Pepsi Six Pack Racing Returns to Ocala | by BJ Cavin
Friday, October 24th, marks the return of the Pepsi Hobby Stock Six Pack Series to Ocala Speedway, which means fans will see a highly competitive 30 lap, $1000 to win contest. In addition to the Pepsi Hobby Stock event, fans will see the return of the Open wheel Modifieds, plus action from the Mini Stocks and the Gladiators, and the Ocala Jeep Club will be on parade to promote Jeeptoberfest 2008. Fans and racers can also contribute to a nationally recognized local charity as Operation Shoebox will be on hand to collect donations for American troops serving overseas.
This will be Pepsi Six Pack Race 5 in the six race series, and a heated points battle for the series championship is underway. Grady Christian, from Altoona, Florida, is the current points leader in the Pepsi Six Pack Series, but Kevin Durden trails him by only two points going into Friday's event. Ocala's David Kinsey is also in the hunt for the championship and is a mere 18 points out of first place, well within striking distance with two races remaining. This race could make or break any of these drivers' hopes to win the series before the final race is run next month, and other racers will be vying to unseat the top three.
The Mini Stocks will offer some extra drama after Keith Briggs' domination of that division was upset by a hard charging Paul Combast two weeks ago. Briggs' engine exploded the following night at Volusia Speedway Park, so the 19T team has been busy replacing that power plant, and the new engine will get its first test this Friday on the clay in beautiful downtown Zuber. Can Combast or another racer beat Briggs again? Fans will get the answer on Friday night.
Race fans will be entertained by the Ocala Jeep Club to kick off Jeeptoberfest weekend in addition to the racing action. The two day event will be held at Ocala Speedway's "Back 40" behind the main parking area, and will feature multiple off road courses, rock climbing, mud bogging, and other activities. Jeeptoberfest is open to the public and takes place 8 AM until 4 PM on Saturday, and 8 AM until 2:30PM on Sunday. Admission is $5 a car load to see the events and entries for competitors is separate. Contact the Ocala Jeep Club at www.OcalaJeepClub.com for more information.
