Clean Sweep to End the ASALM South Division for Drew Brannon | Punta Gorda, FL (October 3, 2009) Drew Brannon and the SS Green Light team dominated "The Best Show in Town 100" at the Charlotte County Motorsports Park in Punta Gorda, FL winning the pole with a new track record, winning the race and the ASALM South Division Championship.
On the tail of a great season with the SS Green Light team, Drew only needed to take the green flag to secure the ASA Late Model South Division Championship. There would be some drama along the way as the motor expired in the No. 08 just as Friday’s practice session ended.
Showing the teamwork and dedication that brought the team to the brink of the South Division title, the SS Green Light team worked on just four hours rest to replace the powerplant in Drew's ASI Limited Chevy. Drew's father, Bob drove six hours round trip to Miami to get one of the motors from their family shop to put into the No. 08 following the failure, returning to the speedway at Midnight with the replacement engine.
With repairs made, Drew did his part posting the fastest time in Saturday’s practice before setting a new track record in qualifying with a lap of 14.94 seconds. The invert for the start was six, giving Drew the outside of the third row starting spot.
During the warm-up laps, Drew came on the radio and thanked Butch Miller and the SS Green Light team for a great season and showed his appreciation for the extra effort this weekend. Miller responded with a very simple answer, “Drew, give me one clean lap and then go have some fun!”
At the drop of the green Drew darted toward the front of the field, reaching the fourth spot when the first caution flew on lap seven. Drew moved to third on lap eleven passing Blake Koch. Travis Cope and Brian Blum looked strong early following Brannon towards the front. Drew passed Brandon Johnson on lap twenty-one and took the lead from Austin Kirkpatrick on lap 23 and never looked back for the remainder of the 100-lap race, his ninth feature win of 2009.
“Tonight was all about Butch and the guys on this team. The car was perfect, it cut on a dime,” said Brannon. “We ran the feature with the exact same set-up we unloaded with. It was a challenging weekend and everyone went above and beyond to get the car ready for the race.”
“I can’t say enough about the whole SS Green Light team, it’s been a great season,” said Miller. “We have really enjoyed racing this year with Drew and watching him mature. I have been so impressed with the support the entire team has received from the Brannon family. When we blew the motor on Friday, Bob was right there to step-up and help. I’m so excited to get to Memphis, I think we’ll have something for them again.”
“I want to thank Butch and everyone on the SS Green Light team who has helped get us to this Championship,” said Brannon. “I had set some goals before the season to win the ASALM South Division Championship and to win ten races. We have one race left at Memphis to try to get that tenth victory.”
Drew Brannon the SS Green Light team has one more challenge in front of them, on November 7th at Memphis Motorsports Park for the ASA Challenge Series “King’s Ransom 300.” Brannon’s sits second in the points for the series behind Michigan’s Brian Campbell.
