding. Shea would like to continue his march to the front. Shea’s team-mate, Gordon Cade, has put his 121 in 3rd, but is still searching for that elusive first win on the clay. Cade will have to keep “The Canuck” Tim Mathieu behind him, however, and Mathieu has a win under his belt from last season. In 5th is Chris Watson who is still searching for his 1st win, as are all of the top 5 drivers but Mathieu. These 5 have shown great consistency, but wouldn’t mind taking a win. Please note that the official points for the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants V-8 Thunderstocks and Gladiators were not posted at the time that this article was written.

Steve Cox leads Brandon Haseleu by 39 points in the Gladiators division. Haseleu is still searching for career win #1, but Cox is looking for win #5 of 2011 at Bubba Raceway Park. Cox’s 1.2 average finish in 2011 has kept him out front of the pack. Reid Christensen has come close to a win in 2011, but hasn’t quite reached victory circle yet. Christensen could close that 51 point gap to the leader with a huge win for the young driver. Richard Todd, top rookie in 2011, is 67 points behind Cox, but has made steady progress and could steal a win by the end of the season. Jerry Taylor has driven his Shade Tree/M&M Racing cars to 5th place in the championship standings and will hope to continue to move up the standings. Please note that the official points for the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants V-8 Thunderstocks and Gladiators were not posted at the time that this article was written.

For the first time in many years at Bubba Raceway Park there will be a division with double features. The RaceCar Engineering Late Models will take to the track twice with the possibility for 100 points to be scored between the 2 features. Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. hasn’t won the Bubba Raceway Park championship since 1993, the year before it was paved, but he currently leads the standings by 12 over Dillon Wood. Wood continues to run up front and is very close to getting that first win. The 2010 champion Mark Whitener and his Big Frog Motorsports team missed a race during the season, but they have clawed their way back into 3rd, 37 points behind Lloyd. “The Locomotive” Johnny Collins and “The Tallahassee Terror” Tyler Ivey are mired in 4th and 5th, respectively. Collins was the runner-up of the Powell Memorial and Ivey was the inaugural winner of the Mike Peters Open, so both can run up front. By the end of the night, up to 8 different drivers could leave with the points lead.

Gates open at 4:30 with racing scheduled for 7. For more information you can check out www.bubbaracewaypark.com or call the Speedway hotline.

Final Saturday Races at VSP With $100 To Win Street Stocks

by BJ Cavin- VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park will be a bit nostalgic to longtime fans as it will be the last regular Saturday night program at The World’s Fastest Half Mile in 2011.  VSP will have some two night shows that will bring racing to Saturdays, but regular racing will take place on Friday nights beginning on July 22nd with the rescheduled Scott Thompson Memorial.  Volusia Speedway will be celebrating “Christmas in July” this weekend, and kids will delight to know that Santa is going to take an evening out of his Florida summer vacation in Daytona Beach to come and visit his favorite race track.

With the Scott Thompson Memorial headlining the first Friday night show on the 22nd, this Saturday will be the final tune up for the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Fiat Late Models to grab some seat time under real race conditions before the big event.  That will open the door of opportunity for some of the racers competing in the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series to come in a week early and take on the big half mile, plus size up Volusia’s seemingly invincible Donnie Chappell.  Chappell has literally welded a lock on the Late Model points battle so far in 2011, and seems to be heads above the rest of the regular competition.  But then again, when he last took to his home track he found himself trailing the likes of David Clegg as “The Sodfather” earned an impressive win.

And saying good-bye to Saturday night racing at VSP will be quite a party, especially for fans of the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks.  The schedule had called for the Street Stocks to run a $750 to win feature this Saturday night, but the generous support of Absolute Auto has upped the ante to a $1000 to win payout to the winner.  That is excellent news to Philip Brown who as of late seems unbeatable every time the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks hit the clay.  But before anyone goes ahead and writes the check out to the driver of the 13 car, fans might want to check and see who else might be planning to chase the $1000 cash carrot, as racers like Grady Christian and James Smith have given Brown about all that he could handle but came up just short of sealing the deal.

The Quality Brands Budweiser Modifieds will be back after a lengthy absence this Saturday, and undoubtedly Jeff Mathews will be ready to reassert his standing on the top rung of the points ladder.  Jared Allison and Larry Burkins are battling it out for second place as Allison has the advantage at present, and both are still targeting Mathews despite the lead that the 33 car has built.  Mathews has not been unbeatable this season as an accident and a couple of competitors have managed to keep him out of the Destination Daytona Victory Lane at times, so look for the competition to be tough, and look for the 33 to be running at, or very near, the front.

Ronnie Ponce climbed back behind the wheel of the 57P Sportsman last Saturday night and outpaced Aaron Barsness to the checkered flag.  That put an end to the winning streak for the dynamic driving duo of Barsness and Scott Lagassee, and it sets the stage for this weekend’s Daytona Machine Shop Sportsman feature to see another fresh face in the Destination Daytona Victory Lane.  Meanwhile Blaise Hetznecker has returned the 17H to the top three as he finished right behind Barsness on Saturday night, and Stanton Mills wheeled the 99 machine to fourth place right behind Hetznecker.  And don’t forget that Paul Shead was on his way to making all of them look silly until a mechanical woe stopped him in his tracks.  If Shead’s car holds together he likely will be the man to beat this time around.

If the fans want to see racing in a division where there is literally no favorite and anyone who shows up could win, then Saturday’s All Quality Products Mini Stock race will be a perfect fit.  DJ Nobles holds the points lead over Shirlene Hammond, but just barely, and depending on who may be racing it is a total toss up as to who could win.  This will only be the third feature race of 2011 for the Mini Stocks, and both previous races featured an almost totally different fields of cars.

Last Saturday saw the top two in the season points battle make early exits before Volusia Speedway’s Thunder Stocks could take the green for their feature race, and without Tom Hughes or Alan Peacock out there fighting for the win it was a golden opportunity for DJ Nobles to step up and score one for the home team.  Nobles was followed by Alan Lane and Donnie Birdwell who both have their machines running with the front pack and are poised to return to victory as well.  Hopefully Hughes and Peacock will be back on track for this weekend, but with or without them the competition has been cranked up a notch.

RJ Glaser may still have the points lead over the rest of the Sparkle and Shine Car Wash Challengers, but so far Glaser has not figured out how to put himself into the Destination Daytona Victory Lane.  Mark Commitale climbed into Sony Espy’s number 6 on Saturday night and got the win, but right behind him was the brand new version of “Rowdy D” in the 16, as Denica Hetznecker has returned to the track and the front of the pack.  Casey Feaster was also back this past Saturday, but failed to crack his way into the top four.

The grandstand gate will open at 5:30PM  and the final Saturday night of racing at Volusia Speedway Park will begin with the first heats at 7PM.  For more information on the coming switch to Friday night racing, or to check the complete and updated  schedule for the remainder of 2011, please visit www.TheVolusiaSpeedway.com.
