USA International Fits Gale Like a Glove

By Mark Chisum

Lakeland, Florida – Cale Gale came to USA International
Speedway Saturday for Mark III Conversions Speedfest 2005 on a mission-show the Florida boys how to get around their own track. After 50 laps, his mission was complete. Speedfest pitted the Florida-based Fasttruck Series against the Alabama-based O’Reilly Southern All Star SuperTruck Series.

Gale’s lap of 24.053 seconds led the way in qualifying, but he drew a four for inversion, but that shouldn’t create much of a problem. But Gale’s driving attire, or lack thereof, could have. Driving gloves were required, and as the field headed off of pit road, an official noticed Gale wasn’t wearing the required item. Gale had to return to pit road to don a pair of gloves and rejoin the field at the rear. But that really wasn’t a problem either.

Jamie Skinner, son of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Mike
Skinner grabbed the early lead. Skinner, winner of Thursday night’s
25-lap race pulled away to a comfortable lead. Gale began to pick off a truck each lap and within 20 laps he was chasing Skinner for the lead.

Gale was closing quickly on Skinner, but got help from a caution on lap 25. When the race went back green, Gale made quick work of Skinner, moving to the inside to take the lead. Gale pulled away to take an easy win over Skinner, Sean Bass, Mike Davidson, and Curt Britt.

In Thursday’s 25-lap race Skinner led all 25 laps to take the win. Jeff Wainwright led the way in qualifying but before the race could get a clean start had spun twice and received damage to the rear of his truck. Restarting in the rear, Wainwright was making his way forward when Kelly Caudill spun in front of him and Wainwright collided hard with Caudill, ending Wainwright’s weekend.

With his main competition out of the way, Skinner cruise to victory over Sean Bass, Wayne Morris, Larry Jordan, and Bill Manfull.

The O’Reilly Southern All Star SuperTruck Series opens its season
with the annual Earlybird 100 at Birmingham International Raceway,
February 25-27. For more information, contact the series at (256)
