BENEFIT SET FOR LONG-TIME FLORIDA RACER WAYNE ASHTON | KARNAC Staff Report Plans have been announced for a benefit Bar-B-Que on July 29th to help long-time Florida race driver Wayne Ashton of Ft. Pierce as he continues to recover from throat cancer.
Ashton has raced throughout Florida for several years in everything from Late Models to Dwarf Cars and most recently with the Florida Cracker Classics.
Ashton did actually race the FCC opener at Orlando Speedworld, but has not been able to compete of late due to his health issues. Despite insurance, Ashton's bills are astronomical and it is hoped that the racing community will support the benefit to help Wayne and his family through his period of recovery. The hurricanes of 2004 did not help either as his property in Ft. Pierce took quite a beating and they put quite a crimp in his business as well.
Along with plenty of great food, there will be music, pony rides and a silent auction too. The benefit will be held at the Indrio School House in Fort Pierce. To get there, take I-95 to the Indrio Road exit, then go east on Indrio Road to the corner of Indrio and Emerson Avenue. Again the benefit is slated for Saturday, July 29th with entertainment beginning at 1:00PM.
"I've had a chance to race and work with Wayne Ashton over the years," says Florida Cracker Classics Race Director David Nunes. "He's a true fighter and his attitude is amazing considering what he's been through. All he wants to do is get back to a normal life and be able to race again. We know the benefit is on a Saturday, but anything anybody can do even if they can't be there will be greatly appreciated," he says.
Donations for the silent auction and cash donations are being accepted from the racing community. You may call Lisa at (772) 201-5119, Wendy at (772) 370-5050, David Nunes at (407) 466-9908 or see Orlando Speedworld Announcer Dave Westerman at the track either Friday or Saturday. Have an opinion on
