Mark Martin wins California Busch Race

FONTANA, Calif. -- As the sunset at California Speedway, Mark Martin drove his No. 9 Pennzoil Platinum Ford Taurus to the front of the NASCAR Busch Series field to win a rain-delayed, under the lights Stater Bros. 300 at California Speedway on Saturday, February 26.

“Jack Roush deserves all the credit for this victory,” Martin said. “He’s made my career. Driving in this event is a throw back to the good old times. He put the right tools in my hands and we got the job done. It has been an honor to drive the No. 9 Pennzoil Platinum Ford tonight. We didn’t expect to win but I’m glad we did.”

This makes Martin’s third win at the 2-mile, D-shaped oval, with his other two coming in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series and IROC in 1998. Team owner Jack Roush has seen much success at California Speedway as well, having all three of Martin’s win under his shop, as well as both NASCAR Busch Series wins in 2004.

“California Speedway has been very good to me,” said team owner, Jack Roush. “This time with Mark in Victory Lane is one of my proudest moments.”

The Stater Bros. 300 finished with 29 cars on the lead lap, a race record, after it was briefly halted due to rain at Lap 123 of the 150-lap, 300-mile event. The race went back to green with 21 laps to go. Martin held off the second place effort of Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 21 Reese’s Chevrolet, and took the checkered with a margin of 0.602 of a second.

Be here for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Auto Club 500 on Sunday. Lower level seats are available at $65 each and upper level seats are $105.

Tickets for the NEXTEL Cup Auto Club 500 are available online or by calling 1-800-944-RACE (7223).
