Justin Larson Looking For Revenge on Lakeland in Goodyear Opener | Team Release
Every racecar driver hopes to do well in his or her season-opening event. No matter the series, the first race sets the tone for the season and is always the most important in chasing a championship and race victories throughout the year.
That is reason enough for Justin Larson to want to go out and do well in his first Goodyear Challenge Series start of the 2007 season, which comes at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, FL, on March 10th. He wants to win the title and take as many checkered flags as he can during the new season with sponsor Skinner Nurseries.
But there’s one thing that makes Larson itch even more for success in Lakeland - revenge. The track has never been too kind to Larson before, which is on the young driver’s mind as he opens the Goodyear Challenge season March 10th.
“It’s really exciting to get the Goodyear Challenge Series season kicked off at Lakeland,” said Larson. “I kind of feel like the place owes me one because I haven’t finished a Limited Late Model race there yet.
“The first race we had there with the series, we had a power steering problem which built up a bunch of pressure that blew off a power steering line and the car caught fire. It was a pretty big fire, actually. Then the next time was the time I spun out and wrecked. So I can definitely say that places owes me one.”
If there was ever a time where Larson was going to turn his luck at Lakeland around, it would be in this year’s season-opener. Larson is fresh off a strong showing in the Limited Late Model portion of Florida Speedweeks at New Smyrna Speedway, and he looks to parlay that success into an impressive first race of the Goodyear Challenge season.
“We had a good run at Speedweeks, especially the nights that our sponsor, Skinner Nurseries, was there. We had a good race the night Russell Skinner was there, too. They’ll be at Lakeland again for this race, so hopefully we can do well for them this time out, too. We’re going to have a big cookout for all the sponsors and friends, and then it’s time for me to focus on that racecar.”
Even though Larson has not had the most impressive luck at Lakeland, he has turned heads at the .75-mile track and knows what it will take to get the job done.
“We’ve qualified well at Lakeland before, we just haven’t had much luck in the race. It’s fun there, though. They’re momentum cars, so if you can keep the momentum up through the corners, then you’ll be pretty quick.”
Larson kicks off his Goodyear Challenge Series season on March 10th at USA International Speedway (FL) as he chases the 2007 championship with Skinner Nurseries on the sides of his #88 machine.
