Magic In the Air at Desoto Super Speedway in 2006 | by Rick Anges
That right there's MAGIC in the air at "the South's Fastest Short Track" this year. After a very successful 2005 where over $96,000 was awarded at the year end banquet 2006 is gearing up to be even bigger. Track owner John Sarppraicone was quoted in early January as saying , "Remember your first race as a kid, I all ways have that in my mind it's the MAGIC of it all.Think about it,That's the secret word I have been looking for a long time. When I was at the RPM work shop in Reno this year Tom Curly from Thunder Road said it all MAGIC bang and it hit me. I would like to pass this on to all that go to the races and their children, I think it's great think back in time, I know you will have the same feeling.
This is the grass root's of racing and life itself.I don't know myself but the race track or any race track to me has Magic in the air when you walk in that front gate.Gas fumes, pop corn, tires ,hamburger's, french fries and best of all the crowd. Believe it or not it's what it's all about.
We want to start a 4 Cly class for 12 to 17 year old kids, we need a name for it . Put a racing seat, 4 point cage , seat belts, fuel cell and get the kids racing . It will teach them some good driving habits car control and best of all we know were they will be on a Saturday night.See you at the race's." Along with the 4Cly class for the kids the big news for early in the year will be the running of the first Super Late Model race, long known as the Icebreaker this year it will have a new name. It will be now known as "The Leroy Porter Icebreaker", Porter was one of the top Late Model drivers in Florida when a fiery crash as DeSoto nearly cost him his life. Severe burns ended Porter's racing career but not his love for the sport.
Also on tap for '06 the new USAC Ford Focus series will roll into the speedway. Crash-A-Rama makes it's return along with the regular classes it will truly be MAGIC at DeSoto Super Speedway in 2006! Have an opinion on
