Fontaine Set for ASA race at Cordele | By John Barker
Chris Fontaine of Lakeland, FL will compete again in the second race of the 2007 season in the ASALMS Southern Division Saturday night at the Watermelon Capital (GA) Speedway, located south of Macon in Cordele, Georgia for the running of the Watermelon Bowl 125 and ASA racing is slated for an 9:15 p.m. start.
Fontaine is fourth in ASA Southern Division points and third in rookie points driving his FLF Race Cars Chevrolet.
“I guess we’re going to keep things the same with the team in ASA Southern Division racing,” We’re used to the tires for this series.”
The Watermelon Capital Speedway opens at 10 a.m. Saturday and ASA cars practice from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be a drivers meeting at 6:35 p.m. and ASA qualifying is scheduled for a 7:05 start.
Watermelon Capital Speedway is a three-eighths mile medium banked high speed D shaped asphalt track.
“We went to Cordele, Ga. two weeks ago to test and we were pretty happy with the results,” Fontaine said. From what we’ve been told we were running pretty well and posted some good times.”
“It’s (track) got some banking – I’d say less than medium. You tend to overdrive it and there’s no wall.”
“I think it will be a good race with long green runs,” Fontaine concluded.
The entry list for the Watermelon Bowl 125 is over 40 drivers.
The ASALMS Southern Division made one appearance in 2006 at the Cordele, Georgia speed plant as the great state of Georgia was the stage for the ASALMS Southern Divisions 13th race of the 2006 season. In the Watermelon 100, the top five finishers were all teenagers while a freak accident involving the pace car hampered the start of the 100 lap event.
