Auburndale Speedway kicks off a busy month of September with a five division racing program this Saturday night featuring the Open Wheel Modifieds, Sportsman cars, Street Stocks, V-8 Bombers and Scramblers.
The Open Wheel Modifieds are back for the second week in a row and the question is does anybody have anything for James Wright III right now? Wright has won back-to-back OWM races and has a grip on the season championship holding a 99 point edge over second place Bobby Blake. Wright will be looking for the hat trick this week but should have plenty of competition trying thwart his efforts.
Old pro Dave Duncan just seems to get better with age as he has scored seven Sportsman wins this year and has a reasonably comfortable 46 point advantage over nearest rival Mark Medeiros. Expect a good field of Sportsman cars to challenge Duncan this week with drivers like Richard Elkins, Jr. and Bart Weatherford looking to get into the win column.
Matt McCrary continues to increase his point lead in the Street Stock class but would really like to pick up that first feature win which has been eluding him all year. McCrary now holds a 58 point lead over Jeff Waterman with Dave Colpritt still in the hunt but some 82 markers out of first.
Kim Gullett regained the Scrambler point lead after her second win of the year last week. The lead is very slim though as she’s just four points on top of Brian Tyre. Meanwhile, Josh Borem continues to maintain a 50 point advantage over Buddy Phillips, Jr. as the two continue to fight for the 2010 V-8 Bomber point title.
Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 2PM, grandstands open at 5PM and racing begins at 7PM. Adult admission is just $12, seniors are $10, kids 5-12 are $5 and children 4 and under are free. A family four-pack (two adults-two kids age 5-12) is $25.
NOTES:
Saturday night, September 11th will be “First Responders Night” at Auburndale Speedway. All police, firefighters, EMT’s etc. will be admitted free just by showing their ID. A number of activities are planned including a vehicle extrication demonstration. Auburndale Speedway would like to thank Bolton’s Towing for donating the Mitsubishi Eclipse that will be used in the demonstration. “Lindsey’s Little Racers” will also be giving away another pair of bicycles to a lucky boy and a lucky girl. They will be the 99th and
100th bikes given away since the program was started during the 2005 racing season.
Late Models return to action on September 18th for 100 laps. It will be the final race for drivers to qualify for the extra purse money up for grabs in the Late Model season-ending finale on October 16th. Purse and contingency awards for the October event now top $22,000!!
The Legend Cars have the next two weeks off for regional events but will return to join the Late Models on September 18th. The Legend Car ranks continue to grow as four new car/driver combinations made their debut last week including Brady Marshall (former standout in the Mini Cups) and former Champ Kart shoe Chase Fitzgerald. The class also has a new point leader as “No Brake” Jake Perkins has slipped in front of Gerald White, Jr. Look for a big announcement regarding the Legend Cars and Bandoleros at Auburndale Speedway in the next few weeks.
Auburndale Owner/Promoter Rex Guy has called for a Florida track owners/promoters meeting on Monday, October 4th to iron out scheduling and rules problems that are affecting fields at area tracks. The meeting will be held at the Hooters Restaurant at Interstate 4 and Highway 98 in Lakeland. “In this economy we have right now, we as track owners and promoters need to be working together for the betterment of the sport rather than against each other,” says Guy. Guy hopes the meeting will make for a much better 2011 racing season for all tracks.
