Justin Larson Turns Heads With Speedweeks Performances | SAFETY HARBOR, FL (February 19, 2007) – Before the start of the season, Justin Larson hoped that 2007 would be a breakout year in his young racing career. After a week at New Smyrna Speedway (FL), for the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing, it looks like the teenager might be well on his way to accomplishing his goal.
Larson ran solidly within the top five in all of his Limited Late Model events during Speedweeks, but mechanical gremlins kept him from always finishing there, or collecting a victory during the nine nights of racing in New Smyrna. Still, Larson was able to finish Speedweeks third in Limited Late Model points.
“I feel like I did the best I could all week,” said Larson. “The crew worked real hard, the car was good all week and so was the motor. Mechanical issues you can’t really help. Luck just didn’t fall our way some nights, but overall I’m glad we came here. The nights we ran and actually finished, we ran good and finished good. We came out of here with the car in one piece, and it was a good learning experience.”
Larson also knows that his team was consistently quick enough that if they had been able to finish every race where they could have, they would have been contending even more for the Speedweeks championship.
“Our goal was to run up front all week, and we did that. I think I would’ve had a chance for the championship if I didn’t have the couple of nights with bad luck, but that’s racing sometimes. You live by it, and you go on to try to do better the next day or the next race. That’s kind of what’s nice about Speedweeks… if something goes wrong one night, you’re right back out there the next night trying to do better.”
Speedweeks was a tune-up for Larson’s regular season in the Goodyear Challenge Series, and the lessons learned at New Smyrna should lay a good groundwork for the rest of the season.
“Some of the issues we had here, we may have had them in the Goodyear Challenge Series,” said Larson. “So it was good to come out here and get things shaken down so we hopefully won’t have to deal with them during the season. We’ll go back and get the cars ready for the season’s first race at Lakeland.”
Larson kicks off his Goodyear Challenge Series season on March 10th at USA International Speedway (FL). Have an opinion on
