Goodyear Challenge Late Models head to Columbia Motorsports Park May 6th | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla. (May 2, 2006) This Saturday, May 6, the Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series moves to Columbia Motorsports Park for race no. 4 of the 2006 season. Race one was won by Joe Winchell, race no. 2 was won by Rookie Travis Cope, Brad May topped race number three, and to see who wins race number four, be at Columbia Motorsports Park this Saturday.
Joe Winchell leads the points going in to race four but only by three over A.J. Curreli. Chuck Burkhalter stands third with 2005 Goodyear Series Late Model Champion Rich Clouser in fourth. Rich has built himself up from last in points at Orlando SpeedWorld on March 17 to his present fourth place standing with solid runs at Bronson and New Smyrna Speedway.
Rookie Dustin Deschamps stands fifth and has proven that he can not only drive to a Championship in the Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series but also in the Goodyear Challenge Series. Troy Hall, formerly of the SARA Late Model Series, has also proven that he can run with the "big boys" of the Goodyear Series. Hall stands sixth in points. Greg Kaouk stands seventh followed by Rookie Travis Cope in eighth. Rounding out the top ten are Amanda Gogel and Justin Larson.
"I am really proud of this series and our drivers and crews. They had a rough beginning this year but with each race it has gotten better and better," said Series Director Scott Jackman. "So far in the first three races this year, we have not had less than 25 cars. I don't expect Columbia to be any different."
Along with the Goodyear Challenge Late Model 100 will be the Open Wheel Modifieds, Pure Stocks and Hornets. Qualifying for the Goodyear Challenge Late Model 100 will be at 6:30 with racing at 7:30.
There will be an open practice on Friday night, May 5, at Columbia Motorsports Park from 5 to 10 pm. Cost is $20.00 per car plus 3, $5.00 each additional person. Drivers who need to leave their haulers and would like to stay in them are welcome.
