ASA Late Models Update

By Matt Prieur-ASA Late Model Series

Lexington, Michigan (10/08/2007): In the wake of the extenuating circumstances that were beyond the control of the ASA Late Model Series Southern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts, the Seafest 100, scheduled for Saturday October 6, 2007 has been postponed and will not be rescheduled at the Desoto (FL) Super Speedway.

Due to the nature of this event and situation that called for this event to be postponed, all ASALMS Southern Division teams that were in attendance will receive Show-Up as well as Qualifying Points earned.

In addition, all ASALMS South teams that were on hand on Friday will also receive the minimum points earned that they would have garnered by starting the Seafest 100. In this case, a minimum of 90 points will be applied to each teams Drivers and Owners Points Standings!

In a statement released by the ASALMS it was stated that: “Due to the circumstances surrounding the race at the Desoto Super Speedway, this event has been postponed and will be rescheduled at another venue due to the Physical Assault on an ASALMS Official by the Desoto Super Speedway Owner. Charges have been filed in Manatee County.

The race has not been lost however as ASALMS Officials along with the South Georgia (GA) Motorsports Park, located North of the Florida/Georgia state line in Cecil, Georgia have come to terms to reschedule this event in the month of November on a date “To Be Determined”.

In what is now a second date at South Georgia and now the 12th race on the 2007 ASALMS Southern Division Schedule, this event will now also serve as the 2007 ASALMS Southern Division Season Championships and will go 125 laps.

Before the postponement, Lakeland, Florida freshman, Chris Fontaine won his Third ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier Award of the 2007 season as he steered his FLF Racecars Chevrolet Monte Carlo at a 14.865 around the facility which measures out to 106.079 MPH.

ASALMS Southern Division Overall and Rookie of the Year Points Leader, Jeff Choquette timed in second fastest with a 14.949 while David Wilson returned after missing some events and posted the third quickest time of the day with a 14.986. 17-year-old John Wes Townley was fourth at a 15.020 while Brandon Johnson rounded out the Top Five with a 15.024.

14-year-old Drew Brannon (15.054), who was hoping to make his ASALMS debut at Desoto, was sixth fastest and was followed by Beau Slocumb (15.060). Two 19-year-old’s were next as Jimmy Lang (15.078) and Travis Cope (15.132) were Eighth and Ninth as 16-year-old Brian Blum (15.155) completed the Top 10.

The next event on the ASALMS Southern Division Schedule will be the 10th Race on the 2007 Schedule as the famed 0.363 Mile Semi-Banked Paved Oval of the Hickory Motor Speedway on Friday and Saturday October 20, 2007 for the running of the Meet the Stars 125.

Friday October 19, 2007 is a Hickory Motor Speedway ran Practice Day as there will be limited ASALMS Officials on the grounds. The Meet the Stars 125 Entry Form is available and due at the ASALMS Home Offices in Lexington, Michigan by Monday October 15, 2007 to avoid the late fees.
