Sunoco Sunbelt Series heads to Columbia this Saturday, May 26 | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla. (May 23, 2007) Race number five for the Sunoco Sunbelt Super Late Model Series heads to Columbia Motorsports Park in Lake City this Saturday for 125 laps of pure racing action. Racing with the Sunbelt will be the Sportsman, Pure Stock, Hornets and the new V-8 Bombers.
Going into race five, Tim Russell has two wins under his belt at Citrus County Speedway and Bronson Motor Speedway. Justin Drawdy was the big winner at Orlando SpeedWorld as Jeff Choquette topped the New Smyrna race. Last year it was Jeff Choquette who topped the first Sunbelt race at Columbia as Mike Bresnahan took home the win at the last race. Who will be be this Saturday?? You have to be there to find out.
Tim Russell leads the points for the series by 42 over Brian Finney. Finney, who ran with the Florida Pro Series that called Columbia home a few years back, has had very good luck at Columbia and knows the track well. Can Finney claim his first win of the year?? Be there to see.
Chad Pierce stands third in points and has not seen much action at Columbia but has proven that he can definitely wheel a Super Late. This is Chad's first year racing the Sunoco Sunbelt full time and is loving it. "This has been my dream to race the series all year and I am having a ball," said Pierce.
Two of our Rookie stand fourth and fifth, Corey Freed and Blake Lehr. Freed, who has a few Championships behind him at Orlando SpeedWorld, gave up his Modified and went Super Late racing. Lehr, who also raced Modified, sold his and made Super Late Model racing full time in 2007. Neither have alot of experience at Columbia but hope for good finishes.
Completing the top ten in points for 2007 are Jeff Scofield, the 2006 Champion, Perry Brown, Gary Grubbs, and the two Travis's - Travis Cope and Travis Towell.
There will be open practice on Friday night, May 25, from 5 to 9 p.m.
On Saturday, May 26, pit gate will open at 2 p.m. with practice for the Sunoco Sunbelt Super Late Models ALONE from 3 to 4 p.m. Division practice will follow with the Sunbelt mixed in.
