News - Auto City Speedway | Hearty race fans braved the cold temperatures and enjoyed some great racing at Auto City on Saturday, May 12th. All 6 regular division were in action along with double features on the quarter mile.
Defending track champ Shaun Whitney set fast time for the Auto City Super Stocks with a 15.41. Heat race wins went to former Legends car drivers, rookie Barry Hartwell and John Turnbull, Jr., while Norm Wilcox took the dash. The 30-lap feature went flag-to-flag, as Turnbull took the lead early. He started to pull away while close battles were going on all through the field. Robbie Johnson began to reel him in, but ran out of time as Turnbull kept his Ford Fusion out in front for the win. John, Jr. fired up the crowd when he climbed the fence up to the flagstand after his win. Johnson was second followed by Jeff Owens, Waynes Howe and Samuel Coulter, Jr.
Two-time track champion Chuck Silva had quick time for the Modifieds with a 16.02. Ken O'Connor won the dash and Donny Matteson, Jr. captured the heat race. Matteson jumped ahead to start the 30-lap feature and led until lap 17. Then O'Connor ran him down and took over the point, leading the rest of the way for the win. Matteson held on for second followed by Johnny Belott, Silva and Tony Brabbs.
There was no qualifying for the Factory Stocks or the Led Sleds, as they used their times from the previous two weeks to line up features and semis. In the first 25-lap feature Ed Newman, Jr. held the lead for the first 3 laps. Then Tony Basalone took over, looking for his first feature win in over 5 years. But with 5 laps to go an altercation involving Basalone, Robby Johnston and Adam Rowe took all 3 cars out of action. Nick Lechota took over the point and held on for his first ever Factory Stock feature win. Kyle Hayden was second followed by Jay Woolworth, Jim MIller, Jr. and Rob Sullivan.
In round 2, Jay Woolworth captured a hotly-contested semi-feature. In the feature Larry Plamondon made a slick move on the first lap, sliding under 2 cars in turn 2 from his third starting spot. Plamondon led all the way in his '67 Camaro to take the win. Kyle Hayden was a bridesmaid twice finishing second in both features. Rounding out the top 5 were Adam Rowe, Robby Johnston and Jim MIller, Jr.
In the first Led Sled feature "Big D" Dave Marsh took the lead until a fire under his hood ended his race on lap 6. Chad Lamson took over the lead and never looked back, holding on for the victory. Charlie Thom took second followed by Jimmy Stratton, Scott Beach and Jason Congdon.
Congdon came back strong in round 2, taking the semifeature. Herman Gross started on the pole and jumped ahead in the 20-lap feature. The "Herminator" led the first 3 laps until Nick Johnston got by him. Then former track champ Jimmy Stratton took over the lead on lap 16 and held on for the victory. Johnston nipped Chad Lason for second while K. C. Snover and Gross rounded out the top 5.
Blake Childers once again set fast time for the 4-cylinder Hornet division with a 18.31. Mark Wilcox won the dash and Andrew Abbott took the heat race. Paige Amy took the early lead and held it until lap 6. Then Wilcox and Childers got by and waged their own battle for the lead. They into each other on lap 12, spinning out and sending both of them to the rear. That gave the lead to Baron Leblanc and he kept his Pontiac Grand Am in front for his first ever feature win. Paige Amy was second followed by Abbott, Childers and Hanna Christenson.
Defending Thunder Truck champ Brian Cogswell is back with a vengence as he started off setting quick time with a 15.72. Cogswell then won the dash, with the heat race going to Steve Stultz. Stultz jumped out in front in the 20-lap feature and stayed there until lap 11. Then it was Cogswell who flexed his muscles and pull away for the win. Stultz hedl on for second followed by Scott Amy, Rod Marsh and Dale Keenan.
This Saturday, May 19th the Outlaw Super Late Models make their 2007 debut at the Action Track of Michigan, with 5 other division also on the schedule. Qualifying begins at 5:00 with racing at 7:00.
