Official Statement From DeSoto Speedway | [The following statement was issued yesterday by DeSoto Speedway]
DeSoto Super Speedway would like to clarify the incident that happened on Friday October 05, 2007 at the race track. The ASA was contracted and present to race on Saturday, October 06, 2007.
Inclement weather was looming with several delays already due to rain so qualifying the race cars for the next days race was getting further behind. John Sarppraicone, the track owner, had attempted to speak with one of the ASA officials to suggest that they get going before the next batch of rain came and again wet down the track.
The ASA official did not feel that he, the track owner, had any business making this request and she had made an outlandish statement that Mr. Sarppraicone had attacked her. Anyone who knows Mr. Sarppraicone, knows that this is just absurd.
All of us here at the DeSoto Super Speedway are very disappointed in the actions taken by the ASA and the quick decision to breach their contract and disappoint the fans by leaving on Friday night. The Manatee County Sheriff was contacted by the ASA to report an "assault" on their ASA official. Reports were taken and no arrests were made.
We would like to make it perfectly clear that there was no assault or intention of the same on anyone at anytime. A simple request and a conflict of how the ASA official handled the situation was exaggerated into these ridiculous accusations.
After DeSoto Super Speedway spending an enormous amount of time, effort and money to prepare and promote this race for our fans and the drivers, we regret the final outcome and we look forward to open discussions with the ASA regarding this incident. It seems unfair that the actions of one should affect so many others unjustly.
As one of our top priorities here at the track, we pride ourselves on offering a safe and secure racing experience for not only our racers, but also for all of our fans.
We look forward to seeing you all at the races this weekend!
