John Barker's ASA Late Model Wrap Up | John Barker
LAKELAND, FLORIDA - Chris Fontaine of Lakeland, Florida finished ninth in the ASALMS Southern Division in the Florida 100 presented by FLF Race Cars on Saturday June 23, at New Smyrna (FL) Speedway in Samsula.
The brakes on his new FLF Race Cars Ford proved to hamper Fontaine’s finish on the quick one-half mile asphalt high banked paved oval.
“We were doing all right, then started having issues with the brakes overheating the front rotors,” said Fontaine. Apparently something in the brake line broke so then I was stuck with just the front rotor and I had to back off.”
Brandon Johnson emerged as the winner after a battle with Florida driver Jeff Choquette. Jason Boyd, who originally finished third was disqualified in post race engine inspection.
Johnson, who started on the outside of the front row, took the lead from pole-sitter, Travis Cope and the 22-year-old Sunshine State driver in his un-sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo led all 100 laps.
Choquette held off Boyd for second while 16-year-old Brian Blum finished a career high third after holding off current ASALMS Southern Division overall and Rookie of the Year points leader Sean Bass finished fourth.
Bass would be awarded fast time after Boyd’s disqualification and all other finishers would move up one finishing spot.
Northern Division invader, Jason Taghikhani, who made the haul from Hales Corners, Wisconsin made his trip worthwhile with an ASALMS career high fifth place finish over Wayne Morris.
The next event for the ASALMS Southern Division will be race number four on the 2007 schedule. The Crimson 125 is set for Saturday July 14, 2007 at the famed 0.625 mile semi-banked paved oval of the Birmingham (AL) International Raceway in Birmingham, Alabama.
