John Potts Memorial set for Friday night at Orlando SpeedWorld | Friday night will be a race fans dream at Orlando Speedworld with a multitude of action featuring nine different classes of race cars including the 50 lap John Potts Memorial for the Sportsman Division. The Sportsman race is named in the memory of local driver John Potts of nearby Christmas who lost his life during a Sportsman heat race at the track on March 20th, 1992.
John Stewart Potts was born in Bryn Mawr, PA in 1965 and had raced at Speedworld for several years, mostly in the Bomber class where he was very successful winning many feature races.
Potts moved up to the Sportsman class in late 1991 and was becoming one of the top competitors in that class too at the time of his death at the young age of 27.
Potts is the only driver to lose his life in a racing crash at Speedworld in the 32 years the track has been operation. Orlando's Paul Colgan won the feature race for the Sportsman class that night in 1992: "I never wanted to win a race more in my life than I did that night," said Colgan. "Yet, victory lane meant nothing to me after the loss of my friend."
The Sportsman class has been one of the most competitive all year at the track with four faces in victory lane in four races. Richard Hight, Billy Cuddy, Bryan Silas and Andy Nichols all have wins and all are expected in the field this week along with many others.
The Super Late Models will also be in action along with the Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Super Stocks, Strictly Stocks, and Junior Stocks.
The RE/MAX Legends Cars and Bandeleros will also be racing this Friday night as well as the next two Fridays for Speedworld and INEX national points since the track will not hold regular Saturday racing activity the rest of April.
The Legends have two Saturday PBG Florida Series events scheduled - this Saturday at Bronson Motor Speedway and April 29 at Citrus County Speedway. FAST Media Group is renting Speedworld for their show on April 22nd. Regular Speedworld Saturday racing will resume on May 6th.
