Another great night of racing is in the books at Ocala Speedway. The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks were running for $1000 and no points, no previous winners were running in the Gladiators, the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks were running for more points, and the Colortyme Open-Wheel Modifieds wrapped up their season.
The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks were up first and they put on a show worth $1000. Heat winner Steve Mooers barely made it on the track for the drop of the green, but would have to start at the rear. On lap 2, Jody Wells, attempted to pass Wally Schneider, and they both got loose, but continued on. A chain reaction followed with Danny Miller having nowhere to go, Bubba Christian being the meat in the sandwich, and Tommy Ausburn at the back. Kevin Durden and Mike Tovet had a great battle throughout the race with Durden taking the lead mid-way through the race. On lap 27, Tovet had a tire go down, ending his run at the front. A 3 lap dash would decide the winner and Durden held on. Grady Christian did all he could on the restart, but Durden was too strong. Steve Mooers battled Christian all the way to the line, temporarily making contact on the front stretch, and Mooers prevailed for 2nd. Grady Christian would finish 3rd, Billy Medders 4th, and Joe Belke in 5th.
With no winners from 2010 on track for the Gladiators, some one was going to victory lane a very happy camper. Howie Garvin went up the track with a problem on lap 9, but that was the only stoppage in this feature. After the restart, Sammy Dale and Robert Graham had a great battle for 2nd while Jerry Taylor and Kyle Morse battled for 5th. In the end, though, it was all Steve Cox, Jr. up front with a great win. Sammy Dale beat Robert Graham across the line for 2nd, Reid Christenson was 4th, and Jerry Taylor took 5th at the very end.
As always, the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks put on a show and the fans loved it. At the beginning, Kenny Asbell was found facing the wrong-way and that would force a total restart. They lined them up and tried it again, this time a yellow came out for debris, forcing another total restart. The 3rd time was the charm and the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks were off! Scott Mooers immediately moved to the lead and Jason Gamble tried to follow. After a couple laps, Gamble was right behind Mooers and they had an intense battle until lap 8 when Gamble had a right rear wheel fall off. On lap 10, Kenny Asbell and Mike Stalnaker made contact, with Stalnaker getting the worst of it as he had a left front go down and didn’t return to the clay. On the next lap, Jerrid Bennett blew up in turn 4. On the restart, Scott Brumfield, running in the top 5, got loose on the back stretch and spun right into Vaughn Woodall’s driver side door. Gordon Cade got caught up in the mess and Kenny Asbell did as well. By this time, the clock had expired and that set up a green-white-checkered. After Sean Babcock slowed, the yellow came out and it set up a 1 lap dash. Chris Shea did everything he could to pass Mooers but it wasn’t enough. Scott Mooers did what he needed to do to stay in championship contention with a win, Chris Shea was 2nd, Vaughn Woodall in 3rd, Chris Rowe 4th, and Brian Shea was 5th.
The Colortyme Open-Wheel Modifieds came in knowing 2 things: it was their last event in 2010 and that Kyle Bronson was chasing Jeff Mathews for the title. On the start though, Kyle Bronson got caught in a wreck and almost flipped, but there was some damage on the right side. On lap 2, Cory Hupp slowed and Tim Zackery had nowhere to go and they made contact. At the front it was Garrett Stewart, trying to become the 4th different winner of the season. Jeff Mathews and Kyle Bronson eventually worked their way around Stewart, but Stewart was able to hang with them. On lap 19, Tim Zackery’s engine let go and that set up a restart with 3 drivers on the lead lap. On lap 21, Mathews spun in turn 1 and it set up a 4 to go restart that had Bronson in 1st, Stewart 2nd, and Mathews 3rd. At the end, Kyle Bronson won, Jeff Mathews 2nd, Garrett Stewart 3rd, Jason Davis 4th, and Matt Fetterhoff was 5th. As Bronson went to victory lane, however, Davis spun Bronson, drawing a DQ for Davis. With that, Fetterhoff moved into 4th, and Josh Sanford would go home 5th. Jeff Mathews did win the championship with Kyle Bronson 2nd, Tim Zackery 3rd, Wayne Hammond 4th, and Garrett Stewrt 5th in points. Points standings results, however, are unofficial.
Ocala Speedway will return to action next week with the Top Gun Sprint Car Series headlining the night, the Mini Stocks in their final event, the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks run their final points paying event of 2010, the Gladiators run, and the famous Powder Puff race is also on. Gates open at 5PM with racing at 8. For more information, you may call the Speedway or visit www.ocalaspeedway.com.
