Southern Sportsman, Florida Mini Stock Challenge ready to tackle America's Short Track | by Rick Warren
Friday Night! Under the Lights! Florida Short Track Racing at its’ best. The racers of the Southern Sportsman Series and the Florida Mini Stock Challenge take on the challenge of racing at Ocala Speedway. The racers are really pumped up about this race, looking forward to sailing down Ocala’s long back straight, and battling for position thru turn 4. The difficulties of dialing in a chassis for Ocala Speedway may give an advantage to the local racers that run with these series on a regular basis.
In the Southern Sportsman, Steve Gainey has been on fire the last two races, with wins at Orlando and Columbia Motorsports Park.
Gainey currently leads the points race by a scant 11 points over Arthur Conquest, winner of the first race of the season at Bronson Motor Speedway. Richard Elkins Jr. is way over due for a win, and currently sits third in the points race. As you look through the standings in the points race, you can count many drivers that are also very capable of winning this race.
If you haven’t seen the Southern Sportsman Series in action, this would be a great race to attend. Come watch these drivers, and you will see why this is quickly becoming one of the most popular touring series in Florida. These guys give 110% every race, and the action is always hot and heavy.
Also on hand will be the Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series, chomping at the bit to hit Ocala Speedway. They may be 4 cylinder engines, but these guys are unbelievably fast, and always put on a great show. With 3 races in the books this season, there has been 3 different winners. Richard Kelly grabbed the win at Bronson, with Robbie Storer coming out on top at Orlando Speedworld. 17 year old Chris Zimmerman demonstrated a lot of talent as he picked up the win at Columbia Motorsports Park.
This series also has a number of drivers with a great chance of winning this race. Cody Blair, another of the young guns in the series, was denied his chance to race for the win at CMP when he suffered mechanical problems while leading the race. Dustin Perez, Jesse Henley, James Ellis, Robbie Yoakam, Ronnie Larson, Jonathan Camp, and Chris Hooker all come to mind when looking at drivers with a better than even chance of winning of this race.
This is going to be a great night of racing, short track style. Make plans to visit Ocala Speedway, America’s Short Track, this Friday night, May 11. Hope to see you there!
