CLASSIC Car Series Hands out 2005 Awards | by Dave Westerman
Awards for the 2005 racing season were handed out to the Classic Car Series drivers Saturday afternoon at a barbecue hosted by three time Series champion Jim Rahman at his home in Clermont. The weather was incredibly balmy for a late January afternoon with most of the Series drivers in attendance.
Rahman took his third Series title in 2005 to go along with championships in 1998 and 2002. Rahman posted four wins, two seconds and two thirds as well as 10 top ten finishes on his way to the number one spot in the point standings topping Orlando racing veteran John Smith by 38 points.
Smith, in his second year racing Classics, equaled Rahman's four wins while also scoring one second and one third place finish and nine top tens.
Steady Simeon Spagnuolo also had nine top ten finishes and took third in points with Norm Agostinho fourth in Ray Pellitier's machine. During 2005, Agostinho took his first Series win along with four second place finishes.
Cleveland "Beaver" Daughtrey was fifth in the points chase and also earned the 2005 "Rookie of the Year" award. Despite just one full year under his belt in the Classics, Daughtrey is retiring from racing but will still field a car in 2006 for former Series champion Rodney Eary.
Other awards were handed out to Ben Booth (Sportsmanship), Ron Gustafson (Most Improved) and Randall Grief (Hard Luck). Series Director David "Fudd" Nunes also received a special plaque from the drivers for his hard work keeping the Classic Car Series moving in a positive direction.
Eleven races are already scheduled for 2006 at Orlando Speedworld as part of the track's Saturday night "spec series" program while negotiations are under way to add 4-5 races at other tracks in Florida.
