Super Late Models Run 2nd Leg of Triple Crown at Citrus Saturday | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 11/03/04) Friday night practice will set the tone for the 2nd Leg of the Triple Crown race set for Saturday night at Citrus County Speedway. The ultimate goal is to claim the Governor’s Cup at New Smyrna Speedway’s brutal half mile on November 20th. This annual race got started by Promoter Frank Dery at Golden Gate Speedway, two parts of Florida racing history that are no longer with us. The 200 lap race in Tampa drew drivers from all over the U.S., many of whom went on to Busch and NASCAR fame.
The Governor’s Cup has become Florida’s most coveted award and it has drawn the best of the best in the three race challenge that opened for the 2004 Cup at Bronson Motor Speedway last week. Jeff Scofield recently purchased a race car from Dave Pletcher and took it to Bronson last Saturday night to put the his mark on the first Leg of the three race series. Runner up Wayne Anderson has a couple of cups on his mantel and would like to add another but had to settle for runner up last week. Jay Middleton, Dwayne Dempsey, Chris Fontaine, Patrick Williams, Fain Skinner, Scotty Crockett, Rich Pratt, David Pollen Jr. and Mike Franklin took the top eleven spots. They are expected to return and face many of the locals like John Chance, local rookie of the year Daniel Webster, 2004 Champion Herb Neumann Jr., the winningest Late Model driver ever at Citrus, Gary Grubbs and many more to take on the fastest 3/8ths mile in Florida in three groove racing excitement.
The stakes are high and the competition will be the best that Florida has to offer. Qualifying time trials will set the field for the 125 lap championship race at 5:30 pm Saturday night.
Added to the program will be the Mini Stock 50 lap special after running their final points race last week and seeing Rookie of the Year, Jim Curry come out with his second win of the season and the championship crown for 2004 in a division that saw 53 drivers in the chase throughout the year.
Hobby Stocks will also be running a post season race. Bobby Taylor came up Hobby Stock Champion by 13 points over Tommy Smith in one of the closest championship runs in the 49 year history of Citrus County Speedway. This was the most populated division ever at Citrus with a total of 86 different drivers earning points for the year. The division averaged 25 to 30 cars every race night.
Rounding out the night of action will be the Thunder Stocks that totaled 61 drivers in the race for the crown that is now worn by Jerry Hoover for 2004. The new beginner, economy class 4 Cylinder Bombers will top off the night and looks like it may grow into a full fledged racing division in 2005.
The final race of the season will feature the TBARA Winged Sprints, a 50 lap Figure 8 and Hobby Stock Special, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Thunder Stocks, 4 Cylinder Bombers and a Powder Puff race for the ladies to wrap up the 2004 regular season.
The Winter Spectacular will be run on December 3rd and 4th featuring a 150 lap Late Model special to close out the 49th year of operation at this venue. Plans are being made to celebrate their 50th year as we close out 2004.
