Halloween Spooktacular This Friday at Ocala | by BJ Cavin
Ocala Speedway will be a very scary place on Halloween night as the late models go topless for $3000 to the winner and a Halloween Spooktacular Special Event! In addition to the lidless late models, fans will see action from the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators. And the kids will be invited down to the frontstretch for a special "safe" trick-or-treat event with all of the racers and their race cars, plus there will be a kid's costume contest!
Racing the Late Model cars without tops is not a new idea, but it is new to Ocala Speedway and will afford the fans a chance to see the drivers wheeling their cars through the turns and down the frontstretch. By removing the roofs of these race cars the drivers are exposed in full view of the grandstands, and fans will be impressed with watching the effort and skill that goes into handing these powerful racing machines on the clay.
Thanks to a rainout last week, this will be the first chance for fans to see if Keith Briggs can get back to his winning ways in the Mini Stock division. Briggs has replaced the power plant in his car and will be looking to recover from the upset he suffered at the hands of Paul Combast a couple of weeks ago. If Briggs continues to falter it will open the door for Combast to cut into Briggs' points lead in the division and tighten the race to the championship.
The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks have provided some of the most exciting and competitive racing at Ocala Speedway in 2008, and that should continue this Friday as the point race winds down. James Sealey has used consistency as his road to the front of the points battle, while Harold Erickson and Terry Dunbar give chase behind him. Look for a full field of these pure stock machines to muscle their way to a spectacular finish on Friday night.
And the Gladiator division will again hit the clay with Guy Bacelo Jr leading the way in the points. Paul Hahn is just over 100 points back and looking to close the gap, followed by a hard charging Brian Chisholm in the third spot.
Kids always feature prominently at Ocala Speedway, and that is especially true at Halloween. The kids costume contest is a Ocala tradition, as is trick-or-treating during intermission. The racers will line their machines up on the Ocala Speedway frontstretch and the kids will be able to go car to car to get candy and surprises.
This will be a Special Event Night with the pit gate opening at 2PM Friday afternoon. The grandstand gate will open at 5PM and hot laps should begin by 7PM. Heat races begin at 8PM followed by the kids events and feature racing. For more information, contact Ocala speedway at 352-622-9400 or visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com!
