Pro Sprint Car Series Gets Off to Slow Start

by Bill Green

First, I want to thank Bobby Deihl and the CCMP crew for their help in bringing asphalt limited sprints back from the dead in southern Florida. We have a long way to go, but I am confident that we can build a great group of cars, as the racers and car owners become more confident that we will insure fairness and equality at every event.

I would be mistaken not to THANK the drivers that did participate in Saturday Night's event. Scott Adema, Mike Tharp, Dennis Misuraca and Mike Schroeder were there not because it was a new beginning, or a new guy running the show, they were there because they want to see asphalt limited sprint car racing succeed.

All four were very nice about the situation at hand and they spent 45 minutes to an hour talking about the subtle changes they think would help bring more cars back to the track.

The number of cars dictated some creative thinking on my part, so an 8-lap heat would set the feature line-up inversion and the feature would be 20-laps for a $400 winners share.

The heat race started with Scott Adema making a quick getaway, but his three fellow drivers would start dicing it up right away, leading to contact between Adema's #3 and Schroeder's #6. Breaking one front left bar and bending another. Mike Schroeder made a heroic effort to rebuild the front end of his sprinter after the heat race and came back to finish 3rd in the feature.

Now a lot of folks are likely to say forget it. The series will not work and its the end of the season, pretty much, so no-one is going to join in this late. They may very well be right. Hey, I was disappointed also, but it was the first try and as long as we show improvement each week, I will always stay very positive about the future.

BUT, I will admit that it will get real frustrating to get to week 4 or 5 of this seven race End-Of-Year Championship, and still be looking at less than 8 cars. Tweaking the rules may be necessary to get more participation, but I will not feel comfortable about doing that for at least another race weekend.

Taylor Andrews may have summed it up best when he said, "Think about it! Your asking guys to build a DIRT car to go run Asphalt, with a limited motor. If they want to run asphalt, they want to learn in an asphalt car. If these guys really want to run dirt, then go run dirt. You'd have a Hell of a show if you all went to East Bay and ran the limited shows there."

Ah! But for those pesky rules problems.

Sorry for the lack of cars and to hear some wanted your money back, but I don't think CCMP raised their prices just because we were to be there. So you would have paid the same to see the other classes anyway. Consider us a freebie.

NOW! If you came to see ONLY the Pro Sprint Car Series, I have a different question for you....Why? WHY did you have a higher than 4 car expectation? What car count were you thinking you'd see? Who's information were you basing this car count on? FACTS: It was the first night of a new organization and series. We have some 50 plus Limited sprints of one type or another in the state of Florida, so maybe you knew that, and hoped a full 20 car field would all take the chance that the new promoter would be true to his word and all would be well.

Racers are just like you and me. They are also waiting to see what happens. If it fails and no one ever comes to race in it, they and all the nay, say'ers, get to say "See, told you it wasn't going to last!" But, I'm out to prove them all wrong and prove that it can work. The little guys can enjoy a fun, inexpensive series, with good pay-outs and a fair playing field. So let's take the high road, remain positive about the out come and work hard to help make things happen in the best interest of everyone involved in limited sprint racer.

Here is the Box Score for Race-1 of the End-of-Year Championship at CCMP!
