Bronson Motor Speedway next Stop David Wilson | Sunday, February 25 was the beginning of the 2007 season for the Wilson Racing Team and for David piloting the number 83 at the DeSoto Super Speedway Icebreaker 125, it was supposed to go smoothly. Unfortunately the team got off to a rocky start, but some good lessons were learned that will hold the driver and the team in good stead the rest of the year.
David, backed by Crew Chief Dick Anderson, qualified third in the field of 23 super late models. After the inversion of the field per the All American Challenge Series rules the 83 would start in the fourth spot behind veteran racers Steve Dorer, Jeff Choquette and Billy Bigley Jr.
Things began to go against Wilson early on in the race when on lap 30 after an incident with Jeff Scofield officials sent David to the rear. Later track officials indicated that may not have been correct but as they say, "that's racin'".
"Every single car I tried to pass coming back either blocked me or I would be a quarter way up their car and I would get pinched up to the wall", David said after the race.
Another racing incident occurred on lap 52 when David was passing the 8x, who came down on the 83 spinning both cars. The 8x was penalized and the race resumed with the #83 Wilson Excavating machine running in 23th position.
David started using the outside groove at the high-banked DeSoto Super Speedway and moved in to the top ten by lap 85. The handling of the car had gone away, as David explained "the car was so messed up, I never had to handle a super that bad before. It wouldn't turn left at all."
After another incident trying to work around a much slower car, Wilson was sent to the rear again and the team decided to call it a day and prepare for the next race. "I learned this race what patience was all about."
Next stop for the Wilson team is Bronson Motor Speedway and the ASA Late Model South Division, Saturday March 17. Bronson is a very demanding 1/3 mile banked speedway 15 miles west of Gainesville, Fl. This is the season opener for the southern series, with over 40 teams expected to try and make the starting grid.
David and the team will be ready and look forward to showing the fans a solid effort in the ASA.
