Walter J. "Smokey" Posey Passes | Walter J. “Smokey” Posey passed away on January 31, 2007.
He was born March 22, 1924 in Washington D.C.
Like many of his generation, he endured a very hard childhood, made even more difficult by a broken family. Yet, Walter always maintained a very positive attitude.
He enlisted in the Navy after Pearl Harbor, trained briefly at the Banana River Naval Air Station, and saw combat as an aerial gunner during WWII.
After the war, he went to work for Douglas Aircraft Corporation in California. He was one of the many space pioneers who came to Brevard in the mid 50’s while working on DAC’s Thor (Delta) missile program. He enjoyed working - mostly at Launch Pad 17, with a wonderful group of coworkers until his retirement in 1985.
He was a former Commander of VFW Post 4534 and also enjoyed boating, boxing, and auto racing. He taught boating safety courses for the Power Squadron, was a former President of the Space Port Quarter Midget Racing Association, Pit Steward at Eau Gallie Speedway and crew chief of many family owned race cars.
Walter is survived by his wife of 60 years - Bea, sons Bill (Katie), Bob (Becky) and Wayne (Liza) all of Rockledge, sister Ruth Fox of Annandale, VA, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was a good, kind and generous man who would give anyone in need the shirt off of his back. – but most of all he was the greatest husband, Dad, Granddad and Great-granddad.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rockledge United Methodist Church, 1935 S. Fiske Blvd, Rockledge.
