Orlando native Ruff among champions at Orlando SpeedWorld Dragway | by Jill Caliendo
ORLANDO, Fla. -- In the final results from the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event being held this weekend at Orlando Speed World Dragway, Orlando native Mike Ruff was among four Florida racers that were crowned champions at this weekends NHRA Florida Nationals. Other Florida racers who shared the winner's circle with Ruff were Tena Scott of North Port, Steve Cohen of Trilby and Robert Sellers of Daytona Beach.
In all there were six Lucas Oil categories, as well as the TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series, competing at this weekend's event.
In Comp Eliminator, Brad Zaskowski of Grand Rapids, Mich., defeated Gary Merrick of Girard, Ohio in the final. Today's win marks Zaskowski's first Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series victory.
Returning to the Orlando winner's circle for the third year in a row was Pittsgrove, N.J., racer Lee Zane. This is the first win of the year for Zane, the defending National Champion in the Stock Eliminator category. In 2003 and 2004 Zane was the victor at this event in Stock Eliminator. In the final, Zane defeated Duncannon, Pa., racer Tim Worner.
In Stock Eliminator, Peter Biondo took his '69 Camaro to the winner's circle when eliminated St. Petersburg, Fla., runner Larry Ericksmoen in the class final. Today's win was the 36th Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series victory for Biondo, who throughout his career has raced in five different Lucas Oil categories.
Taking home the win in Super Comp was Tena Scott. In the final, Scott eliminated North Salem, Ind., racer Greg Kamplain. In Super Gas, class veteran Steve Cohen, eliminated Craig Porter of, Silver Springs, Md., to earn the win.
In Super Street, it was a Sunshine State showdown between Orlando's Mike Ruff and Palmetto's Joseph Skala. In the final, Ruff put his skills to work to take out Skala and claim the win.
In the TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series, the final round featured another pair of Florida racers, Robert Sellers of Daytona Beach and Lantana's Matt Buck. In the final round battle, the instant win went to Sellers after Buck red-lighted.
